I hate what "but thats just a theory" has become, because to me, matpat never meant it as a shield for criticism, it was meant as a "hey, heres our evidence and conclusion, you see something wrong? Help us fix it", and the fact people cite it as just being like "this doesnt matter, its just a theory" makes me feel horrible
Why? It’s true lol. It’s JUST a theory. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s not supposed to be.
@cajunking5987 exactly, I mean people have interpreted it as matpat saying "WOAH, DONT CRITICIZE ME, it's just a theory bro". I, of course, have no idea what matpat truly means, but always took it to mean that this is matpat just trying to start the convo, if it sucks, help don't attack
They should do some kind of "Community Notes" recurring feature where the theorists address any fact-checks to their videos. Kind of like Seth Meyers' weekly Corrections to his late night show

@@gabrote42 Yep, it's kinda funny how Matpat has a background in Neuroscience apparently and then proceeds to use theory and hypothesis interchangeably. I get that it's a good and catchy name but I don't remember any gametheory episode ever address something as an hypothesis. Oh the irony :,)
To be fair to game theory its hard to understand where the hate is coming from when people arent telling them whats wrong they are just being told that the theory was stupid.
Yea, I was gonna say that. I don't know this youtube, but he's also making mistakes by claiming that Mat is redirecting the hate when that's not what MatPat did. Like at all. He even admits his mistakes but as you say, he is told he is wrong but never why. And since this youtube is against misinformation, he just did that just now. I never read the books, but I seen matpat videos. I know what he just said. and there is info in this video that is plain wrong. Yes, I will get hate for saying this, but tell me why instead of insulting me. If you cant, then leave it alone please.
It would've helped if the constructive criticism that existed could have been channeled through someone directly to explain the what and why, not random comments.
The short comments used in that 'HateTheory' video were just hateful and misrepresented real criticisms of GT as nothing but insults. Or it pulled one line without the full context/explanation from a multi-paragraph page. There wasn't an inquiry into WHY people didn't think they did much research, only that it was negative so it must be 'hate'. There can't be a discussion if there's no distinction between hate and criticism.
GT has the greatest influence and these people wanted them to relay info accurately. They didn't hate GT but have been frustrated for a long time without things being properly addressed; that 'HateTheory' video definitely did not help to say the least. *BUT* here now with Tom as host, so far GT seems to have truly listened, understood the criticisms and corrected course. Now everyone is quite satisfied and we're all moving forward🥳
There's one factor that a lot, and I mean, A LOT of people forget about Game Theory FNAF that you just pointed out : Tom was the MAIN WRITER FOR ALL FNAF THEORIES SINCE 2 YEARS, while MatPat mostly was just checking the text to see major errors and not just details, and voiced over. Which means that inacuracy and errors in searching and writing are HIS mistakes, not MatPat's (before anyone lash out : I love Tom, I don't blame him, I just put records straight).
So if people really sent hainous comments towards MatPat for "his inacuracy" and his whacky theories, but the moment Tom becomes the new host they go "Finally, someone with good writing"... I just feel the main complains come from people who hate MatPat and will find reasons to discredite him, instead of having people actually being annoyed by poor researches and misleading informations.
One has to wonder, if MatPat wasn't able to do the research himself, could he have unintentionally inserted misinformation into an otherwise well-written script while making his own edits to it in order to deliver it more naturally?
It's common practice to re-write something you're going to be reading AT LEAST into chunks of the original text that flow better for you to say out loud. If he was tired/hurried, even if he didn't mean to make any changes to the content, he could've simply copied it down wrong. The main change from the previous videos to this one is that Tom is now overseeing the ENTIRE process through to the end, with no one else being able to override his writing at the last minute.

I doubt he would have done that for facts he wasn't entirely sure of. Mat probably did do a lot of tweaks on the scripts, but I'm betting it would have been things like wording and jokes rather than changing the facts and research unless it was something that he was absolutely adamant about, and if Tom KNEW it was factually incorrect information that he could easily cite, then he would surely push back against it. I very much doubt that Mat would make changes to the script and not tell his team that he's done so.
Id like to go on record that Matpat and Tom have gone on record saying the books are a headache to read at times and let's be real those books come out too frequently. I wouldn't be surprised to start brainstorming theory ideas as fast as possible the writers have to read those books as fast as possible which can easily lead to misremembering small details and that my end up carrying through drafts to final versions of the script. This just feels like Occam's Razor the simplest explanation is probably the right one.
@@gaymerjerry Yeah this makes the most sense to me. They have to read these things every couple months and from what I hear they aren't very good, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a lot of skimming going on
Mat has always worked on the FNAF theories himself though, he just wasn't the sole contributor. I doubt this was the case.
As someone who believes that the books are a separate story from the games, this is a great theory and I’m glad that tales-believers enjoyed this video as well

