24:00 - truthfully, my unpopular opinion is that most readers don't enjoy complex female characters. the guy can be grumpy, an asshole, and anything else that is commonly bad and people are willing to give him a chance. female characters do not have this chance, specially because the book is mostly in their pov, and they constantly need to be walking on eggshells to have character development
I agree, but if I was in the head of the love interest I wouldn't like him either. I think it's just cause most are in first person so your up close and personal with the fmc and so anything insufferable that they do you can't get away from.
@@fallenashes I get it. mostly I just think that annoying mmcs can be balanced out by the fmcs, but the same isn't done the other way around. my critique is mostly around that
@@juliacintrae I completely agree, I think its fine not to like a character because they just aren't the kind of person you would like in real life, but I think a lot of times people hide behind 'I dont like the character' when actually its an issue with them being hypercritical of FEMALE characters specifically. For example, I don't like Nesta, she isn't my favourite character in the SJM backlog if anything she's my least favourite character and I was actually kind of triggered by her and specifically how abusive she was to those around her (my opinion). However, I hands down think that she is the BEST character SJM has ever written because of how complex she is, because her actions are kind of ugly for the majority of the time we know her in all the ACOTAR books. Trauma and mental health are messy and can be very ugly and I loved that SJM was showing that. I thoroughly enjoyed Nest's book and her character development, and the inner workings of her mind. Did I like her? No. Were we supposed to? I don't necessarily think so, I think we were supposed to understand and sympathise with her but not agree with her behaviour and actions, I think the testament to the fact she's a fantastic character and very complex is all the complex feelings she brought out of all the readers and how no one seems to agree about her. Did I need to like her to enjoy and appreciate her story? also no. My dislike of her was purely because she wasn't someone I would like in real life, regardless of her gender, because I've literally had a Nesta in my life. But a lot of the arguments against Nesta that I see are very shallow, just like a lot of the arguments made about any and all female characters are shallow. When compared to male love interest people are very unforgiving of FMC's and make no complaints about their often less developed love interests, even when you get both POVs and are in the guys head too.

How you feel about Funny Story is how I felt about Book Lovers! I like to remind myself that it is OKAY not to love every book by a favourite author! They can still be a favourite author, and reading is subjective!

So interesting how everyone opinion differs about the same offer! Beach Read and Book Lovers are my favourite EmHen books, just finished Funny Story and I barely enjoyed it at all :( so disappointed!

22:28 Thank you for talking about this. Reading has been proven to make people a little more empathetic towards others. We start to see things from other people's POV. A lot of female readers don't have grace for female characters because they (we) are projecting ourselves onto her and want her to act as we would act. But...not everyone is the same and that's the reality. The more we start to accept that people are different and have different life experiences, situations, and reactions, the better for all of us. Although these are fictional characters...but still. We could learn and apply it in real life. :D

Me literally gasping when you said you rated funny story in the 3 stars range because i know how anticipated this read was.I mean its okay when books even from your favourite authors dont meet your expectations like not every book from them is your favourite.
I get so annoyed with romance books focusing on the exes a lot, I want the focus to be on the new relationship that the book is supposed to focus on. Ugh 😂 Book Lovers is my favorite because it made me laugh so much and I really liked the dynamic between Charlie and Nora
3:34 that's such a holly jackson writing style LOL. She makes the tension slow for the first half of her books then towards the second half everything just skyrockets. I eat it up EVERYTIME!

Totally agree that we didnt get much of miles character, however I think thats why i enjoyed reading about him so much. I feel like his character was reserved and selfless so i feel like it mightve been intentional to keep most info hidden until more towards the end. I loved how it showed someone will stick with you while you break down the walls youve built due to trauma or just simply bc thats who you are!

My opinions on Happy Place and Funny Story are completely swapped from yours, but Miles is definitely within my realm of “my type” so I’m sure that helps hahahahah. I’m obsessed with Daphne being focused on the every day rather than like huge acts of love. And developing feelings slowly over time based on little things and not even realizing that you’re falling for someone until you realize you don’t want to live without them. ❤
The reason Peter and Petra's parents don't like Miles is why maybe he wouldn't be "attractive" to some people. He's not what we're used to seeing in romance books. He's not the billionaire or the doctor or the finance guy. Miles is not the fantasy and he's not the bad boy. He's a 36 year old tattooed bartender that smokes weed and even Daphne had misconceptions about him. Personally I thought we got to know him just as well as Emily Henry's other male leads but they were just more conventionally palatable. I'm in the minority in that my two favorites are Charlie and Alex but I really loved Miles too.

When you spoke about slowing down to enjoy a book and not trying to speed through it to finish it, that really spoke to me. You won't get a second chance at the first time.🥺💖Sometimes I definitely get ahead of myself and don't stop to fully enjoy the book I'm reading. I especially do this when I have started multiple books at the same time and I'm bouncing back and forth. I really want to make a concerted effort to try to be in the moment more with the books I'm reading, especially the one's I'm really enjoying. 💜

To answer your question about if audible audio books can be played on your kindle. Yes they can, you just have to go to settings and connect a bluetooth device and then you can play the audio book on your kindle. A cool thing that I found out is that if you are listening on your kindle and you switch over to the audible app it will play where you left off at on your kindle.But if you want to read the book on your kindle and listen to the audio book it won't let you. You have to pick one or the other. Hope this helps!!

I just finished Just for the summer and it was my first Abby Jimenez book. Chapter 21 had me actually crying, and I pretty much never cry during books; that’s when I knew I loved the book 😂😅
