On a serious note, the throwing trick for moss/lichen placement is fantastic! Not sure how I can translate that to table-top gaming terrain, but I'll pitch some ideas.
So cool to see so much detail go into something that we so often never think about. It is pretty wild to think that every time we see a scene...someone or (a group of someones) had to place EVERY item in a room, add every scratch or place every stray item. SO COOL❤️
They're awesome. I watched them turn a modern house with linoleum sidig into a wooden house with wooden siding, all done with paint for the filming of "The Hurricane" with Denzel Washington. 😅
I worked in props for theater and i can confirm when you surround yourself with cool people you will have fun. And we had way less drama then the actors who were getting in some beef with the stage managers
Most floor sweep is made from sawdust that has been treated with oil so dust will bind to it. Guess it depends what kind of glue you're going to use but it may cause issues.
They needed you all on rock duty for Last of the Mohicans. I remember when my parents first pointed out the wobbcanvas rock. I was just a kid and couldn't believe the rocks were not all real.😂
This was a really gneiss video! Fake boulders are one of the first bits of movie magic I learned about, and I've always had a soft spot for them (ironic). I remember reading an American Girl book as a kid about a young lady in 1914 who loved the movies, and got to go with her uncle (a small-time actor) to the studio as a birthday present, and see how the sausage was made. She was exploring the prop room when her uncle told her to catch a boulder (which she realised as he threw it was made of cardboard). I haven't gotten to work on tv or film yet (I have done a bit of acting on local stages, and a bit of costuming too), but whenever I'm helping the prop and set people out, I love when I get to make fake walls, rocks, and terrain. My favourite one so far was cutting a hole in the stage, and applying sand, plaster, moss, and fake rocks around it to make a grave they could actually lower Ophelia into for a production of Hamlet!
You cut a hole in the stage?! I want to know more. My dance teacher once used a coca cola wash on a slippery stage for pointe shoes and was charged $1,000 for the cleanup. (no one fell during the performance at least).
Question: when your a prop master, are you primarily making props or is it a mixture of making and buying?? And would you have to organise everything like furniture as well??
Watching an episode of the original MacGyver series recently, I found a case where a custom-made rock didn't "perform" so well. There was a helicopter coming in for a landing in the background, and a rock in the foreground was shimmying a little bit in the breeze from the rotors.

Scenics are fantastic! I worked as a paint utility during my first production and was absolutely amazed by their talent.
