PRO vs BEGINNER CYCLIST! (What's the difference in SKILLS, POWER and SPEED??)

  • How BIG is the difference between a beginner and a pro cyclist? We put it to the TEST! head to head in handling skills, power numbers and endurance speed and the results will SURPRISE YOU!
    * The cycling kit in this video: 👉 srko.co/verkuijl
    Roel is a BBQ expert and has just started cycling this year and has (when we shot the video) about 600km of cycling experience. That is about 1-2 hours a week for 6 months. He is a cycling fanatic already but still has a lot to learn about bicycles and training. In this video I'm not only comparing our skills and power numbers, I'm also teaching Roel a few things about cycling. Think about tire pressure, power meter, how to brake hard, how to do a track stand etc etc.
    I (Jasper) have a bit more experience in cycling with about 20 years of BMX racing background and racing road bikes since 2017. I train about 10-15 hours a week which comes down to +- 15.000km a year. I'm not actually a Pro cyclist, but I've raced with and against pro's and I'm very serious about training. A very big difference to Roel. But how does this difference in experience and training show in our skills, power numbers and speed? How fast am I compared to Roel? Can Roel even follow my wheel if he wanted to? Those are the questions we will answer in this video!

      Comparing efficiency in windy conditions. Example an 1 hour lap with 50% tail/head wind. What would be better, full gas with the head wind or full gas with the tail wind. And the other 50% with "normal" watts. (So example of the example lol Tailwind 450 watts for 30 minutes and 250 watts headwinds vs headwinds 450 watts for 30 minutes and 250 watts tailwinds). What would the time difference be. *edit* ok a smart person would say that there is no difference.... difference in distance then.

    Cool comparison! Thanks. In my opinion, for a guy who did 600 km on a bike, Roel is doing just great. He undoubtedly has skills from the cycling experience in his earlier years, is in a quite good form physically and didn't spare any expense for the equipment he is using. He surely can get better results with proper training, but it seems he enjoys cycling in a different way than you do. There are many of us out there enjoying nature and the experience of covering long distances by bike, challenging ourselves and competing with our personal results only. We will never be pros and get even near the point where you are with skills, speed and power, but still we have a cyclist's heart and that is what really matters in the end. With our will we compensate for the lack of skills and form, and learn along the way, with time. This kind of videos help us get there faster. 🙂 Cheers!

    Ability levels among cyclists can differ a lot, probably more than most sports actually. But cycling is one of those activities where if one does it often enough, then every-time on the bike will see an improvement in performance, endurance & ability and possible more importantly, enjoyment too! You can almost feel your heart & lungs becoming more efficient every ride you do!

    Very funny video but let me clarify something, Jasper's sprint power is world class. Very few cyclists can reach 1,700+ watts in a sprint including sprinters at the world tour level; for example Cavendish (arguably the greatest sprinter of all time) max's out in the 1,500's. Retired sprinter Marcel Kittle (one of the biggest sprinters to succeed at the world tour level) max sprint is 1,940. Point is that Jasper is a beast of a sprinter!!!

I was always a skinny guy and never very athletic but I briefly touched on the world of cycling for about 18 months in my early 20's purely for commuting purposes, but really enjoyed it, and had to climb the steepest hills in Adelaide every day to get home. 46km/day, 5 days a week, and then fun rides on weekends. By the end of this period, I would often break spokes if I took off too quickly. This was back in 96 and my computer didn't measure power, just speed etc. But yeah, my thighs were bulging at the end lol. I should've continued cycling as a pass time. Definitely a regret.

    Really great video. It was amazing to see how huge gap is between elite cyclist and "beginner". Roel is definitely not an average Joe :) He already has good skills (putting jacket when driving, producing quite high speeds) and quite sporty. A gap between a real average Joe (overweight man, no skills, driving hybrid bike, etc.) and elite cyclist would be really enormous.

    This reminds me of how much better I got while riding with my friends who were riding a lot.... Eventually, I surpassed them though as my gears were not working and I was stuck riding in 6th gear on a much heavier bicycle so when I got gears back I was definitely the best at climbing hills due to it suddenly becoming easier

    Jasper, I had a thought. Its rare that I have thoughts so I wanted to post this quick before I forgot it. Maybe you could include more of your flight and cockpit footage on your way to your destinations for cycling. Or anytime that you have some flights that might be interesting to see. I've always had interests in being a pilot. I'm sure many of us envy you. Just so we can live our lives through you :). Maybe its to off topic of cycling for your content? I think its very unique from other youtubers because you have such an interesting way of traveling all over the world and cycling. You could showcase it more.

    • @jasperverkuijl
      @jasperverkuijl  Před 2 lety

      I started at the age of 5, power meters where non existent. I raced BMX for 20 years, never used a power meter. First time i had a power meter was on the road bike.
      But when ik was 16 I did a test on a ergometer already peaking at 1800w
