How much do I spend on Diesel? | Naburn Lock to York

  • To save you having to watch the video all the way through... I use (approximate guess) £320 of diesel in a year, to travel (again, approximately) 300+ miles each year and in winter I charge the batteries on average twice a week. My engine is a Lister ST2 and my boat is around 15 tonnes (another guess), 42ft long, 6'10" wide.
    Cruising filmed during April, additional footage June, all on an iPhone 6 edited using iMovie.
    If you have a boat you can use this handy calculator to work out how much you should be spending the next time you fill 'er up: www.notabarge.co.uk/projects/d...
    The HMRC guidelines I quoted are available to read on the RYA's website: www.rya.org.uk/knowledge-advic...
    Songs
    Greafer - "Letting Go" [main song]
    Mike Death - "Oh Yeah" [sexy shower scene music]
    Thanks for watching 8^)

    Great vid dude :) 60/40 for CC's and 40/60 for marina based boats seems somewhat of theme with boaters I know, regardless of diesel heater or not. Diesel running costs on a NB aren't too expensive anyway. Folks being folks there will always be those that choose to cheap out. Love the Adams family boat at 4.56 !

      Yeah, particularly if they were from far afield; it was - I don't want to say "proper" marina, because that's insulting to the canals - but it was a marina for seagoing yachts so there were a lot of transatlantic and European sailors who just assumed I was scamming them. And there were definitely some wrong'uns who were fairly liberal with their self-declarations!

    Hi Robbie. Great vids mate. I'm a continual cruiser and I used to do a 60 / 40 split until one boat yard told me to do 0% when buying red and keep my receipts from filling up with white diesel at a garage for my vehicle as red with tax is more expensive than white. Quite a lot of boaters do this but of course it only works if you have a diesel vehicle. On an other note , when are you gonna do the Staffs and Worcester and the Gloucester sharpness. some great boozers around there .

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  Před 7 lety +2

      Thanks Del! Interesting advice, no idea about that myself but generally it seems HMRC aren't that bothered as none of the boaters/boat yards/marinas I've talked to have said anyone has been investigated. S&W and G&S - not sure, but I expect that might be this autumn or next spring, will have to see. Cheers!

      That's why I make these videos Sylvia! I keep forgetting where I've been! Not sure about hours but I do remember being in Birmingham this time last year so we could say well over 300 miles with all the faffing around that comes with having a boat.

      @richH1625 Před 6 lety

      Thanks for asking Sylvia.
      But does that mean it's getting on for £1 per mile?
      (idk how many hours the "charging batteries twice a week" would amount to ..... 104 x n hours?)
      300miles ...100hours
      faffing .... ~100hours
      ?
      ~~~~~~~
      ! all rhetorical really, I've no plans to buy a boat but I do find it interesting.
    HAH! :-) .... you remind me of a Mate of mine....... Back in the late 60's/70's he had a rather nice Ford Anglia we all used to loaf around in ... Pub-Crawls, Coast etc, etc.
    At the start of 'every' journey he'd set his Trip-ometer and at the end of the evening/day/journey he'd calculate how many miles we'd done and divide it by how many of us in the car + a bit for 'Wear & Tear' (Usually his portion) ....... YEP!! :-)
    We'd all have to put the 'exact' amount into the kitty and then he was happy........
    (He's still a 'Tight-Arse' today .... A jolly nice bloke though ... So don't worry ;-)
    How do you have light on your boat, how do you have anything electrically powered.? At least two hours of running your engine each day is required to charge your batteries up, that's moving if you can, or just moored up. Anything over two hours you could split less than 100pc, but once a week you need to charge for eight hours, all domestic needs. You must move a lot to pay any duty, 20 hours minimum should be duty free per week.
    The "standard" split is 60propulsion/40heating, wether you have diesel heater or not, no questions asked - your ripping yourself off
    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  Před 7 lety +3
      To be honest I'd also been ripping the govt off too did you see? So it's nice to be back on level terms! Sticking to 60/40 since researching the video, no more no less.
    • @cjeam9199
      @cjeam9199 Před 5 lety
      You should make an accurate declaration of your split.
    £1.24 a f**king litre??? Diesel at a petrol station where I am is £1.14! My marina charges £0.79 and I reckon that's costly...
    • @argrundy
      @argrundy Před 7 lety
      Just to add... As I live aboard and don't travel much, I declare 10% for propulsion and the rest for heating (I have a diesel stove).
    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  Před 7 lety +1
      Yep so expensive hence why I made this video really! The part at 3:20 may be of interest if you have a mooring... You're welcome!
    I think you.ve been stiffed, hi priced diesel, logs and gas always claim 60 40
    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  Před 6 lety +2
      Well I overpaid it’s true but later in the video you’ll see I underpaid elsewhere so it all evens out!!
    Nothings fair for us tax payers, but check out your view from your window every day! Must be amazing!
  • @karl9460
    @karl9460 Před 7 lety
    You are never going to be "all propulsion" for the simple fact you are going to be charging batteries at least a little... and unless you get the spanners out and disconnect the alternator it will use some fuel... you damn fuel :)
    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  Před 7 lety
      I suppose you could argue that point, yeah cheers Karl 8^)
    Hang on, when did you make this video? You've just bought logs and I've just bought an air conditioner! Are you still using your log burner? Have you thought, if you need to save money you could chop up that barge pole!
    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  Před 7 lety
      Ha ha yes this was filmed in April, I'm just so far behind with my vlogs it's ridiculous. No I will not chop up my bargepole! Ha ha!
    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  Před 6 lety
      My point exactly - might pick some up soon nr Birmingham at 65p a litre (cheapest I’ve heard of).
    • @squirmsshed5343
      @squirmsshed5343 Před 6 lety
      its normaly half the price of the forecourt diesel price , its a shame a few of you cant get moored together , then you could all buy in bulk, if a truck could get near , they do it up here for their heating oil ,
  • @tomdallas1211
