    Just a note for everyone using the barrel adjustor - rotating it clockwise will release tension and rotating it anti-clockwise will add tension. It's counter intuitive actually. That's why he rotated the barrel adjustor all the way in (clockwise) at the beginning of indexing - to be able to add tension afterwards as you most likely will. Another tip I got from their other indexing video, before adjusting the cable tension, rotate the barrel adjustor all the way in (clockwise) and then give it 3-4 turns anti-clockwise to have a bit more wiggle room in case your cable is too tight to begin with.

    Thanks to you, and this informative video which is easy to understand even for someone like me whom is a beginner MTB'er. After sending it to 2 professional cycling workshops here in South Africa, and throwing a ton of money on them, they could not get my gearing right, and eventually set my bike up but compromised my largest cog, they informed me that my bike needs a new cassette and derailleur. After watching your video and following it step by step, my bike now works smoothly on every single gear, including the largest cog :D Happy days! Well done Doddy!

    I love your tech videos especially when it comes to derailleur adjustments. I will say i feel like there is one thing that you should elaborate on...the hanger itself. As a bike tech 90% of the shifting issues i see are because of a bent hanger. Even the smallest crash can bend one and i understand that not everyone has a hanger alignment tool. But starting with a straight hanger is the base for building your shifting pyramid. Keep the content coming and keep the stashe 🤘

    • @roresteen
      @roresteen Před rokem +2

      True. So you just have to buy a hanger alignment tool. A simple adjustment that will fix 95% of bent hanger issues is: with the hanger adjustment tool threaded in, lift tool arm up where it is parallel to the floor. Standing behind the bike, pull the tool to the right where the hanger is straight and even with the plane of the bike. Then stand opposite of the rear wheel, let the hanger tool drop to to the ground where it it is now in a vertical position. Pull tool hanger handle up about parallel with the floor or until the hanger it self looks relatively straight. Remount derailleur and check for performance. if it is still bent in too much, then you need to pull out both axis's a bit till the derailleur works effortlessly. if you have pulled it too far, the derailleur will have a hard time shifting all the way too the top gear and/or tend to jam on the smallest sprocket (high gear) and frame. Side note, it is possible to adjust a cast replacement break away hanger, just be careful. It's worth trying before you replace it with a new one.

    Honestly this is the most important topic for a cycling channel. Ask any random person who doesn’t ride a bike why and they’ll usually tell you that they have a bike, but it’s broke. By broke they usually mean the gears are knackered.

  • @charlesgotlieb773
    @charlesgotlieb773 Před 7 měsíci

    Clearest explanation I've ever seen. A couple of points. At least the Shimano limit screws all seem to work so that unscrewing them counterclockwise relaxes the limit (i.e. max travel goes further away from the middle gear) and screwing them in tightens the limit. Additionally, they are usually labeled using a single tiny letter: H for high gear, the smallest sprocket, and L for low gear, the largest sprocket.
    The limit screws have two functions. The first is to limit travel of the derailleur so that the chain makes it to both outer sprockets without going past them. Additionally, once adjusted, the shifting will be at points equally divided between the two limits. If shifting one of the middle levels doesn't change the gear, and then the next shift level drops down two gears, properly adjusting both limit screws will also fix that problem.

    • @DR_1_1
      @DR_1_1 Před 3 měsíci

      Does the tension adjuster works the same way, ie unscrewing releases the tension, clockwise tightens the cable?
      I can't see any effect on my bike, when adjusting this one... it's on the derailleur, not on the shifter on my old RSX.

    Something that helps me fine tune the barrel adjuster is to turn the bars hard left and turn the barrel in the direction that the shift is having trouble moving. Works great on-trail helping out friends compensate for cable stretch.

    - *pre-stretch* new cables - insert new cable, clamp it on the very end _(excess you gonna cut anyways)_ and pull the housing away from the frame, won't need to re-adjust anytime soon
    - after resetting the barrel adjuster wind it out 1 turn, to allow some room for error
