The Remarkable Rise of Brest

- čas přidán 6. 04. 2024
- Despite having the fourth lowest budget in Ligue 1, and having been one of the favourites to be relegated this season, in a campaign reminiscent of Leicester City in the 2015-16 Premier League season, Stade Brestois 29 are currently second in France's top flight, trailing only state-owned PSG, and well on course to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
So in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at Brest's remarkable and almost totally unexpected rise, why they are the biggest underdogs in Europe this season, and how they have managed it.

One truly must admire Brest's ability to bounce back. So well-rounded.
Yes. While it may not be a big club, it's the shape of their line-up that makes the fans come to their matches. I'm sure Brest is about to grow a lot in the future
wink wink nudge nudge 😀
Haha
I love it when Nice and Brest play each other
I prefer watching ligue 1 when Clermont Foot meet Brest
Neither team ever wants Toulouse

Hope champions league money helps them with theie finances.

Super thankful for ANY Ligue 1 coverage that goes beyond PSG. Great work.
It's you!
I am a supporter of sb29 who lives there right next to the stadium, it makes us so strange to have so many people talking about us today, normally we are in the shadows, we play last place in league 1 and try to stay in league so yes, seeing videos just in another language makes us weird, it's probably the only year where we will be at the top of the table but we're enjoying our moment!
A good shout can be Bologna in Serie A. It's 4th in maybe the hardest league to enter in the Top 7
Alfie can do a double header with Atalanta and Bologna (yes, he's covered Atalanta before, but the continued good form is worthy of extra coverage!) which would be a good one indeed.
I mean Bologna is historically one of the biggest clubs in Italian football. They got more league titles than Napoli. They’ve been just a sleeping giant before the arrival of Thiago Motta
@@nathan225 yeah but is sleeping for a long time
@@nathan225they're not part of the 7 sisters unfortunately so they don't really get recognition

Would love to see a video on Stuttgart, they are one of the biggest clubs in Germany, but have been struggling in the past decade and are now suddenly third in the Bundesliga (after finishing 16th last season)
Forgot to mention that they had just beat Borussia Dortmund more recently, while Bayern Munich lost to newly-promoted side Heidenheim. If Bayern Munich's struggles continue until the end of the season, Stuttgart could have been the better sides to finish 2nd in the Bundesliga!
I really love their matches with Nice, especially if Nice is at home.
Nice Brest matches are the best fr

Brest have really grown this season. They are now quite massive and soon enough, they will be playing among the big boys in Europe
You, and Maqwell, manage to make videos that even someone like me, who doesnt watch football outside the WC/Euros, finds incredibly interesting to watch.
Especially when you do videos where you analyse the rise and/or fall of (national-)teams and put them in perspective from a (socio-)political/economical point of view makes it a great watch even for people outside the fandom of the sport itself.
I was wondering if there were others like me in these comments! 😭 I only keep up with international football really, yet I keep finding myself coming back to this channel, Maqwell’s and RabonaTv. It’s just really great content that often broadens the scope beyond football but into history, politics and social / economic factors as well. Amazing creators

