@Mike Warker, I love that George & Bob were good buds.
Bob hadn't done much performing & wasn't sure he'd sing until almost the last minute.
Who knows how long it would have taken him without the encouragement of George.
For fans of Dylan & Harrison (mostly Dylan)
check out "Bob Dylan & George Harrison in Studio" for a fun 56 minutes of them riffing.
They rented 12 hours of studio time. I think the purpose was to find songs for Bob's upcoming album 'Self-Portrait'.
Charlie Daniels & a few other well known names also played. It's audio only, unfortunately :(
It's easily found on Utube but I'll post link if needed.
      God bless ✨🕯️✨

Harri, it's hard to emphasize how huge Leon Russell was at the time. Everybody wanted to with with him as a writer, musician and producer. Clapton declared Leon as the original Rock God years ago when I saw him in concert. He says he was stuck and couldn't figure out how to start a song so who did he call? Leon. First words out of his mouth? "I bet you didn't think I knew how to rock and roll." Thus BLUES POWER was born and a big hit for Clapton.
Leon was Elton John's idol. And Bruce Hornsby
Legend does not then begin to describe him.

  • @neilsgross
    @neilsgross Před 2 lety +18

The concert was the first real benefit concert and was put together by George Harrison, after a conversation with his great friend Ravi Shankar and preceded Band Aid by 16 years becoming the template for future charity gigs. It was in response to terrible flooding in the river delta in Bangladesh which caused a huge loss of life. The delay in payment of the funds raised was due to the US IRS which resulted in George Harrison just writing a cheque cover the tax so the funds would be released in full, in addition the various recording companies were difficult about the performing rights for their artists. George Harrison has been a huge hero to the country and people of Bangladesh ever since. Paul McCartney was asked and declined to perform due to the breakup, and John Lennon initially agreed to perform without Yoko Ono as George requested, but then had a disagreement with Yoko over the arrangement so left two days before the concert.

I was so fortunate to have seen Leon four times: once, in 1976 on the Wedding Album Tour (sparsely attended since he was married to a Black woman) -- all I can say is "they missed it." Next, he appeared at a very small bar in Macon, GA, and was accompanied by his son Teddy Jack; we had front-row seats and were about 5 feet away from him. Best $10.00 I ever spent. My husband and I saw him in to celebrate our 20th anniversary, and it was wild. Then, just a year before he passed, we took our daughter to Variety Playhouse in Atlanta to see him, and he told a story about having met Elvis: "I said, 'Elvis, how come you made all them godawful movies?'" To get the full flavor of Leon's performance abilities, the Homewood Sessions available on youtube will be "diamonds" in your ears. Thank you for keeping great music alive!

Do yourself a favor and find the induction ceremony for Leon Russell by Sir Elton John, into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I cried my eyes out, after Elton John told the story of where, and what condition he found the great Leon Russell living in. Everyone in the room, mainly other famous artists and Band members we would all recognize, and who worked with Leon throughout his life, were sobbing at what they heard and saw. It was heartbreaking. Elton John was his inductor and was weeping uncontrollably. Leon died shortly after this wonderful, but sad ceremony.

When Denny Cordell from A&M records needed to put together a touring band to support Joe Cocker's first American tour, who did he call? Leon. The result was "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," and the series of concerts spawned a movie, a double live album, and elevated Leon to Rock Superstar. When George Harrison wanted to put on a benefit concert for the people of Bangladesh, who did he call? Leon. This move also resulted in a movie, and, you guessed it, a successful double live album. In the seventies, if you wanted to get shit done in the music business, call Leon.

You mentioned the bass and drums on Russell's track. The bassist was Klaus Voorman, formerly with the band Manfred Mann and a prolific sessions bassist. His credits include playing on Carly Simon's “You're So Vain.” He also won a Grammy for designing the cover of the Beatles album Revolver. If it wasn't Ringo, the drummer was Jim Keltner, one of the great sessions drummers of the 1960s and 70s with far too many credits to mention.

It's funny because more recently they re-released that album with some out takes from the original sessions tacked on at the end as they sometimes do, and they really stand out as sounding dated- but the original songs that were on the album stands the test of time--it's a marvel.

Excellent pick and great performance by Leon here! The significance of this two-day concert can not be overstated in rock music history. It was the first concert of its kind. Specifically, the benefit concert was organized mainly by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar along with others. The number and names of rock legends who performed at this concert was astounding for its time and is well worth a deeper dive. I am old enough to have seen the concert film in theaters when it was first (and finally) released. I still have and cherish the multi-album box set. Once again, a terrific submission.

I commented last week when you reacted to George Harrison that I had gone to this concert; and that I had last seen Leon Russell in a small supper club in NYC within a year of his death. Leon was so amazing and sang what seemed to be every song he ever wrote and/or sung! Leon Russell and the Shelter People got my heart the first moment I saw them. Mad Dogs and Englishman, the album by Joe Cocker with Leon Russell 1970 (I was in high school) is still one of my favorite albums.
This is worth watching. Leon Russell and the Shelter People (who were session musicians).

I also saw him in englewood fl, got back stage as he was leaving and thanked him for all the memories. A year later we lost him. Still have his music. Thanks Leon, RIP

Harri, John Lennon was invited to perform at the concert but John insisted that Yoko appear on stage with him, George declined.

The song is written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller. They are the two Jewish hipsters that are responsible for writing so many great songs.

Paul didn't want to since Beatles just broke up and John demanded that Yoko would perform and George said uh no. Ravi Shankar who opened the show asked George to help raise money for Bangladesh. I think a famine as a
result of war between Pakistan and Bangladesh over Bangladesh independence?

Great superstar concert put together by Harrison to raise money to alleviate the famine (long story). I hope I'm wrong in remembering that the organizers sent large cargoes of corn, which the Bangladeshi couldn't eat.
