I’m glad the father called out the Detective’s expression “we’re just getting warmed up” at the end because the one thing I hate about this show is that the law enforcers are often very sarcastic with their one-liners when dealing with very serious cases affecting people who are emotionally hurt. You can tell it was written in the 90’s even if it was well written overall. There was not a lot of space for mental health empathy.

    • @KaySan666

that one liner would have been the least of my issues with this show. Especially in this situation where a young girl was brutally raped and one of the parents, while rightfully distraught/worried, becomes snippy with the cops that neeed to ask uncomfortable questions.

That may have been why it was written this way -- to show an example of insensitivity and an example of how to call it out. You're right - it's good writing because they explore the different facets - not just those that make us comfortable.

Their empathy is finite and limited, they have to treat each case with as much objective detachment to counter whatever bias or preconceived notion they may have regarding the victims, witnesses, suspects, and culprits in order to do their job as well as they humanly can. And being consistently sensitive to other people's emotion is something humans are famously inconsistent about.

at the same time, "somebody killed our daughter" yeah and they're trying to find out who and you're all "i don't know nothing about nobody." as soon as the detectives piece together that she was in baltimore when she was raped, he stops answering questions and changes the subject, not exactly casting himself in an innocent light. if he was really so concerned about finding who killed his daughter, he'd be retracing every step she took for the last 3 weeks.

    There was an Law and
    Order episode where a
    13 yo was raped and
    murdered in her home.
    And the detectives
    were really roasting the father.
    Until the tests came back,
    the poor girl had been
    raped with a wine bottle.
    They found the broken bottle
    and the csi's found a
fingerprint or a thumbprint on it that belong to the mother. She had done all that to the daughter because she and her husband were getting a divorce and she wanted to hurt him in the worst way possible. Also, she resented her daughter because she never wanted children but her husband did. 🙄

Anyone regularly encountering awful things like homicide, drug addiction, and child abuse especially sexual abuse is going to have to desensitize to do their job. Can't remember exactly, but it would be pointless anyway as this was a crossover with homicide life on the streets. That show isn't aired anywhere anymore.

For some reason, the other series was only ever aired once and never repeated. Which is a pain for the crossover episodes.