My take on the books is a more agreeable one (at least I think it is). I believe that the continuity of the books is not canon to the games at all, they are just supposed to give concepts that could happen within the games timeline (such as with to be beautiful showing how remenant can have the effect of changing the things you and others see, being like a forced will upon others)
It's interesting, because I noticed a little bit of this (missing important info or misinterpreting it) in some of Matpat's Sonic the Hedgehog theories and A LOT in the Pizza Tower theory.
I can't tell if Team Theorist is/was being worked so hard that they either miss crucial information to try and complete the theory video by a deadline, or they intentionally gloss over it, believing it to be a minor detail or something else...
If Tom is both writer and head of the Game Theory channel (or however that works after Matpat's retirement), then he may have the ability to spend more time by himself researching and "going insane" and looking into every little detail of FNAF there is for when a theory video is made.
(Let's not forget Matpat has a family to take care of for a while now and this could've also accidentally unintentionally clouded/distracted his mind during theory-crafting.)
(There might also be a little bit of "light" gaslighting involved where possibly Team Theorist believed that if they don't mention any mistakes or make the evidence sound credible enough, then the people who don't read the books/know the lore will believe them, but obviously that didn't work for the real fans who actually played/read the FNAF lore.)
Not trying to throw hate, just mentioning some possible/plausible ideas for WHY Matpat's theories were a little bit flawed and caused the hate to begin with... 😓

I think you hit the nail on the head.
There was a little internet Drama a little while ago with Linus Tech Tips, in which (amongst other things that are unrelated) they were accused of having multiple errors in their tech review videos, because they were rushing them out the door so quickly. It feels like there are parallels, since both channels are big enough to have employees and other people's livelihoods at stake.
It's not a perfect parallel... but it provides precedence for the presence of a pernicious problem.
I would like to add about the worked so hard part. MatPat did grow from one channel to 4 and could have been running himself thin on top of life changes. With the four channels now having separate heads might make the workload lighter to more manageable for all of them.
Idk how their company is set up but I assume with the handing off each channel has a dedicated team of script writers so they can be more focused on their specialty.

I wonder if the new "heads" of the channels who previously wrote theories with Matpat narrating them in the past theory videos, was mostly during a time where he had to check and make sure every proposed theory went by him/went under review by him, and possibly some things were either removed or missed during this "Matpat Proofreading" phase...
Also, I think since Matpat "signed off" his channel a while back, that company is handling the business side of things while Team Theorist keeps making theories. Idk if that company they signed off to actually has any say or effect to the theories they put out. 🤷♂️

To- to be fair like when he said it was purple, he didn’t mean it literally, because of the lighting effect, it’s symbolic we see Scott doing these things multiple times where he’d use similes and metaphors to make the darker meaning like, “you’re broken” “I feel you’re broken” it was meant metaphorically but after was made literally
"The Fredbear bite looking ice cream was removed in Ruin." I mean... was it though? That is a completely different ending that only resembles the one in Security Breach. Saying it was removed makes it sound like that ending in Security Breach had the ice cream replaced, which I do not think is the case. It is not like the name Cassidy being replaced in Princess Quest. That Security Breach Ending shouldn't be ignored just because an ending in the DLC is referencing it. By that same logic you could say Glamrock Freddie's head was removed in Ruin and use the fact H.E.L.P.I is there instead as proof Glamrock Freddie never had a head. It just feels like a leap in logic.
The reason why it's called out, is because Vanessa keeps her mint chip, they intentionally chose to change just Greg's ice cream, keeps Vanessa's and remove glamrock freddy and replace him with helpi, who's icecream has the glamrock freddy colours. They chose to change everything, but keep the mint for Vanessa. Why?

