  • Alright, today we are back in the glorious East Riding of Yorkshire, and after a little sideways diversion to a couple of villages on the Holderness Coast, we are back in the thick of it around Goole, to cover another couple of parishes linked to the River Ouse's inland port,. Speaking of ports, the one that we sort of half see in the Kilpin episode in in full view in this video!
That's because we are on the other side of the River Ouse here, on the peninsula that the mighty river bends it's way around before it flows through Goole and out into the Humber. This is a village that really couldn't have been what it is now without the Ouse in all fairness, thanks to its history with the building of ships!
If you take a walk around this parish, it won't take you all that long, it's not the country's largest by any stretch of the imagination, but there's more than enough in it to keep you entertained if you look hard enough. Take the thirteenth century church on the approach to the main crossroads on the road to Airmyn, which is linked heavily to a couple of previous East Riding videos, and it has some bits of historical interest, including a rare memorial board and a stained glass window that depicts an image that only one other place in the country has!
If you explore the churchyard, be sure to look for some cholera burials, and take some time to sit and enjoy both the Contemplation Garden and the views across the Ouse to Skelton and Howdendyke. To cap it all off, if you fancy leaving the village, why not have yourself a look at the amazing Ouse Bridge which is theoretically over the border into Airmyn parish, but much closer to this village than that.
It's a pretty little place, full of flowers and winner of Yorkshire in Bloom's Silver Gilt Award on two occasions, this is the charming peninsula that plays host to the parish of HOOK.

I was brought up in Hook. I have lovely memories of playing in the fields with my friends as a child. My granddad is buried in the cemetery there. And is named on the WW1 memorial in the village hall. My mum is 85 and was born in Hook as well. I’ll ask her about Mad Dog Lane for you. She’s got a fantastic memory for things like that.
