People say that but it doesn't make sense. It is like doing a technical stroke in swimming like butterfly stroke or breast stroke. Freestyle is the fastest stroke but if you are swimming breast stroke you don't get the urge to break into a crawl. You are doing the stroke you are doing.
Actually the hardest parts of racewalking at the world class level are avoiding injury and avoiding disqualification.

I've tried a walking race before. One of them would literally slow briefly to give me tips as he lapped me, since he was so far ahead of the actual competitive walkers. Its not really exhausting like people on here think it is. At our pace we can't move fast enough to need to pant, at their pace they've had to train all day every day so they're obviously in far better shape than one would need to jog at that pace. I did end up with the strangest combination of sore muscles, however. And it is incredibly difficult as far as technique goes, even as a pole vaulter I found it difficult to manage to successfully execute the tips given. For beginners it can be reasonably difficult to not break the rules which demand things like one foot be on the floor at all times, and I forget a number but possibly to do with not bending knees and the like. If one is trying to walk at a fast but non-race pace it isn't too difficult, but the moment you start to race it gets tricky. But since they've likely spent tens of thousands of hours or more exclusively race-walking its second nature to them. Like with most events (pole vault included) you've done the same activity so many times that it can sometimes be harder trying to avoid thinking about what you're doing, like breathing its easy until you start to think about what you're doing.

Top level Racewalking Officials train for many hours to become adept at seeing the flaws that break the two rules governing this sport. These people must pass a rigorous testing proceedure to make it to these high levels in the sport.
As an athlete in racewalking, I have been Disqualified once in a race, and I deserved it. On the flip side, I also have won a Gold Medal in the 20km Racewalking World Championship in 1976, at Rio de Janiero, CISM Games.

alot of people in this comment section are saying that an average person can run faster than these guys can walk... these guys walked at a 3.58 per km pace (around 6.23 per mile) for 20 kms! (1st place), elite runners (male) can complete a 20k under 60 mins (below 3.00 min/km pace) while an average man can complete it in around 2 hours (6.00 min/km pace), so before you say that a 4 min/km pace is easy to an average person consider that you are probably not an average man if 4 min/km is easy for you.

Andrei Gabriel True, there is a flight phase. But racewalking is judged by the human eye, and we only see 24 frames per second. The officials must pass many levels of training and years of work to be accredited for judging this sport. It is tough to become this good at being able to judge these athletes. :)

imapieface "As judged by the human eye" is in the rulebook, due to the flight phase. We can have a very small flight phase during the progression of steps taken in forward progress and not be DQ'd. The consensus of the independent judges can disqualify an athlete even after the race is over, because the cards that are turned in during a race might not yet all be credited to each athlete. Gold Medals have been lost after the race is over, because races in this sport are NOT Official until the Head Judge reports the official results to the scorer.
