@@hectorvazquez4528 we all got that part dude.
What blew me away in my testing of the Xtreme Defenders was that no matter what I put in front of that bullet; sheet metal, rigs, clothing, wood, drywall, and even Level 2 body armor it consistently penetrated all the above and 12"-18" of ballistics gel. Yes, even Level 2 body armor. If ever there were a "magic bullet", this would be as close as we've come.
Might have something to do with the fluted leading edge and the sectional density of the projectile. But this is purely conjecture.
If you have no concern about over penetration.
The reason it c was n penetrate levrl two body armor is due to the extreme velocity of that solid light weight bullet.
Tests done on 9mm FMJ at velocities over 1400 fps will evrn penetrate level 3A armor.....stated right on military vests.
Same here. I carry the 120 gr 45 Super load.
I carry 90g Extreme Defender 9mm at 1400fps. Also rotate round with 50g Civil Defense and a fmj after 6 rounds.

Paul, it amazes me that these jurisdictions that don't allow hollow-point ammunition are so UNINFORMED. Time and time again I see Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) ammunition go clear through long ballistic gel blocks where hollow-point ammunition does not. Clearly FJM poses the greatest danger to those in the immediate and intermediate area of a shooting incident. It amazes me that these local jurisdictions are more concerned with the life of the perpetrator than they are with the lives of the innocent by-standers.
And thanks for another very interesting and informative article. Peace, love and happiness to you, your family and crew.

I honestly started liking your videos because you found a way to bring the word "shire" into a gun video. Respect.
Excellent video. I'm delighted that the xtreme defense "phillips head" bullets made a good showing on the meat target, that's in line with the good showings they seem to make on gel. I use these rounds for carry, and I'm glad they passed the meat test.
I agree, they seem to be a good choice for sure. I carry them in my 380 because they penetrate well, not as much as FMJ would which is a good thing, and they cause more damage than FMJ. They are one of very few 380 loads that stay within 12-18" in gel and do some damage.
I will echo that reply as I too use these in my EDC
Question is can you afford to fire enough of them to know they are reliable in your gun and know where they will hit? That’s the issue with “hyper” ammo. This is why I like HST in boxes of 50 that don’t break the bank.
I've shot enough in the couple of guns I carry it in to feel comfortable with my choice. For smaller calibers like 380 and 32 I think its worth the extra money to have the best self defense ammo I think is out there. For my other carry guns, mostly 9mm and a couple 38s I favor Gold Dots but HSTs are a good choice too.
@@kftc1980 I hear what you're saying. But the fact is that they're not THAT much more expensive than really good, bonded hollow points. I've shot a LOT of them (in 380, 9x19, 357 SIG, 40 S&W, 10mm, and 9x25 Dillon), and I've never had a single problem in (obviously) a variety of pistols.

Good information, Paul. I recently bought my first 9mm EDC. I've always carried a 5 shot .44 Spcl loaded with handloads and 215 gr lead SWC. My confidence level was high with accuracy and stopping power. Wasn't pleased with having to go with a small bore handgun for defense but I guess I'm at that age now. Anyway, I was glad to see this video since I am carrying FMJ. Haven't invested in a megabucks box of defensive ammo yet, but at least I can hit my target with the FMJ well enough to eat the center out of the bullseye at 15 yd.
That was really surprising. I would have assumed the results would have been exactly opposite. Thank You Paul. I do love some practical proof and undeniable facts.
Larry Thompson Opposite? Why?????
@@jamiesloan5902 I using years of preconceived ideas about bullet shape and penetration, felt that the exposed core would expand the most... the bullet made of a solid metal with a shaped tip would penetrate like a AP round.

I can't believe his lapel stayed that way through the whole video, obviously his Wife or Mom wasn't filming.
Happy to see this comparison for 9 mm, but would really like to see something similar with mouse guns. The advice you often see with calibers like .32 ACP is to forget about hollow points and stick with FMJ. You can find results with ballistic test gelatin, but it would be nice to see how this works with the meat target. Would the damage with either kind of round be pretty much equivalent, given that you probably won't get much expansion with the hollow point rounds? I use .32 ACP as an example simply because a KelTec P32 is pretty close to invisible as a concealed carry gun.
Interesting results as always! Another very informative Paul Harrell video. I'm a fan of Underwood Industries ammo, so I'm pleased to see this result.
This guy always has something fun in those pockets
Excellent informative video as always, Thanks Paul.
One not so quick note here for anyone who is interested. Always make sure your intended ammo will work in each specific pistol you plan to use it in. Never assume "It worked fine in my other pistol" means it will work in all your pistols. Or any other firearm for that matter.
Case in point: I just bought a Springfield Armory XDs .45 mod 2. For this story the Glock G41 Gen 4 is the Glock in question. I use Walmart's bargain basement Federal "Champion" 320 grain FMJ aluminum case ammo in my Glock, without issue. I expected to use it in my XDs without issue as well, but to my amazement the Federal ammo dropped nearly a foot and a half in 30 feet when fired from the XDs. Yes I said a foot and a half, 18 inches drop in 30 feet. I honestly thought something was broken in the new gun, but the gun is actually fine.
I switched to Fiocchi then fired my 5 test rounds, and hit approximately 2 inches low at 30 feet.
Using Magtech I put 2 of the 5 test rounds fired into the bullseye.
I am still experimenting. Other ammunition brands and types will follow, but I will not bore you all with that. This is a true apples to apples comparison between ammunition, but in two very different guns. All the rounds fired were 230 grain FMJ round nosed ball ammunition, no weight differences, no projectile shape differences, etc. as I said apples to apples. With very startling different results. I am not bad mouthing any manufacturer here, just the opposite, it is entirely the guns that make the difference. My Glock put 7 out of 13 in the bullseye and a 4" grouping at 30 feet with the same Federal ammo as proof of this not being bad ammo.
The point of this story is to underscore that you must always test your actual pistol, with the actual ammunition you intend to use. If you want to know you are good to go, when you have to be, test with your actual exact combination or you may find you have a real problem at the worst possible time.
Any way if you read all that, I wish you well and I hope the story is helpful. Thanks again Paul for all the hard work, it is appreciated.
That's odd, you should contact Springfield about that. I had/have the XDS .45 in both the 3.3 and 4.0 and both of them were/are equally accurate with all of the ammo that I've used.
With Paul at the range in the rain I was waiting for some silly pajama pants
Thank you for all your videos! I commend your dedication to all of us by standing out in the rain making the video.
Thanks Paul, great info as expected from you. This one was especially good to see: It validated test results which used of my own version of your meat target. I used your method to test the Underwood Extreme Defender in both 9x19 and 380 ACP. Based on the success of my tests I have been carrying this ammo for the past year. Your test gives me even more confidence in my choice of carry ammo (that included very good results even when fired from my smallest carry gun, a Ruger LCP). I also tested point of impact in my two usual carry guns and they were pretty much true to my point of aim, as they were with my old Federal HST HP rounds (7 and 15 yard distances). I was very pleased with that. Recoil seems softer with the lighter Underwood rounds even though they have much higher velocities. The meat target tells a more, real world story than ballistic gel. You designed an excellent testing media!!

