God bless your sole

I love how they do all this work to make the set quiet just to make the actors' lines inaudible in the final edit.
Then clean you ears out lol
As has been repeated around the internet ad nauseam for years: the reason sound mixing is so bad in the home is because no one uses even basic 3.1 sound setups, instead relying on absolute SHIT TV speakers. The audio is mixed to be viewed in theater, no matter what the settings on the disc or the TV say, so if you're watching with only a stereo speaker setup on your TV you will miss the entire middle audio channel which includes voices.
TLDR; get even the cheapest, bare minimum 3.1 "Surround" sound setup and you'll forget this was an issue.
@@Cavemanner yeah but any system with a center speaker is super expensive and I've seen cheap TVs that have no optical audio out or even rca they just have a 3.5mm headphone jack with trash pass-through that's barely stereo and you're talking about center speakers as if they were the norm I don't even know anyone who has a setup like that.
@@ccllvn I apologize, I grew up middle class so everyone I know has at least a flat panel TV with audio out beyond stereo. Most of them are just lazy and ignorant and go their whole lives never bothering to investigate why their audio is so bad.
Yeah, if you're still rocking an older or very budget TV and only have stereo outputs then you really have no options beyond researching how to change some wiring yourself or finding a stereo setup that can emulate or boost the middle channel.
Edit: Just to add, though, that unless you are, and no judgment here, seriously poor or seriously third world, you can find used or even just decent budget 3.1 setups for very cheap. Lots of used PC 3.1 setups from the mid 00s to early 10s that are good quality and going for cheap on any flea market app.
@@Cavemanner I would argue that it shouldn't be up to the consumer to get the correct audio setup. If your movie has a stereo option, it should be mixed where it sounds good on stereo speakers. Stereo is the single most common setup, so you should probably make it sound good. You always have the other tracks to do the expanded audio version.
I know very few people who have more than a two speaker setup on their TV, even fewer on their PC, and none on their phones. If you don't accommodate them, then they'll just be more likely to watch something else.
“silence is necessary to record the actor’s dialogue”
the dialogue: “*oh yeah he was over there when*”
the music in the background: “WAWAWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHM”
Yup, I've been thinking the exact same thing.
every christopher nolan movie
The music is always way too loud in comparison to the dialogue. I put on cc because English is my second language anyways and I can set the TV to a level that doesn't hurt my eardrums when songs start
Yeah, something needs to be done about music. If i miss syllables through the music, you're doing it wrong (i have near perfect hearing. I can sometimes hear the wiring in walls.)
Actor? What actor? I only see a vaguely human-sized blob of shadow in the dark corner of the dimly lit room!
I would love these for everyday use, constantly freak people out when I sneak up behind them
That would be some detective work
Lol I have hardwood floors and hate to make noise when I walk and have adapted that walking style to every day life outside of the house and I've definitely scared more than a handful of people 😂 I get a lot of, "Oh my gosh how long have you been there?" and, "Where the heck did you come from?" It's not like I'm hard to spot, either - I'm a six foot woman for goodness sakes.
@@thesoutherncowgirlpoet plz tell how you do it, i hate to make noise when I'm walking and I'm also not hard to spot, I'm 5,9 almost 5,10
@@lildemon4140 Imma be honest, I don't even know. I think I put the ball of my foot down first. Or like the sides of my feet? I don't really walk on my heels.
I already do that without any shoes on.
I love how hard she steps without the footfoam then she's walking so light with the foot foam
What if it's the lack of sound making you think that
@@bagged_milk67 You can clearly see a difference in body language in both of the clips
I'm glad you said it cuz I was about to say the same thing she definitely stomped out and then tiptoed when the foam was on
@@bagged_milk67 if she genuinely walks that loud without the foam then she has a really heavy foot. I've always been really quiet when walking, habit from childhood, and I think because of that I'm more aware of loud walkers and damn there's a lot of them haha. The mic could be making them sound louder but with the way she's stepping it seems like they're intentionally loud steps.
Definitely
I need this for school. Because when your walking alone in the hallways you become very aware how loud your shoes actually are
Same bro
Thats why i like to make a lot of noise whem im walking. I've freaked some kids out while they were skipping class because they thought a teacher was approaching them
It’s kinda fun. I wear vans with flat soles so it sounds like boots or some fancy shoes and it reminds me of the movies when the bad guy is like walking down the empty hallway ya know.
I’m surprisingly silent for how big and heavy I am in school hall ways, although I gotta say my hearing ain’t the best
And… and then? Who cares about your shoes bro
In the same vein, Grand Moff Tarkin wasn't ever filmed below the knee because the actor Peter Crushing hated the boots and thought they were too tight and uncomfortable, so he wore slippers throughout filming
Came here to make this very comment as this immediately came to mind when watching this!😅
Actually pretty convenient because it would make him seem more in charge and villainous and a shot big enough to see his feet would make him feel smaller
No that's not true. He didn't hate boots. They gave him ones that were too small.
@@miketaylor00Not to be that guy but he said he hated THE boots (given to him), not all of them
Haha cool!
This would be so good for theatre too. Trying to get from one wing to the other quickly and quietly is such a pain at times lol

