And we clearly see it in this video with the 'pundits' not putting even the slightest effort and basically tell the viewers "Don't watch it - it's a meaningless tournament and you'll be wasting your time". Why would Western viewers care when their nation/club aren't being represented? Lol. Some may watch it out of interest, but you honestly cannot expect an entire hemisphere of people to jump up and follow passionately. Differing time-zones don't help that much either. As for the World Cup, well, again, your nation is involved, you want them to do well and go far, so you might be more willing to stay up and watch them play.
Australia will always be involved in this competition and always has coverage and a following here, probably far greater than the States.
The sole reason why many Non-European nations follow big European clubs religiously is because of clever marketing, selling their brands to people. These people are seen as "plastic fans" or "glory hunters". Remember, Football today is far bigger and more globally watched than it was about 20 years ago. The pundits are failing here as they aren't doing a good enough job to sell the competition to its presumably small fanbase in the U.S.
Most European people already have passion for a club deeply entrenched in them coming from towns, cities and countries with centuries worth of Football teams well established.
On a side note, these competitions also happen mid-season, pulling key players from their clubs which hampers the club's progress in their respective leagues. Again, most people follow their club far more religiously than their national team, so this matters a lot.
Just a few things to consider.

@@1969ES175 i can only think that they are so insecure and having lots of inferiority complex within them, that they need to be reminded constantly about the past that the world is against them. Too bad.

These kinds of matters are brought all the time in soccer, if you doubt just look at the Balkan scene, no one brings holocaust when Germany plays, maybe is because Germany went through a long and painful process of getting rid of the semblance of nazism that could possibly exist in the country and constantly apologizes for the holocaust. Japan not so much.

This Is football man, a national game is just a way to remind us why we hate each other.

Respectfully, the causal fan isn’t following the Asian Cup. I’ve heard more about AFCON than the Asian cup anywhere.
Edit: UK based TalkSPORT as far as I can tell hasn’t even mentioned it.

What difference does that make? Silly comment. These people are paid to make these segments and they seem like a bunch of idiots who only just discovered the continent of Asia exists. The casual fan isn't expected to know any of this, sure, because the Asian Cup isn't a super popular tournament. Many of my Korean and Australian friends barely care about this tournament either. But they know that there is something between Korea and Japan (and if you didn't, that doesn't make it better, it just confirms that you as an individual are an idiot)

Probably because theres only a few well known Premier League players involved in the Asian Cup.