Huh. I figured the screwdriver head rounds were mostly just a gimmick. Neat! Always love a video with the meat target and of course the new-and-improved-high-tech-fleece-bullet-stop.
Now I see why my local cops use them.
The "channels" the shape creates probably end up pushing tissue/fluid in a way that increases hydrostatic effects, and the force of the redirected whatever probably acts as a type of brake like thirst reversers for jet engines.
They are Supercavitating bullets, but theyve been nerfed to avoid piercing soft body armor like the old designs from the 70s would. Those were shaped a little like a ball point pen, and cause ALOT of internal damage. Look up "THV" ammo. I expect the real purpose of the xtreme penetrators was to use the fluid channel disruption like a set of fins on an arrow to resist yawing so the bullet pierces deeper into meat. The fins arent sharp either, so they dont help with kevlar penetration.

I'd be interested to see how that bullet concept does at really really high velocities. They have an 80 grain one for the 30 carbine and a 50 grain one for 32 acp (.311"). I bet the 80 grain pill out of 308 would be smoking (300 blackout, 300 ham'r, any .308" rifle cartridge, hell even 30-30), and the 50 grain out of an sks or ak as well. Be interesting to see if they do more damage, less, expand, break apart, etc.

I'm becoming more and more impressed with that Underwood ammo. Consistent penetration and perceived damage and no need for any concern about a hp round NOT expanding. Also looks.to.be a great choice for hp picky 1911s. I dont know why but Sig ammo nosedives on the first round regardless of how the round is chambered.
mrpibb7781 and if you carry a 10mm, their xtreme defender is fast enough to punch through most armor too. Very helpful when considering that mass shooters are very often armored. Also, they're more barrier blind than hollow points so if the target is hiding behind a car or counter (and you know there are no innocents there) you can reliably blast through their concealment.
I'm very interested in 1911 ammo and those Underwood bullets aren't the best feeding wise. They have sharp edges and present a different bullet/ramp angle depending on how the cartridge happens to be turned in the magazine. Not to say that they don't work - they do, just not better than many others.
I've had good results with Golden Sabers, they're very round for HP. Same for Gold Dots and Win T&D.
But I've found magazines really have a far more profound effect on 1911 feeding than pretty much anything else.
mrpibb7781 It's not the ammo. It's the 1911. Horribly unreliable design. But, also classic, and gorgeous firearms. I wouldn't carry one for self defense. Too many guns out there that RUN.
@@jamiesloan5902 we'll agree to disagree on that one but everyone's entitled to their opinion. I absolutely trust my life to a 1911. Ergos, trigger and accuracy are second to absolutely none. And I've never had a single issue with anything but Sig so seems like an easy choice to me.
@@jamiesloan5902 Any 1911 with a fully ramped barrel should have the same feeding reliability of any other modern handgun. In my socialistic area, the local commissar(prosecutor) will charge you with some form of homicide even if it is a justified shooting, just for using any projectile other than FMJ. (PS, DON'T have any "Punnisher" logos anywhere on your weapon)
Out of curiosity, what does your local jack boots use when they are on duty? I'll bet 10 to 1 that its some sort of HP, and i would be sure to point that out if i was ever on trial.
@@DH-xw6jp Jack Boots . . . What kind of BS remark supposed to represent?
@@oldcop18 im calling the people that write laws that ban "scary" bullets and demand you use _the worst possible ammo_ assholes.
And any law enforcement that arrest people for defending themselves with the "wrong" type of bullet are authoritarian, especially since the odds are good the cops (read jackbooted assholes) are using the same "bad" bullets to defend themselves.
If its legal for them, it should be legal for everyone. . . any other "rules for thee but not for me" nonesense leads to thugish attitudes that make them feel above the laws they enforce.
Hot DAMN and Happy Friday Folks, cannot be much better of a Friday than when a New Paul Harrell video premiers, Greatly impressed with that Underwood ammo. Amazing performance yet it was dang near stopped dead by the T-Shirt. My opinion previously had been "Overpriced junk, why bother". I'm going to test some personally now that I've seen your presentation. Great work and as always thank you for what you do for all of us CZcams Yahoo's. As well I think all of us would be up for buying some Merch with some of your Choice sayings on them OR just a pic of the Meat Target on it.
