Note: Michael Shayne, Peter Loves Mary, and Shirley Temple were all on NBC rather than ABC. I was consulting an old TV Guide when I made the video and, as you know, it listed all the local station channel numbers (such as 4 and 5 rather than ABC or NBC), and I got those few mixed up in my brain. Thanks to Barry Putterman for pointing this out.

I was only 2 in 1970, so I don't remember ciggy commercials, but I remember True cigarettes, which I think were around up to the mid-80s? I liked the "Patton"-inspired AMC commercial with Kevin McCarthy. AMC was a pretty good brand, all in all. There were worse in that decade. But what was that Redford movie? Little Fausy and Big Palsy? Was Steve McQueen busy?

Getting a "man, we really need some good news" vibe from some of the commercials. America was a little whipped by the loss in Vietnam, Nixon quitting, a previous decade of assassinations and revolutions. The music was good, at least. So were the movies, though it looked like Matthau was coming at George Burns with a butcher knife, there

Great! TV Guide was always present in my childhood. My father had collected the Fall Preview issues of TV Guide dating back to the very early 60s. Remember them well as a kid in the late 60s throughout the 70s as we had a subscription. Always particularly enjoyed them for “Close Ups” on college and pro football, Christmas specials, and afternoon reruns of Lost in Space and Star Trek. Recall also searching for late night showings of old Universal horror films - knowing full well I wouldn’t be allowed to sit up late to watch them - lol.

Back when people were proud to be American. Men were actually men, and women were actually women. I'm sure indoctrination was probably happening at colleges, but nobody dared chanting "death to America" in OUR country. The kids nowadays are a bunch of socialists still stuck to their mama's teets. I was 13 years old in 1975.

Groceries on that ad was expensive. I've got 3 freezers I keep full, and just last week, I bought 100 lbs. of pork chops for $1.49 lb. 50 lb. of pork steak, $1.49 lb. Banana's for .19 cents lb. All on sale of course. Bologna was high too back then, I get it regular for $1.20 or so now. TV dinners say they are .79 cents ea. May 3rd, I just got 40 of them for $1.00 ea. The ad seems pricey to me, I remember, I had a hard time back then buying up groceries, I usually raised hogs, chickens and rabbits to eat and hunt for the rest of my meat, and grew a big garden.

I was 15 in November of 1975. A freshman. I ran Cross Country in high school. I qualified for the Sacramento Invitational Cross Country meet. In Sacramento, we saw Jaws. And it was my first high school girl friend. Her name was Mary. She ran Cross Country too. She was a sophomore. Whenever there was a home game, football, there was a dance. That Friday, Nov. 7th, was the Leauge Meet. For most of the Harriers, it was the last meet of the Cross Country season. I was joking with Mary, I asked her to hand me my sweats after my race. She did, I felt bad, because I really didn't mean for her to hand me my sweats. But, she did. I apologized, I really didn't mean it. Well I went to the dance. And she went to the game. I met her in the hallway. We started talking. We went in the gym together. We danced almost every dance. It was over in a month. Well in November of 1975, I bought my first Led Zeppelin album. Physical Graffiti. Played it all the time. John Bonham was my favorite drummer. On a bad side note, my 2nd high school girl friend turned out to be a real jack-ass. She still is.

I was a young bride in Nov. 1975. Abba music was everywhere. Elton John’s “Island Girl” played on the car radio as we drove up to Big Bear on our honeymoon, “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” was the first movie we saw together as a married couple. We subscribed to TV Guide even though we only had a portable black and white TV-we couldn’t afford that Zenith Color TV until 1978! Thanks for the memories.