They're too busy running the blender on the floor.

Haha good one
Ah come on that’s a shoe in

I loved this footnote. It pairs well with the video

I remember in Starwars: A New Hope they had to remove Peter Cushing shoes because they hurt his feet, so we only get to see the upper half of him for the entire movie
George Lucas let him wear slippers, so Peter Cushing wasn’t barefoot throughout filming
This would be perfect for those trips at the middle of the night when your parents are sleeping
You wear shoes in the residence?
@@MarvinClarence they probably sayin that their feet themselves are loud at night, although I can’t imagine it’ll really help that much since everybody has better hearing at night and it’s also quieter
Bruh, if the teachers had these in school they'd be ninjas in the hallways.
not with the keys jingling
Had a teacher that was like 5’2” in my high school, she would disappear into the crowd
Not with them walkie talkies always making that **BOOOOP** Sound.
Fun Fact: Peter Cushing didn’t wear shoes for most of a New Hope because his shoes weren’t made in time. Originally he was given a smaller pair but they hurt his feet so much that he asked Lucas if he could go without them. Lucas allowed it and made sure to try and not have too many full body shots of him
Carrie fisher didn’t wear a bra in a new hope so there’s that fun fact too
He did wear something though, a pair of slippers.

So cool to see how the different departments work off one another to allow them to do their magic later. This both gives the on set sound people room for capturing clear dialogue as well as give the foley artists room for recreation of footsteps later on.
Sneaking to the kitchen to make myself a midnight snack just got a whole lot easier
Edit: holy fuck the amount of people who thought deep into this 😂

hmmm. random thought. We all know that high heels are pretty loud on floors. a friend of mine in highschool said that she would feel awkward during our veterans day assembly (which was always very somber and serious) when she walked up to the podium to read the names of soldiers that had come from our school, and her heels were clacking loudly across the gym floor. Anyway, would you be able to put a tiny piece of the shoe foam on the bottom of the heel to reduce that clacking from the heels? probably!
yes but it will make it that much more slippery walking around on the floor someone said in another comment
heels are overrated
I think a silicone pad glued with epoxy would be a more durable solution. Sand the surface and clean with alcohol before gluing.
Yes actually! I was a theatre kid for a while and needed to wear heals for a production, where the last thing you want is the sound of 20 teens wearing high heels to overpower the leads. So the director bought a foam to sick to the sole to dampen the sound
I'd be afraid that would make it easier to sprain an ankle
Man, the puns at the end of your videos always manage to heel me
Heheheh good one
Perfect, a way to silence my steps so I may sneak upon my enemies.
There’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in Star Trek: TNG where a shot of Picard walking into a room briefly shows the fact that he’s wearing some sort of slippers or running shoes rather than the “uniform” dress shoes. I had assumed that that was just for comfort but needing quiet for dialogue is probably another reason (if not the main reason).
Edit: it’s from Best of Both Worlds, Part I. It’s on CZcams here, watch the first moment of the shot carefully at the bottom of the door czcams.com/video/mFF94Nv0AVY/video.html
It was something about them not being able to get shoes in his size and him having to wear a size lower of shoe, so in the later episodes (because of the pain from the shoes being too small) he wore slippers instead.
I may be completely incorrect but I heard something about that
There’s also one of Bashir walking away in slippers when a few seconds earlier he was wearing the uniform’s black boots 😛
@@audeforcione-lambert4293 In "Star Trek: Lower Decks" the medical staff have white shoes as a reference to that error.