Alfie please make a video on FC Heidenheim . They have risen from 4th tier of German Football in 2007 to 10 th in Bundesliga and have recently defeated Bayern Munich(2nd) and tied with Stuttgart (3rd). They have also done this under 1 manager, Frank Schmidt.
The same thing cannot be done for Luton Town. Despite making a shock return to the top flight football, having previously being in 5th tier of English Football exactly 10 years ago, and despite achieving such good results like destroying Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0, they were still in relegation zone!
@ezraezra2928 but Luton have been a top flight club in the past, won the League Cup and even reached the FA Cup Final many moons ago. They're hardly a village pub team that rose up the pyramid from nowhere are they!
Hello! I have a video suggestion for you. In Austria there is a club called "GAK" which has had a very interesting history in the past 20 years. In 2004 they were Austrian Champions for the first time in their history but had to fight for survival in the coming years because of financial problems. They were subsequently relegated into the 3rd tier of Austrian football where they survived for another 5 years, even winning the 3rd tier twice but not getting the license for the 2nd tier. They were then dissolved and rebuilt from 0 by the fans. Starting in the lowest tier of Austrian football (8th tier) and winning promotion EVERY year until they got back to the 2nd tier, even managing the previously hard fought 3rd tier on their first try. They then spent 4 seasons in 2nd tier just to miss promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga by 1 point on the last day of the season because they only tied their match while their direct opponents won. This year they are so far 14 points ahead of the competition and are basically on the way to the biggest comeback in Austrian footballing history. (As you can imagine by this I have been a lifelong fan of the club :D). I think the downfall and rise of the club could make for a really great video and sincerely would be happy if you could make such a video. Thank you!
Liverpool fans might have been familiar with this club. They were the opponents during the historic Champions League triumph in the qualification round of 2004-05. The Austrians won 1-0 at Anfield, though, they were eliminated after losing 0-2 at home.
@@ezraezra2928 Yes, we still like to brag about it. As far as I know it's still the only time Liverpool lost to a club from a german speaking country in Anfield
@@danielstangl2973 That is why Anfield is the most historic football stadiums in Europe. Everyone will struggle or even lose against Liverpool at this fortress!
Im really sorry…
In the light of Georgia qualifying for their first major tournament in history, could you make a video about Georgian football? Or even a video about Georgian Football in the USSR considering the fact that 60s-80s were the golden era of football in Georgia
Thank you for the magnificent content Alfie
Brest are the most beautiful and well-rounded team to watch this season.
Thank you for covering this, i love Brest, i could only think of Brest everyday
Thanks for the video!
Love these kind of stories. My favorite club, VfB Stuttgart, currently are tied in points with Bayern and the entire fan scene just feels like we are living in some sort of simulation. Brest is of course even more impressive and absolutely deserve the attention!
Crazy that when Leverkusen officially win the title, they'll most likely be doing so against both Bayern *and* Stuttgart
VfB🤍❤️🐊
I'm a very simple man. I see brest, I click.
The remarkable rise of brest
It's a shame that the format of the champion's league change because I would love to see a table of Brest, Sttugart, Bologna and Girona in a group
It's amazing how quickly Roy got Brest bouncing
🤣
The Champions League 24/25 is not only marked the beginning of new era, as we saw 36 teams in a league stage instead of group stage with 32 teams. We witnessed the arrival of newcomers, particularly Brest, Girona, and Bologna, as well as the return of 1982 winners Aston Villa and Stuttgart, whose last appearances in the Champions League came in 2010.
Will 5th place in the EPL be enough for The Vile to get into the Champions League next season?
Because it looks like Spurs have 4th sewn up now :)
@@franohmsford7548 I think City/Arsenal have to win the UCL so that England gets the 5th spot, thanks of course to Saudicastle and Man Utd being awful
@@MrRafting The problem with City and Arsenal is that they have a tough UCL fixtures, with Arsenal facing out-of-the-form Bayern Munich. As you may know, Bundesliga are currently 2nd, but their point gap between them and Premier League for this season's coefficient (not the regular one, which is based on the last 5 seasons of performance) is close. In addition, West Ham United had to play against Bayer Leverkusen, who were a big favourites to win the Europa League due to the invincibility records in both domestic and this competition. Bayer Leverkusen were unstoppable, but sometimes they didn't play so well like against Qarabag on the Round of 16, when they were 0-2 down in both legs, with Leverkusen scoring the two injury time winning goals during the 2nd leg at home, which means there is a chance West Ham United might upset them. In order for Premier League to have 5 clubs on 24/25 UCL, Arsenal and West Ham United must beat their oppositions, while Atletico Madrid must do the same thing against Borussia Dortmund in the other QF. The 1st place for Premier League is very unlikely for this season if Fiorentina get better results in the Conference League, which means Serie A and their 5 UCL spots will be safe enough, despite the fact there are no Serie A clubs remaining in this Champions League, and Milan and Roma were play against each other in Europa League QF.
@@MrRafting A bit harsh on Newcastle {or Saudicastle if you prefer} given they were in such an obvious Group of Death and were given no chance of getting through to the second round from the moment the draw was made.
Yes Manure stunk the tournament out, I'll agree on that.
It's always the same song :
1) Small club work well and unexpectedly earn a place in UCL.
2) The club gets raided in the transfer window by rich english club (or eventually german, spanish or italian clubs)
3) The club gets crushed in UCL because the team isn't the same anymore
4) Brits says "farmer league LOL" and complain about PSG getting money from Qatar because they can't do the same to them.
I'm very sure I've watched all your videos and I can say no matter how long they might be, I've never been bored watching them.

