That last "200 Years Ago Today" choaked me up. Listening to Ford ask to keep the Spirit of `76 alive hurts my heart. The USA is a rotten turd burger today. Seems more "Americans" hate the USA than love it. This is the only reason I am glad Pop and all my other relatives are gone. They would all be crying and angry because of what the USA has become. Hands-up if you were a product of 1970s USA. It was a very troubled time with failed politics, unjustified war, crappy cars, and post-60s stoner mentality, but also produced a lot of great rock/disco music and hilarious big-hair fashion, and Fonzie-Ayyy! No "smart phones", no "social media" and making a difference meant getting off your ass and going outside to face reality. Glad to have come of age during that crazy decade.

Here's a fun story about the 1976 King Kong. When it was filming, there was an article or ad in the newspaper saying that there would be filming at the World Trade Center on such and such a date, and if you show up you might be in the movie! Being about 14 and living on Long Island, I convinced my parents to take us. When we got there, there was a giant dummy of the dead King Kong at the bottom of the WTC for the final scene. It was very impressive. Filming however, was going to take place at night, and we were there in the day and didn't want to stay that long. We did however to to the top of the WTC, which was very cool in itself. A great day!

The 3:17 Ford Granada commercial about cars all looking the same is much more true in 2024 than 1976. I have a Nissan Altima that looks so remarkably similar to cars made by Honda, Toyota and GM that I’ve had people accidentally step into my car and sit down in the passenger seat next to me, and only realize a couple seconds later they got in the wrong car, which was parked next to their car. Another great video about things from our glorious past Fred. Thanks for posting.

Great job, Fred! This was a big month of transition for my family, as at the beginning we moved about 1200 miles, changing schools midyear for myself and my older sister & brother.
4:45 - I think this is Paul Burke, but I'm not certain.
5:13 - The next commercial confirms that it is. My first memory of him is seeing him playing an older love interest for Julie McCoy on LOVE BOAT.
7:00 - He was gone just 8 months later.
7:53 - This became VISA just a few years later.
9:45 - Wasn't Odyssey the same as Pong?
13:30 - My favorite Pink Panther Movie! This has other great highlights like an animated opening, "Does your dog bite", and Clousseau fighting a moat to get into a castle.
14:42 - I got to see this movie at the theater. I remember poor Ned Beatty's character was knocked off on the train. I think that's "Jaws" throwing Wilder's character off the train.
18:20 - I loved this Disney film. I had the book read to my class. It had a lot less action than the movie, but they were both great. The movie's been remade a few times since.

Probably my favorite Christmas in many ways … appropriate as 1976 is probably still the most enjoyable year of my life (doesn’t say much for my adult life I know, but… lol). Comics, TV, music, sports … everything was so much fun that year. Loved Kirby’s take on 2001.
The one thing I DIDN’T love from that year is that dreadful version of King Kong. Went to see it with my dad at a downtown movie theater (as they still had those!) - and Dad always rated the 1933 Willis O’Brien version as his favorite film. We left the theater kind of shaking our heads. New Hollywood gritty realism just didn’t work for Kong - though to be fair, I don’t think the 1933 version can ever be equaled in my eyes … so I’m kind of biased towards it. I miss my Dad … sigh.

I agree completely about Kong, Chris. The 2005 version was a vast improvement, though.