There are many of these small production fuck ups in TNG.
Love how she marches through without the foot foam and then tip toes in with the foot foam 😂😂😂
I could still hear her thighs rubbing together even though her steps were quieter.
Love how she stomped without the foam and tred lightly with foam lmao
I'm actually considering getting some of that because I hate how loud my high heels are
well these are meant for very clean floors, if you went outside with foam like that you'd pick up a lot of dust, dirt/sand etc. from the street
they are a pain to walk on, your chances to trip will increase by 100 with high heels
How are you going to get those soles on high heels lol
@@cybolic7967 Usually the same as any other shoe depending on the heel and cutting if necessary

I did BG for about 7 yrs And I’ve worn that several times. It is amazing how much difference it makes to the sound of your shoes.
i’m always really aware of anything on/in my shoes, the texture of the floor, my socks, etc. and the idea of having foam on the bottom of my shoes sounds INSUFFERABLE, so props to actors for putting up with it
This is all I could think after I saw how little surface area they covered. Would totally psyche me out in an acting situation.
i dont think this is a problem for most people
you probably have mild OCD or something like that
@@wojtekpolska1013 that doesn’t really sound obsessive nor compulsive, to me it sounds more like a sensory issue which is probably more related to autism or something. Or could just be someone who is particular about feet. Most likely not OCD though, unless their intrusive thoughts are all about their feet? lol
Yeah those poor souls. How the hell could they ever deal with a slight off kilter feeling in their feet while doing the easiest and highest paying job on earth... They should be getting at least an extra million for every step they have to take and I think it should come from our pockets. Fuck those starving kids and cancer research, celebrities in this world are spending 30 maybe even 45 minutes at a time with uncomfortable feet and I say it should end today!

This makes so much sense! I was wondering why these background actors were 2 centimeters taller.
Omg, I want these. Sometimes when I feel self conscious it doesn't matter how light I try to wall you'd thinks I was a tap dancing rhino.
Here's my wife without: *Literally stomps around like bigfoot*
Here's my wife WITH the foam: Takes steps light enough to walk across eggs without breaking.
Cool, so like... the secret is to walk slower and lighter? Ok so what use is the foam again? Does it have a message written on the bottom that reads "gullible"?
Was looking for this comment lmao
Yeah, they use these on professional sets because they're placebos, you're a fucking genius.
This isn’t a fucking conspiracy theory buddy like they use these on professional sets what’s your point
I saw this for the first time a few weeks ago working background on an Amazon show. The assistant director chastised the bg actor, but it was costume that gave her the shoes. It was pretty cool to see the quick fix though, and the AD redirected his irritation when I pointed out the error.
My classmate has shoes that have a small circle hole in the bottom because of how they are made..
He figured out that it's basically a suction cup if he walks a certain way...
He can make the iconic suction cup sounds with his shoes and the way he does it reminds me of how a penguin walks or how Penguin from the show Gotham on Netflix walks...
It makes so much noise when he does it though... Not even the foot foam will help if he walks like that to make the noise with his shoes...
The foam could probably keep the shoes from suctioning to the floor and making that sound. That’s amazing though, lol