Video idea: an in-depth video on Eric Cantona’s turbulent relationship with French football despite his status as a bonafide legend on English soil
I am from Tunisia and I need to see a video about my country's football situation. We are in the worst time ahead due to massive state corruption inside Tunisian football. The fact that we, an African powerhouse, managed to even lose to Namibia and Australia revealed the extent of how bad our football situation is. Moreover our football situation is undone by the pay-to-play system, which is why we have been unable to progress ahead.
Lossin to Australia isn't bad
Remember they are very tough even Denmark and Argentina struggled to beat them. I'd say lossin to Namibia is embrassing, the manner how u lost against them was embarrassing
@@Jbkeditz Well, losing to Australia has a reason to be embarrassed. Overall, Australia isn't a football nation, they have their own football code (rugby look-a-like), then followed by cricket, rugby and maybe, basketball. Football isn't even among Australia's most popular sport (despite it being the most played sport in the country) may provide an explanation to understand the embarrassment.
@@luishernandezblonde it's kinda embarrassing but again. Australia plays in a strong association. Good players in Europe. Look at America, football isn't their strongest sport but reach the Round of 16 giving the Netherlands a difficult game. I mean Australia reached the Round of 16 in the 2006 world cup. World Cup regulars, so Tunisia losing to them wasn't embarrassing. They even won the Asian cup in 2015. So it's not embarrassing lossin to Australia
Didn't the Carthage Eagles defeat France though? I thought that was huge.
@@soraishida1318 it was their second team, but yes. It doesn't change the fact that they couldn't beat South Africa and Namibia
i ve loved brest since i was a kid great to see the perk up to a higher place
One of the Brest underdog stories
Woudl love to see a video on the best defensive teams ever in football history
Coming back to this video after Brest officially clinched European qualification. Still surreal man
6:33 a small precision is needed here, before the 90's a victory in the french league gave you 2 points, not 3. Hence why the point gap is so low for these periods.
A big cup on the cards for brest, possibly the double.
West Ham man Areola would be perfect goal keeper for Brest😂
We all love Brest(s)!
14:02 you say the supercomputer didn’t even give them a 0.01% chance of coming 1st or 2nd, but the note at the bottom right says only probability of 0.1% or higher are listed.
It could be that the supercomputer gave them that chance but it’s just not listed.
A point on language: Roy wasn't a 'consultant' for Bein Sports, that's a poor translation from the French which I assume you picked up from his haphazardly written wikipedia page. 'Consultant' should be translated into British English as Pundit or Co-commentator (in France it's normal for the same people to do both, which is rarer in England).
Not the only brest I enjoy rising
Alfie, I am still hoping you would make a video about Thai football situation as well. It seems like ever since they got the new Japanese manager, they have an absurdly high optimism because of their good Asian Cup results and an earlier draw away to Korea (1-1), they started to thinking like "we are going to the World Cup". Yet the problem of Thai football lies entirely on the grassroot, and their new optimism appeared to be just a facade to cover it. The Thai League, one of the richest football leagues in Asia, have seen overspending of a massive amount of money to buy foreign superstars (as some called it, the Mexican way) by many Thai clubs (which are also pretty rich and wealthy by standard), which, in turn, greatly impacted and stifled Thai domestic talents and created a situation where Thailand has been an underachiever for many decades.
If people think that Chinese football is that bad, then they haven't seen what's going on with Thailand yet.
I am also interested to see a video about Thailand too. Truly the weirdest underachiever of all time, massive love for football and well-structured league yet unable to rival the level it should have been.
28:37 L Barassiere...brassiere!...that was so invitingly teed up for a particularly bad innuendo, what you up yo fella 🤣

The dangers of multi-club ownership, from promotion to Ligue 1 to on the verge of the 3rd tier of French Football since their takeover, and yet it isn’t the first or most drastic collapse in the history of football in the city.
Beautiful town as well but nobody wore the merch of the local football club when I was there.
Day 12: 7 greatest seasons before retirement of all time
It’s rather common for French overachieving clubs to plummet quite deeply in the next season, I genuinely don’t think that it’s going to be different this time around.
Love the brest puns hahahaha!
There are only 2 positive surprises that I would compare to Brest this season : Leverkusen being unbeaten so far and certainly capable to continue like that until the end of the season, and Heidenheim which is maintaining quite comfortably for their first season in Bundesliga after a remarkable rise.
When Alfie uploaded this video i knew the comment box will be full of breast jokes but fans of this club is blessed because a man loves two things and this club got both.
After this video I hear Brest wish to thank you for your support. "Alfie you are the football brah we need, but not the bra we deserve."
Pierre Lees Melou and that Locko guy have been unreal
This is a 20 minute brest video hes been wanting to make for years
Seeing Sydney Sweeney in a video about Brest made my morning 😂😂😂
Yea, it was unexpected as she is a Legend.😮
A video on Stuttgart maybe? They are third in Bundesliga, now equal on points with Bayern, with mostly German squad of players that I don't recognise, run by Sebastian Hoeneß, Uli's nephew
Brest might lose their Brassier? That’ll cause issues in their support.
Only a X section of the support.
Great vid more like these plz!
All time title 👌🏾😂 great video again, keep up the good work
They have a player called Brassiere and you held strong, well done Alfie.
The sagging Brest joke was glorious. Nice one Alfs
Some precisions about the stadium. It is grade 2 now so it could host Europa League games but not Champions League. The city has to make accomodations of a few things to be able to host Champions League games. But the DOF said that they believe it could be done for next year and they are mostly positive about it.
The same problem happened for Union Berlin. They had to play all of their UCL games at the Olympiastadion, which is the home to their city rivals, Hertha BSC.
And right after this video Brest had a game, where they scored 4 and concided 3, pretty much the opposite of how you described the way they play 😅
It nice seeing success stories like this in modern football
I think Brazzier fills a great role for Brest’s needs!
We can always count on Alfie to keep us abrest of the situation
When the French Ligue 1 has become like the corrupted Premier League, where Paris Saint Germain which is one of my favourites ever, have made the league boring over the past five years due to them spending recklessly,Stade Brestois 29 have defined the odds to be powerfully be in the second place in the division and I knew them ever since I was a child, good friends!!!They were relegated several times before being promoted recently and I hope this one of the smallest respective teams in their history develop well and in future, recruit even well and slowly start winning trophies in future, good friends!!!LONG LIVE,STADE BRESTOIS 29!!!🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️🏋♂️

