    • @slayer8actual
      @slayer8actual Před 4 lety +30

      I did that often in Iraq. If I felt I was close to that 30th round, I'd conduct a reload if there was a break in the contact or if someone else on my Team had the fight for a second. Sometimes I'd have a few mags in my carrier that were partial mags, so when there was a long break in the action, I'd consolidate a few of those mags to make full mags again. Like you said, I did those type of things when I wanted to or had the opportunity. I never wanted to wait until I had to scramble around looking for a full mag or search the ground around me for some stray bullets.
      On that note about stray bullets on the ground. One time I had a Soldier ask me if he should pick up the rounds he found on the ground and load them in his mags. I told him they were there for a reason so just leave them alone. If things got really bad and those were the last ones we had, then yes, use them, but until then, leave them alone.

      Eric Bergfield That same magazine disconnect feature also helps alleviate a lot of negligent discharges by new gun owners. A lot of pistols require that you pull the trigger, before disassembly. Many new gun owners will remove the mag, and not realize that there still might be a round in the chamber. Lack of experience causes this mistake to happen quite often. But, I agree. I prefer guns without that feature. What if someone is trying to wrestle the gun from your hand, and they engage the mag release button? You're then stuck holding a small hammer. lol

      Wesley Gay I completely agree, I don’t think it’s nitpicking at all. Risk management involves two factors, the likelihood of a negative event and the consequences of a negative event. If the consequence is very high (in this case death) than a risk can be unacceptable even if the likelihood is very low. I now see magazine safety as a risk I’m not willing to accept.
      As far as the grip safety, I once had a police officer tell me a story where a suspect was able to disarm him, and attempted to shoot him with his own firearm, but was unable to because he didn’t know how to operate the grip safety. It wasn’t a 1911 in the story but still something to consider.

There certainly are plenty of people unfamiliar enough with guns to not even recognize a safety lever let alone how to disengage it, but do you really want to rely upon that to ensure your own safety should your gun get away from you versus being able to fire while the magazine is out, should you need to?

I have my dad’s old 1911 .45 (accepted by the US Army Feb 1918), have fired it (now retired and vaulted), qualified on similar in the USCG in 1985,... this firearm has always had a place in my heart along with its place in history. I really hope Everyone realizes just how much patience Paul has. He goes over things that he has covered 5 or 6 times before and he does it with a grace and a lack of condescension. It would be so easy for him to ridicule the audience for not understanding, or not listening, or not doing their research and he would be well within his rights to do so. I feel like a lot of these topics that he covers are a result of people opening their mouth before they think, yet he handles it without an unkind word and takes time out of his life to recover that particular subject yet again.

      Jon Turn , don’t take this wrong, but that’s his job. If his number of subscribers never changed and everyone saw all of his videos then yes he probably wouldn’t have to rehash points or terms made in previous videos. Also, I bet that at least once in his military career he explained why one should never “assume” to a wayward E-3. Being a new subscriber to Paul and returning to shooting after a lengthy hiatus I appreciate the time he takes to explain what probably is to many an obvious point.
      He’s a well prepped instructor and excels at what he does, but if he does get to that point where he tires of reiterating points from previous videos then it’s probably time to move on to making more dental hygiene videos. Thanks.

    GLOCK TRIGGER “SAFETY”: I was going to make a PSA video for new Glock owners, warning them that Glock’s trigger safety is really intended to keep the pistol from firing if it’s dropped. Check Glock’s website to verify. The trigger’s center blade is easily depressed, and things like jacket drawstrings, other clothing obstructions, and fingers will easily allow the trigger to be actuated. Keeping it in its holster until needed, is “safe”. EDIT: Paul said the Glock’s trigger “safety” kept the pistol safe from accidental swipes, but that could give new owners a false sense of security.

      Frank Butta I’ve carried a Glock on duty and off duty since 1998 and I’ve never had a malfunction with them and no need for a thumb safety, when a bad guy pulls out a gun you have a split second to react and you don’t need to be messing with a thumb safety. I’ve owned 8-1911s and they were not reliable(many were super expensive). A Glock is a war fighting handgun used by a navy Seals, you keep finger off trigger until you need to kill someone that’s your safety.

From the late 80’s -early 90’s IPSC, I use a Smith and Alexander Ambi mag release. It works well for me, competition or not. I’ve never inadvertently dropped a mag etc. Works in most leather holster and some Kydex, but check. S&A not around anymore but you can find them at Cylinder and Slide, Karl Lippard, BH Spring Solutions and Bulletworx. With minor fitting they work. I also swap the mag release on my plastic pistols. Not for everyone, but made me more efficient. Just food for thought. Man, I like me some Paul !!

    I have a RIA Tactical model. The ACT mag that came with it broke within a week (split feed lips). I use Kimber Pro Tac mags now. Just my 2 cents.

      I remember the "bad old days" of the '80s when you would buy 20 mags to find a half a dozen that worked in YOUR 1911. The mags really weren't that bad, it was just that specs between different guns of even the same MODEL were different enough that mags might be reliable in one pistol but NOT in another. There was a lot of "horse-trading" mags in many shooting circles. I remember the same thing being done in the Army with the old 30-rounders for the A1. You'd swap mags around until you got 8 mags (in our unit anyway) that ran reliably in YOUR A1 rifle. Then we got the new A2 and new Stanag (or for you older GIs STANO) NATO standardized 30-rounders and never swapped again. The new mags just worked.

      @Mark03 11 Thing is, none of this will give him anymore attention than what he has left. If anything, it's only going to lead to him losing more subs and getting more thumb-downs
