Life as Jewish settler in the West Bank | DW Documentary

  • The West Bank: Chaya Tal is one of 430,000 Jewish settlers living among 2.7 million Palestinians. The young German is aware that her presence alone is a provocation for many Palestinians. But that does not deter her.
These days the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Bahrain want to establish diplomatic relations with Israel, as the third and fourth Arab countries, after Egypt and Jordan. In return for the agreement, Israel wants to suspend the planned annexation of areas in the occupied West Bank, which the Palestinians claim for their own state.
"Personally, I don't see a problem in our living here", says Chaya Tal, "but rather how we live here." She believes that isolation is not the way out of the decades of confrontation in the region, but that it is by talking to each other. The Palestinian Abu Awwad also sees it this way - despite or perhaps because his brother was shot dead at an Israeli checkpoint. Together with Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger they have come up with an idea to ease the situation on the ground. A report by Theresa Breuer and Vanessa Schlesier.

It was British who gave Palestine to Israel and we can’t blame Israel for it. It was just after 2nd world war. Poor Palestinians lost their lands and rights and this continues to these days because world leaders don’t have balls to decide where will be the borderline and to make Palestine sovereign country. And I can’t defend Palestine either because it is Hamas who is bombing Israel and who is responsible for all terrorist attacks in region and I will not defend terrorists. I am not defending Israeli government for steeling Palestine’s land. I am just saying it is an extremely difficult topic and nothing is simply black and white here.

Palestine was colonized by the Ottomans, then the British, and now the Israelis after the British handed them most of the land. As for the onset of violence, the head of state for Israel at the time admitted that they preemptively attacked their Arab neighbours. Also, before Israel was 'recreated', the territory of British Palestine was in chaos as both the actual locals and the Jewish refugees were basically in revolt.

It's not as simple as that. The Jews have had a continuous presence in the land of Israel for the past 3,300 years. However, over the last 2,000 years they have not had political control over the land - but they have always been present there.
They were likely still a majority of between 200,000 to 300,000 under Roman and Byzantine rule and then afterwards their presence was concentrated in the main holy cities (Jerusalem, Safed, Tiberias, Hebron, ...) . Remember Jews pray towards the city of Jerusalem every day (similar to muslims who pray towards Mecca) . Throughout the middle ages, there are many account of famous Rabbis who moved to the Land of Israel (Maimonides, Nachmanides, Rabbi Yehuda Ha levi, Rabbi Yosef Karo, Rabbi Chaim ben Attar ).
When the Ottoman empire took charge in the 16th century, conditions were more favorable for the Jews to return and many of the small communities began to grow (especially Safed!). By the end of the 19th century, over 60 per cent of Jerusalem's population was Jewish.
When the UN approved the partition of the land in 1947, there were about 630,000 Jews which was 32% of the population - they were more or less granted the areas that had a high Jewish population (they were also given the dry Negev desert for some reason !) . They accepted the plan and established the first Jewish political rule over the land for a long time.
So there was always some Jewish population there, but it was the first time in 2,000 years that Jews had political authority over some part of the land .

Palestine derives its name from the Philistines who arrived in what was then Canaan in the fourteenth century bce, and eventually occupied the Mediterranean coastal plain from Jaffa to the Sinai. The Jews moved into Palestine from Egypt c.2000 bc but were subjects of the Philistines until 1020 bc, when Saul, David, and Solomon established Hebrew kingdoms. The region was then under Assyrian and, later, Persian control before coming under Roman rule in 63 bc. Also War determines who is gonna rule the land and control the spoils, this is how Israel been created and this is why we have 4 Palestinian out of Palestine , and this is why Palestinians who still live in Palestine are second glass citizens, and this is why they can't prevent Israel from taking over their land and homes , therefore this is why Israelis enjoy much more resources than their opponents, let's not lie to ourselves, without the Israeli army , Israel would never be exist

British colonised India and some "rulers" made friend with locals But, British remained colonial masters and Indians remained "subjects"
This is same story in Apartheid Israel , where Israelis are Colonial Masters and Arabs are 3rd class citizens.

The narrator said anyone caught talking with the other side is punished, apart from its only the Palestinians being punished and arrested and the settlers can do what they like. Arrested by the IDF not even Palestinian forces. They don't want Palestinian's talking to the settlers because the settlers will then see how wrong they are.

Not all Jews left palestine. Many stayed there alongside christians and later on alongside muslims. And many jews later on converted to Christianity or Islam. There is no way to distinguish now who owned these lands 2000 years ago.
Imagine if someone comes to egypt and says "I am descendend of pharaoh because I say so. Now give me my land back."
Should this be an acceptable cause?
