Dr Das, being from the US I can tell you that both the mental health system and the schools do a very poor job of handling children with mh and intellectual problems. My grandchild age 11 was threatened with a gun by a classmate. The other child was suspended for the year but I have no idea if it will be further addressed. In the beginning of the school year another student made a homemade shank and stabbed another student. The school did not want to classify it as a stabbing. I know this involves politics and a trend to disregard criminal behavior.

Ominous Shihominous!!!! (SP?) Looking good, as usual! Such a tragic story. Reportedly, the shooter had a lisp and was bullied by his peer group, estranged from his mother and no father in the picture. (Neighbor of Grandparents - News Nation You Tube channel) We need the Assault Weapons Ban re-instated here in the US so that this does not happen again. Just days over 18. So sad that our legislators value $$$$$$ over our children.

This happened very close to me and it's just heartbreaking. I'm truly considering homeschooling my daughter next year. There is definitely a mental health aspect to this. Someone "sane" or in good mental health would not do such things. I think the mental health care needs to be modified as well as gun laws. It's just crazy to me that I don't feel safe sending my daughter to school when all I want to do in life is keep her safe and protect her. I'm already a very anxious person (panic attack disorder since age 15 and I'm almost 38) but this is another level and just feel helpless.

The other issue that is left out is the DV connection. 60% of mass shooters have a DV issue. So while I agree we REALLY need better mental health programs in our country, we also need to close the loopholes in the gun laws that allow those with DV arrests and convictions from obtaining guns.

I know. Yes, let's give teachers guns. Omg! I believe they start with putting up the age of buying guns to 25. Then enforce serious laws if you are caught in possession of a gun up to that age.

You look so very dapper in this interview. I am more interested in what Brits think about guns in the U.S. This is practically an everyday occurrence in America. I want to know what a culture like yours, that has strong firearm restrictions, thinks of a nation that refuses to address loss of life because of a deeply ingrained love affair with firearms. What exactly do Brits know about our Constitution and the 2nd Amendment? I am fascinated by this and welcome ANY responses from anyone living outside of the U.S. Someone in YT comments told me yesterday that the UK has just as many stabbings as we have mass shootings, and it's no big deal. 🤔 Good health and safety to you and your family, Dr. D. ❤️🌺

I think it's appalling that almost anyone who is 18 can get a gun. We last had a school shooting here in the UK in 1993 after which guns were outlawed but the USA is not prepared to follow our lead.

I'm from UK I like travelling but am scared to go to USA because of guns. OK we have a problem with knives but at least you have a chance of using self defence. A gun from a distance is far deadlier. Imho. So sorry for the people who have lost their loved ones 😔

This is the first time I’ve seen his name in a news story. I either didn’t see the ones that mentioned it or just in the US most stopped reporting the shooter’s name. In the past the mainstream media decided that it gave too much attention to the person but obviously it hasn’t helped lessen the number of them in the US. It’s sad our mental health problems are not accessible, not affordable, not listened to…it’s now easier to buy 2000 rounds of ammo and AR in Texas at age 18 than to get life saving medical procedures for a woman of any age. Because Murica.

It's just going too far. Can you imagine sending your babies to school and the high risk in America of this happening. I have cried because I cannot handle it. It can be stopped by gun laws. How does an 18 year old get his hands on fatal weapons? My heart is broken for everyone in Uvalde, a terrible thing to have happened to this community. Prayers to all especially families and friends 🙏🙏🙏🙏 I hate to say it but it's easy access to dangerous weapons. How can you control people with mental health issues accessing fire arms unless you have no fire arms to access. RIP little ones 🙏🙏💜

Exactly..what purpose is there for an automatic weapon other than killing.Any 18 year old can get in a car and go to a gun show and buy one. It’s so ingrained in the culture.I mean the US is what? 4% of the world’s population and spend more on military weaponry than the whole world combined. It’s demented.

GBBies right wing publicity achieved. Not an exactly problematic question to answer. Standard replies. Pent up brooding resentment: ruminations about past "perceived" injustices (social exclusion, bullying etc). Male, sense of inadequacy etc etc. Most of all though the plain madness & stupidity of USA gun laws. All praise be the Evangelical Christian Right, Republicans and gun lobby. If anyone reading this wants some facts about such events in the USA, check Rebecca Watsons episode & channel. Very good, empirically based, left leaning critical thinking on this, - Heard/Depp etc. Rips into the misogynistic tweets.. and, oh go and listen to the the last few episodes and make your mind up.

    Lesson: Gun free zones kill.
    RIP.
Any school employee who agrees to initial and periodic training, from janitor to principal,
should be armed as a volunteer if desired, and receive training allowance pay.
Just as when I was an airline pilot
...any pilot could volunteer to be an armed Deputy Air Marshal.
Apart from food and housing during training, this was and is a volunteer / civic duty position.
Schools should never be a "target rich environment"
Even the mentally ill I suspect know what areas have lots of armed people vs "easy pickings" aka "gun free zones"
Prayers and thoughts for the families, and the community.

      Marc Pagan
Despite the 1996 Dickey Amendment’s restriction of federal funding for research on gun violence by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Rostron, 2018), more than 30 years of public health research supports thinking of guns as statistically more of a personal hazard than a benefit. Case-control studies have repeatedly found that gun ownership is associated with an increased risk of gun-related homicide or suicide occurring in the home (Kellermann and Reay, 1986; Kellermann et al., 1993; Cummings and Koepsell, 1998; Wiebe, 2003; Dahlberg et al., 2004; Hemenway, 2011; Anglemeyer et al., 2014). For homicides, the association is largely driven by gun-related violence committed by family members and other acquaintances, not strangers (Kellermann et al., 1993, 1998; Wiebe, 2003).