@@Trecherousbeast yes, I am, for the very simple fact they let Vanessa keep her mint, and gave helpi a glam freddy colourd cone. So them changing Greg's does seem to be intentinal given they've shown they can keep it the same if needed, and that they put thought into helpi's ice cream, because, again, he has the glam freddy colours since he replaces glam freddys spot from the "vanny redeemed" ending, as sb's files pit it.
@@Crystal-pro-2024 I thought Helpi's Ice Cream colors were a reference to his eye color changes being both blue/teal and yellow depending on if it was the mimic talking or actually Helpi.
@@fnaffoxy1987 I could see that, but given Vanessa kept hers, Greg changes his, and helpi replaces glam freddyz it's way more likely a reference to that fact, because it's also got a lot of orange and blue, which are glam freddys predominant colours, especially since brown is dark orange so making him lighter makes him more orange
@@Crystal-pro-2024 Fair enough. Looking at it again, it's just a bit annoying when discussing colors that it's still basically a sunset or sunrise since that changes what the colors appear to be. Gregory's shirt is blue, no doubt, but because of the setting it appears purple. Then there's the shadow of the tree they're under, both of these things can make colors appear darker or a bit different. I'm only pointing this out because yellow can appear orange in this setting, but it works both ways because it's yellow/orange.

The one thing I realized that that theory used mostly the game details while the books were used to prove and find little details for that theory while all Security Breach theories used 90% of the time the books. Like Scott said the books can fill in small gaps or details of the lore which people still don't seem to understand. Simply by using the games you can figure out the lore much better than by using the books since the books are not canon to the games and only small details from the books actually help.
We have come along way from people hating on matpat for using the books to most theories using the books more than games
While at the start this was true and honestly a pretty decent way for Scott to spread small clues and hints in otherwise irrelevant stories, more recent things like GGY and the Mimic have brought in reveals that are wayyy too important to be relegated to a Tales of the Pizzaplex book. I doubt this will happen again considering how much backlash there’s been, but yeah it sucks that they’re now required in order to understand some of the more recent lore, and that these elements weren’t naturally brought into the universe through a mainline game release.
I definitely agree Tom has come a long way. But also cutting him so slack since he is dyslexic. But overall he has come along way.
This is exactly what i like about Tom's new theory. It is much more well-researched and grounded that the others. For what i know, Tom and Matt wrote the theories together, so who knows how much influence over the final result did Tom have. I think Matt doesn't read the stories himself (Although i could be wrong), he had no time to, so Tom read them, and they made a theory together regarding that book. Maybe Tom let some small details to be not-well laid out into the scripts, so when they actually came out, they came off as badly researched or flawed.
To be fair, Matpat had started with one channel which turned into 4 (and technically 5 if you count GTlive) and during that time he has gotten married and had a family. Combine all of that and you’ll definitely understand why he has basically “retired.”
I genuinely think that MatPat read the books but he probably forgot small details which is ironically what Scott said was what you need to look for when making connections with the books and the games.
I don’t think Mat intentionally was giving misinformation. So far, I have only noticed these problems with Film Theory and Game Theory and when you think about it, it makes sense. Films and Games are an art form meaning people have very different interpretations about what said art means. Matpat might of thought this clue meant this thing Tom thinks the same clue means something else. Basically, there is a lot of factors into why Mat’s theories were flawed or had misinfo in them.
I can't necessarily blame Tom for what I'd assume is inadvertently spreading misinformation when doing the research for the theories during the past 6 months or so despite misquoting the same source like saying Chica was Edwin's first animatronic in one theory when really she was his eighteenth in this most recent theory. I'll be honest, I feel like I would've made that mistake as well at least once or twice. Not to mention, people were still hesitant to consider the books as canon despite the clear signs that they were to some degree. As a result, everyone was just confused as to what was likely or unlikely to be true.
Something that surprised and impressed me is that I haven't seen anyone throwing a fit over the fact that Tom used art from LadyFizsi as evidence. Good on you, guys! You're finally growing up and realizing that just because the artist did a bad, it's art that Scott specifically licensed and copyrighted, meaning it's still valid for theorizing! Good on all of you!

Honestly people hated the theories without knowing evidence was false to begin with, I’m sorry but you are going to tell me that many people actually read these books and fact checked them and didn’t just get mad at the theory they didn’t like you are fooling yourself, your point is true but I’m not giving the hate credit like that as people have been hating on game theory for a long time now, also the same guy is still backing the theories so it doesn’t really doesn’t really disprove anything till we see otherwise

I'm happy that game theory is getting back on track. I think that if more theorists put the same amount of accuracy with other things such as the fazbear frights then lore wouldn't be such a headache.

