The Italian 4x100m relay quartet of Olympic 100m champion Marcell Jacobs, Lorenzo Patta, Eseosa Desalu and Filippo Tortu raced to victory in the final at Tokyo 2020. The Italians featuring 100m champion Marcell Jacobs won their country's first medal in the event at the Olympics since London 1948. Lead-off runner Patta handed the baton to Jacobs, who produced a storming run down the back end, with Tortu on the anchor leg crossed the line in a new Italian record of 37.50 seconds. Great Britain, pipped at the line by 0.01s, claimed the silver medal, with Canada bagging bronze, clocking 37.70.

Watching that Italian guy run the last leg was like watching an eagle fly. Really stunning victory and well deserved
That's fairly close to my impression of his run and I've been wondering why that is. I think it is a combination of him extending his arms behind himself slightly more than the other runners, plus the fact that he's white and his arms are more noticeable in contrast to the red track color. It really does give an impression of him grabbing air and throwing it behind him as he takes off in reckless abandon.

This is probably my all-time favorite 4x100 final. Absolutely electrifying. Tortu turned into Secretariat. He was running like a tremendous machine. And that might be the best finish-line lean I've ever seen.

Jacobs' 2nd leg was quite stellar too. Second leg is often expected to run 140 meters at top speed due to the flexibility of passing anywhere within two hand-off zones. This is the leg I always ran.

Italy's relay team disqualified
Tortu was already quite famous in Italy way before the Tokyo Olympics and we expected him to be in the 100m final and maybe have a shot at the medals, because he broke the 10s barrier and the national record at a very young age. No one in Italy knew who Marcell Jacobs was before this final or even after this final until we saw him winning. That probably helped him, because all the pressure was on Tortu. So it might be a surprise for the rest of the world but it's not a surprise for Italians that Tortu could run like that.
The faces say it all. Look at how relaxed Tortu is over the final 30m vs. Mitchell-Blake (9:43-9:53). Tightness vs. relaxation. Relaxation wins every time.
Yes the Italian was very relaxed as you said I can't wait to see them this summer at the World Championships in Eugene the USA will definitely be in the hunt for the GOLD.

I remember watching a video of Tortu racing here at CZcams many years ago. He runs with an extremely clean form with no wastage of movement. Commenters here were like: he’s not gonna make it to the bigs, he has potential but not enough. Well, guess who just won a gold medal?
in relay the baton passes can be crucial, and Italians have been almost flawless, while faster runners from other countries messed up...
Tortu was simply great in this race, but his personal best on 100m is still "only" 9.99 seconds, so indeed not quite on par with "the bigs" (who now include Jacobs!)
His speed is on par with anyone in the world, his start is terrible so his 100m mark is deceptive, if Lemaitre had trained like him and taken the same drugs as all the best sprinters do he could have beaten Bolt in 2012
@@JohnSmith-yn9ie Tortu, Bolt, and Lemaitre are tall runners standing at 6'2, 6'5, and 6'3 respectively. So bad starts are common for them. Asafa Powell who stood at 6'3 with a superior start is one of those rare exceptions

Jacobs is not a transferee and he is not just "proud of his Italian heritage". The guy lived in Italy his whole life, doesn't speak English and never competed for the US

Wrong, the reason the commentator made a point of Japan's first leg is because they were favourites for a medal. Japan would have beaten Canada at full pelt.
