  • Just three seasons ago, Lille OSC finished 17th in the Ligue 1 table, just one point and one place above the relegation zone, and a whopping 55 points behind Paris Saint-Germain.
    This season, they pipped PSG to the Ligue 1 title to be crowned as French champions for the fourth time.
    In this short documentary, HITC Sevens takes an in-depth look at how they did it, Lille's footballing past, and the club's precarious future.

    Burak Yılmaz is an unique striker and he had tremendous seasons at Turkey, he showed his class almost every season he played here. Too bad that he is discovered by Lille at the age of 35 but he demonstrated that he could lead a team to become champions in such a league. Turkish players pretty much written the fate of this season for Lille and I doubt if they can maintain this championship. Well deserved Lille!

    What makes Leicester so amazing is how they have continued to hold form, competing for European spots each year. But the margin for error is so thin for lower budget clubs. A couple of wrong signings, and they tumble back down the standings because it is so difficult to continually find good players for the right price.

    I just put a bet on Turkey to win the Euros and Yilmaz to be top scorer at odds of 2000 - 1. Have been watching him at Lille and with Turkeys current form I can't believe the odds were so high, particularly when you factor in that Greece and Denmark have both won this competition

      Yeah but in 2012 there was still no real powerhouse in Ligue 1, Lyon was struggling financilly as they were building there new stadium and Paris was slowly building up but were nowhere near the team they became in the next couple of years. Montpellier was just the last team of a few very open and crazy years

      I agree, I think Montpellier is closer to a fairy tail such as Leicester more than Lille 2011, Lille 2021 and Monaco of 2017. In terms of quality that Montpellier team is weaker than any of those squads. Giroud being the only player who went on to achieve something significant from the 2011 Montpellier. The city of Montpellier has one of the best Rugby teams in Europe, football comes 2nd in Montpellier which made it even more of a shock even for the locals who didn’t believe in the title until late that season.

    I wonder which CB pair Fernando Santos will field in the Euros. Ruben Dias has been arguably the best CB in the world this season, José Fonte has been absolutely amazing at Lille & Pepe has been the cornerstone of Portugal's defence for nearly a decade now, he also had a brilliant UCL campaign with Porto. Seems like a pretty sweet dilemma for the coach.

      Well he's right and wrong. Yeah Losc stadium is in a different town, Villeneuve, D'ascq.
      But the satellite towns of Lille like Roubaix, Tourcoing, Villeneuve D'ascq etc. are part of "Lille Metropole" and are more like suburbs or neighborhood since the satellite towns are "glued" to Lille, no countryside between the towns. Sort of how Wembley, Tottenham, West Ham etc. are in London

    This just proves what I always say, people give to much importance to money in football, but the truth is, money doens't win championships or games, everything is possible. Being expensive doens't mean you are better, have 11 expensive stars, doens't mean you have a better team.

      This achievement is an outlier. Normal service will resume next season when the rich clubs are done scavenging and ripping the team apart. P$G will again wrap up the league by March.

    Another thing about Lille is that this win is big for CONCACAF. A young, promising American, a young, promising Canadian and a young, promising Mexican is part of the team. The Mexican however didn't play any games, and isn't eligible for a medal, but it still counts, eh?

    Great to see a new team win Ligue 1. However some of the teams PSG have fielded this year have been hilariously poor compared to their champions league-best 11.

      The weight of having to pay so much money on forwards salaries is showing. They have some really weak rotation options in midfield and defense (This guy called Baker looked like an amateur against city in the semifinals).

      @@ciudadano1995 I saw them play a league game earlier in the season and neymar and mbappe we’re out and genuinely didn’t know half of the PSG players and the ones I did know were poor. They ended up losing to Nantes who were bottom of the league if I remember correctly

      @@AdamCanavan12 Sorry, Mbappe played against Nantes when they lost 2-1. Having a team in that game of Mbappe, Di Maria, Draxler, Verratti, Marquinhos, Diallo, Perriera, Navas isnt really a team of nobodies.

    Really interesting. Ligue 1 is great league. You should do a video on the rise and fall of Bastia, 1978 UEFA cup finalists, who are now back in the second league having been relegated to the 4th because of financial difficulties. I am hoping to visit next season.

    congrats Lille for winning the title. It was an amazing run. As a Mexican fan following Mexican players abroad. Eugenio Pizzuto was signed this season. (I also see him in the championship photos in this video lol) While we hoped that he could debut during this season I definitely understand why he didnt. Couldnt afford to drop any points just to test out a young player like pizzuto. My questions to Lille fans is: Have you heard of Pizzuto before? How do you think he will fit in the team or think he will debut next season?

    Great video! Please do one on Sporting Clube de Portugal winning the league this season too please, we hired a coach that didn't have FIFA lvl 4 coaching and didn't invest nowhere near as much as our rivals (Benfica invested 100M€ and they got no trohpies), we were the underdogs and won the league after 19 years! Also Sporting won the 23rd title, not the 19th.

      Ehh, Sporting are still 1 of the big three in Portugal
      Lille has won Ligue Un 4 times, Sporting have won the Primeira Liga title 19 times.

    Could you make a video on the Basque country national team which toured Europe, South America, and North America as well coming 2nd the first ever season of Mexican league during the mid to late 1930s. They toured the three separate continents whilst escaping the Spanish Civil War and were raising money for the Basque country.

      This team was reformed and exists today with guys who are from that area, but not able to make the Spanish or French teams. The team's ELO puts them from exhibitions between Colombia and Switzerland or a lower end top 16 team.

    Tim Weah's father in addition to obviously being an African Football Legend is also currently the president of a country, Liberia, but he represents the US instead of Liberia. He is young so I think his father was still the president when he was deciding. That is crazy

    Champions in 2011, Runners-up in 2005 & 2019, Coupe de France winners in 2011, Coupe de la Ligue runners-up in 2016 and Trophée des Champions winner 2011 ..oh an UEFA Intertoto Cuo winenr in 2004. Hardly comparable to Leceister winning the EPL. Likle has been of of France's top 4 teams for the past 20 years.

      Yes, but PSG is far far above Lille. Its the gap between Manchestee United's wages and Sheffield United's. It's made really incredible the same as Leicester because of the incredible digference between PSG and the rest of the teams.