I honestly didn't even know the theories were getting some facts wrong. I had stopped watching these videos for a long time (the last theory I fully watched was on how to make the perfect burger lol), I was just _done_ trying to understand this series' lore. I still kind of am, but I'll try to understand things in a more casual way. Glad to see things have been looking up a bit more lately!
Im glad tom had a redemption arc but I did enjoy alot of the theories including gregory being a robot but I'm glad Tom has now stopped making these mistakes. I dont read the book or play the games I just like listening to fnaf theories

Well, the thing is that Game Theory is a REALLY BIG channel. The expectations on it are more insane than in a channel of someone who just got invested in the Lore, that's why people are factchecking GT.
Besides, as far as I can tell, most people that don't like the theory just leave instead of writing a comment(people liking your theory would be more likely to write about it I think lol), but even if they do, it's understandable to get some things wrong, so just don't be discouraged if you really want to write theories for someone to see, some people are just trying to help and if the person is hating you because of a fnaf theory of someone who just started...well, that shows who they are more, right?

The book thing I don’t think is cannon, it opens up a nasty can of worms and contradictions but I do think some of the stories are canon, just not all. But Tom’s so far doing great!
Also it helps that the new video was actually something new and not a retreading or puking on of more evidence to an already done theory

Cuz tales are stories that takes place before SB, theyre prequels so they cant be alternatives of anything that never got shown in the games

It's not just Fnaf, many of the theories either skipped over lore or context. One of the last videos I saw from Game Theory was Kirby is a Villain part 1. They showed videos where Kirby was watching something unfold alongside Kind Dedede and Metaknight, then proceeded to claim Kirby was the only one wrong for not taking action.
If what you say is true and they're doing better fact checking, might just start watching GT again.

As much as I agree with your points: The video still does misquote the books, claiming that the Mimic had once appeared as a mass of black wires.
They definitely still have a few hurdles to get over.

I actually believe it wasn't Tom's fault in the past. Mat has explained how he was part of the writing process (along with other writers, not just Tom) in order to feel more comfortable reading the script. With that and the fact he probably wasn't available for his own research, there may have been inconsistencies while rewriting that the team just straight up missed. Now with Tom as the lead writer and host, there's no need for rewrites, at least no as many, so inconsistencies are more unlikely
I appreciate you not pinning the negativity on Matpat, considering that it WAS always Tom behind the camera writing the theories at the time
I find that the thing i did not like about the response to the hate is that they did not get to the actual point of the criticism people had. It went against the point of the video by talking about why they're right rather than getting to the point of don't hate on people, give criticism with valid reasoning. It was a step in the wrong direction and clearly they're trying to solve the issue
The Fredbear Icecream being "removed" in ruin means nothing. That Brasil ending wasn't Canon AND is also just Cassies hallucination while the Mimic ripped her apart or something anyways (The ending name is a reference to a scene from a movie where that basically happens) so either way it wasn't really real.

This isn’t really tom’s first fnaf theory it’s just the first that he’s hosted, he’s definitely wrote some or at least helped write previous theories that mat has hosted too, I think the difference now is more just less minds working on the one theory at once so it’s a bit more coherent rather than people trying to gather different evidence all across the place and put it together

I honestly despise this video quite a bit.
We are talking about a franchise with a ton of books of different canon bits, games that supposedly explain the missing bits of previous game and an author that has taken a step back from the whole ordeal, letting entire new directions flourish. The concept of "misinformaton" is outright stupid.
Everyone can build their own narrative taking bits of this and bits of that and make something entertaining and make sense. Having Chica being the first makes a lot of sense standing on a clear on the face quote from her in the game, just as being one of the few murders we actually get hints. So the books say otherwise? But the books say a lot of different bits, including character's names. What's the problem of taking bits of it and leaving some out? It's not like you can fully wrap yourself about everything.
No, they hate Matpat. Most people just outright hate Matpat out of resentment. And they will cheer on Tom for taking over the channel of the one they hated. There is no reason to be so shitty on something that should just be interesting. You are not addressing the whole "Gregory is a robot" that pissed off everyone. Uh, uh, a robot human on a franchise of robos that come alive with the souls of children. Oh it's such a leap of logic.
