What It’s Like to Grow Up in an Israeli Settlement | Op-Docs

  • This week we bring you Iris Zaki’s thought-provoking short film “Natural Born Settlers.” A self-described liberal from cosmopolitan Tel Aviv, Zaki wanted to get behind the politics of Israel’s controversial settlements in the occupied territories - so she moved there, temporarily, setting up an improvised cafe where she could chat with settlers from her own generation.
Zaki’s previous Op-Doc was “The Shampoo Summit,” for which she took a job at a Christian Arab-owned hair salon, using a similarly playful, open-minded approach to transcend rhetoric and ideology and spark serious conversations with her fellow Israelis.

Seeing the woman laughing about being a fascist, and admitting that the feelings of her neighbors are irrelevant…. That she never cared to even think of how her neighbors felt. She even believes that there’s basically no other way to be. And she closes her statement with a huge wide open laugh. That was scary to watch. I never seen such level of entitlement and arrogance….she looked so cruel. And imagine that in order to have an idea of what happens there, you need to multiply this woman by the thousands. But she is the clear representation of what takes place in that part of the world EVERYDAY. ( I appreciate how the journalist just look at her straight in the eye…and then look down. the admission and self-awareness in a way at least carves a path that if she would be educated then her awareness that something is off would be reconciled...maybe? but people usually don't change. The scarier thing is when people are so convinced that they are right and will never accept that maybe there is something wrong out loud. The point is, we need more discussion like this one to hear the spectrum OUT LOUD, and it will take more than just one person and example, because one person you can ignore, but many, then we need to see why. Obviously her sentiment is echoed throughout which is troubling, and on both sides that we've seen in interviews.

I point this out because she was never arrested, but Palestinian children are often arrested for similar offenses and treated as criminals. If you are anti-Palestine and didn't think, "She spit on a human? What is happening in Gaza is not a massacre nor a genocide. It is the latest Palestinian irresponsible gamble of their own children's blood. Palestinians brought this onto themselves.
If the Pro-Palestine movement in the West really wants to help Palestinians they should educate them on how to be civilized, how to coexist, to renounce violence and let go, instead of investing their energy in spreading false, baseless, and delusional narratives.

There are extremists on both sides. This fiasco should be blamed on Britain. They made up the Balfour Declaration in 1917 that allowed Jews to move to Palestine and be given Palestinian passports. Mr. Balfour was a British Christian Zionist who supported the Jews. The Palestinians should make up their own declaration and call it Arafat Declaration and give all Palestinians British passports and the right to live in Britain & set up a Palestinian homeland there.

The saddest thing imagine coming to work building buildings and homes that you won’t ever be able to purchase or live in heck you probably won’t even be able to walk on the road the buildings are on. As an American I always thought oh Israelis are constantly attacked and need to protect themselves that is until I went to Jerusalem and traveled throughout the West Bank even stopping by Hebron. This trip really opened my eyes and reality smacked me across the face with my own eyes I’ve seen roads and areas that Israelis and Foreigners were allowed to be in I’ve seen roads and checkpoints specifically designated for Israelis/foreigners and one for Palestinians. I met a Palestinian family where there homes front door is on a road Palestinians are not allowed to walk on so they bolted her front door shut and the whole family needs to climb through windows or go through the back road just to go to work school or even for a simple thing as a breath of fresh air. While in Hebron i stopped by a store to get water and as I was walking I seen a Palestinian women with kids no older than three all being harassed by a group of young Israeli teens no more than 15 they were throwing garbage at the women and her kids while yelling what I think were insults all while 3 IDF soldiers stood no more than 10 feet away I tried to intervene but I was called a stupid American and the soldiers proceeded to escort me away for trying to help this woman with her kids. I left to visit Israel to experience a nice peaceful trip and what I got was opposite simply put what is happening in the West Bank is apartheid and Palestinians are second class citizens at the very best I can’t imagine to think what the Palestinians in Gaza go through.

I would put out there that the difference is that an ideology or practice that allows one person to dehumanize another lies at the foot of the problem. Another way to look at it, is by examining how people defend the truly dispicable among us. Whether we are taking about Stockholm Syndrome, press releases by a cult, or criminal defense attorneys, the fundamental principle is the same, we treat people we think we know better because we think we know them. Sadly, this does not mean we can solve the world's problems by introducing people but that was never the point. The point, to the extent there is one, is that human connections are powerful and, when possible, should be used to give people pause before they drive head first into hateful ideologies.

While they could find much more common values than they think they have and also even some values to learn from. There will surely also always be some things to disagree, but its important to simply acknowledge we all have our disagreements and negative sides. But we should focus on the good to learn and to tolerate disagreements and understand they don't need to overpower the good. It is more complex than good or bad. Hearing that the settlers are taught from birth to fear violence and attacks when their people are the terrorist was extremely hard to listen to. I get this is where they grew up and they were brainwashed into this way of thinking but that woman who literally got stabbed still managed to think critically about the situation, there is no excuse. I mean the one guy who said his dad sprayed bullets at people throwing rocks??? An M16 likely issued to him by the state to terrorize his neighbors with? It's just not normal never has been never will be. Even the researcher who seemed more moderate of the bunch was still like you get desenstized to it after seeing the workers a few times. Follow up question should've been are you concerned that you feel nothing when you see genocide happening? The thing these people lack is empathy it's astonishing that empathy can be trained out of people. These people come off as inhumane at times and it's genuinely scary.

Because I don't know that many people in the US would diffentiate that much between a Jewish person in Israel (or the occupied areas) and an Arab person. But of course there are differences. It's like when a southern Baptist tries to say there is a huge divide between them and a Mormon, or them and a Catholic. Of course there are. But they are both Americans, and both Christians, despite the differences. It's often so much easier to see all the things that divide us vs all the things that make us alike.

Living there and just accepting the idea that you're living somewhere illegally just weirds me out, like if it were fine for those houses to exist in that land they wouldn't be called settlements. The bare minimum is to accept the consequences of your own actions, you choose to help a terrorist state by living in a land that was stolen while clearly knowing that people used to live there and were forced to leave for you to stay there, that's quite literally a crime. Now idk about you but that makes me itchy i would hate participating in the oppression of innocent people when i could've chosen to just immigrate there and live with them without having to help in their expulsion. As a matter of fact, before a journalist lands in Israel, there's a whole lot of "help" organised for them. Help that functions like blinders work for a horse. They advise them on what to see, and "how to keep safe". They get escorted by a whole team you don't see in the filming who provide them with so much "extra help" in the form of extra footage and photography, and in general make it easy and tempting for a journo to be lazy yet look like they did so much coverage. That's what's really behind the scenes here. If some renegade journo doesn't comply, they get harassed, have equipment seized (just the hint of that threat steals the sleep from a journo), and may also get his/her cavities searched like a regular Palestinian. Also bear in mind that the settler community is highly militaristic and aggressive towards dissent (something brazen in those streets but the escorts have edited out on the fly), so you can't roam that area and flaunt a contrarian opinion.