Plus, when Netflix does a docu series, you can say you covered it first...
Brest is engorged with talent!

Great video 🔥 and the comments are class 🤣
Can Alfie make a video about Paraguay's ongoing downfall? From once a team that frightened even some of the world's mightiest with our discipline football to now a team that can't even beat Venezuela and struggle against Bolivia, Nicaragua and even some small CONCACAF nations, our situation is so horribly bad now.
Their left back is called Brassier. There's no point in making jokes when this is actual reality.
And now we get to witness the historic derby between
Nice and Brest
The fact that Brest have a left-back called Brassier just proves that we're living in a simulation
It would be great for them to stabilise their position among France's top teams. The most likely scenario however is a lot less exciting: it entails Brest following the same path as Auxerre and Montpellier, 2 other French teams that qualified for the CL unexpectedly then expectedly got smashed and saw their league form unravel too. No resources to commit to such a competition. In fact Auxerre ended up relegated a year after qualifying for CL and have since only been back to the top flight for one single season.
They have to be called Presst because of their clever pressing. They exactly know when to attack high or deep and at the same time they are always aggressive and robust.
Great video!
I just got done watching a few videos featuring Brest on a different website but yeah sure i think I'm good to go again
I am so happy Alfie is revealing Brest to the world

Still waiting for a video about Iran's football crisis and how a country with 80 million people and insane football passion failed to produce a far more superior football team, how the Iranian dictatorship stifled their progression, the tragedy of our football league, and our upcoming demise of this golden generation squad when many of our key players like Azmoun, Taremi and Jahanbakhsh are increasingly older and we have no plan to find replacements for these players. If anything we are truly the tragic underachievers given countries with smaller population like South Korea and Australia have made more fames in the World Cup than us.
Gotta love Breast.
Fun fact. They once had a fringe Chech national team Mario Licka, effectively fielding line-up featuring Brest Licka. How cool is that? 😂
Alberth Elis is recovering from a head injury. He finally got some of his form back, but he’s had a lot of injuries as soon as he came to Europe
Alfie I have to know how long you spent thinking of ‘Brest’ jokes when writing the script for this video.
Honestly I kinda think they basically write themselves 😅😂
its an incredible rise for brest, they play great football and it would be remarkable to see them in the champions league
Brest enjoyed nine top-flight seasons between 1981 - when they won the Ligue 2 title, their only significant piece of silverware - and 1991 before financial difficulties hit. The club, which had secured a best-ever eighth-placed L1 finish in 1986/87, was declared bankrupt, and needed to restart the long climb back out of the doldrums. They were back in Ligue 2 by 2004 - helped by an emerging young talent named Franck Ribéry - and Ligue 1 in 2010.
the club has spent most of its time in Ligue 2 following relegation in 2013. However, they returned to the top flight as second-tier runners-up in 2018/19, and - following a 14th-placed finish in their first season back in Ligue 1 - appear set to establish themselves as one of France's top 20 clubs.

I like how the team jersey is very low cut V neck, very appropriate
Still waiting for a video about Kazakhstan's role as the 21st century's first sportswashing state by leaving AFC for UEFA, and how the Kazakh dictatorship regime inspired other dictatorships like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Russia to do the sportswashing with many evil intentions, and how UEFA's incapability to deal with the matter (by contrast, EU even banned Kazakhstan from joining due to the Zhanaozen massacre in 2011) contributed for what to come, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
