This show came out when I was 11 yrs old. I had 2 siblings and my parents were married. At about age 13 I couldn't figure out why my dad liked this show so much. As I got older I understood it.
As a kid I loved Ed O'neil's physical comedy. Al Bundy got hurt in the dumbest most hilarious ways, Ed was a riot portraying him. Rewatching MWC as an adult feels like It's watching it again for the first time 😂🤣

In real life Ed played his high school football at Ursuline, a well-known local football powerhouse in Youngstown, Ohio and then he tried out for the Steelers as a linebacker. He really was a good player. In college at YSU he was one of the Penguin's star players.
For some reason, I loved hearing the story about the big executive admitting to Ed that he was wrong about him. I don’t even know who that person is, but for someone as powerful as Ed said the guy was, it’s nice to know there’s people out there like that. I’ve never had a boss admit to their mistakes!

Bill Jacks, retired police officer in Imperial Beach, CA. With enduring catchphrases like "I got my eye on YOU!" and "Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ" that my wife and I STILL TO THIS DAY say to each other in random situations... well, IYKYK, as they say. P.S. for those going WTF? about now, Bill is a central character from John from Cincinnati. which was an HBO show that began airing right after the infamous "black screen" series finale of the Sopranos. Very few people watched it at the time, it was cancelled after just one 10 ep season... but it was created by David Milch (better known for NYPD Blue in the 90s and Deadwood earlier in the 00s), so if you like his stuff (especially his dialogue style), give it a shot, it's on HBO Max and again... only 10 eps, so it doesn't take long to watch it all. Highly recommended if you like quirky stuff (people compare it to Twin Peaks sometimes but you're not really going to find an Agent Cooper central character in it, so... don't go in expecting that aspect).

There was a little show called "Unhappily Ever After", it came close to MWC but then fell apart after they put too much attention to the daughter character
I never watched the show (Married With Children) back in the day for whatever reason but have watched a lot of the highlights and this guy was just incredible! They couldn't have picked a better guy to play the part.
"Married with Children" was hilarious in the '80s and '90s, but nowadays it's almost indescribably funny, because virtually every second of the show would never be made in today's Perpetually Offended climate. We haven't progressed, we've regressed. Ed O'Neill was beyond epic as the center of the show.

I love married with children, and when I was living in China, my partner was from the UK, and I started watching the show, and was trying to get him into it, and it is very cringeworthy; now, some parts are pure gold, as they are want to be, but the fat jokes, and some of the misogyny does not hold up. And I say this as a woman who wears a “no ma’am” T-shirt when she goes places.
Poor Ed O'Neill, he never gets his due recognition for his past musical accomplishments as lead singer of "Disco Express". Who can forget "Booty Time", a true classic!

It was a very Hawkeye Pierce type of character! Hawkeye was resigned to the fact he was stuck in 'that war', and many m, and about many of the key players he ran into. He made many sarcastic comments about it, but could also blow his top over it too! That balance is more human, more realistic.

I briefly met E.O. at a county fair back when the show was still on, where he was autographing pics. I told him the same thing, that his facial expressions were so funny. He just smiled and handed me his pic. He's pretty darn good on Modern Family, too.

I loved him in all three as well, though it's been a long time since I've seen Dutch and barely remember it. But mostly as Al Bundy. Married with Children was in my top 3 Fox shows in the early 90s along with Simpsons and Herman's Head.
However, to me there is a close-second fave character of his... Bill Jacks, retired police officer in Imperial Beach, CA.
With enduring catchphrases like "I got my eye on YOU!" and "Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ" that my wife and I STILL TO THIS DAY say to each other in random situations... well, IYKYK, as they say.
P.S. for those going WTF? about now, Bill is a central character from John from Cincinnati. which was an HBO show that began airing right after the infamous "black screen" series finale of the Sopranos. Very few people watched it at the time, it was cancelled after just one 10 ep season... but it was created by David Milch (better known for NYPD Blue in the 90s and Deadwood earlier in the 00s), so if you like his stuff (especially his dialogue style), give it a shot, it's on HBO Max and again... only 10 eps, so it doesn't take long to watch it all. Highly recommended if you like quirky stuff (people compare it to Twin Peaks sometimes but you're not really going to find an Agent Cooper central character in it, so... don't go in expecting that aspect).

I never watched the show (Married With Children) back in the day for whatever reason but have watched a lot of the highlights and this guy was just incredible! They couldn't have picked a better guy to play the part.

"Married with Children" was hilarious in the '80s and '90s, but nowadays it's almost indescribably funny, because virtually every second of the show would never be made in today's Perpetually Offended climate. We haven't progressed, we've regressed. Ed O'Neill was beyond epic as the center of the show.
I get it the woke mob is everywhere except it isnt. Married with children can still be watched. And rick and morty and south still go places married with children would never have dared to.
Of course you could still make it, it would probably just bomb lol, because the reality people like you don't want to face is that boomer jokes a la "the ol' battle axe at home" or "women be shopping, amirite?" or "fat people exist lmao" just aren't that clever or funny. I'd say the only sitcoms from the 90s I loved more than Married with Children were Newsradio and Seinfeld and that's about it.
So, I actually disagreed. I love married with children, and when I was living in China, my partner was from the UK, and I started watching the show, and was trying to get him into it, and it is very cringeworthy; now, some parts are pure gold, as they are want to be, but the fat jokes, and some of the misogyny does not hold up. And I say this as a woman who wears a “no ma’am” T-shirt when she goes places.

There's an Al Bundy in every guy. That side is us that doesn't want to give a crap, that takes it all in stride and just wants to watch Psycho Dad with our hand down our pants.
There's something refreshing about Al's story... usually Hollywood shows you that if you follow your dreams, you can achieve anything. But here's Al who dreamed of a pro football career and ended up selling shoes to support a very problematic family. Turns out a lot of Americans can identify with a guy who hates his life.

Rage, violence and anger aren’t good solutions. Just being realistic and resigned to life and rolling with the punches is the most healthy way to approach adversity. That doesn’t mean you don’t step in and help or be proactive, but sometimes you have to realize we don’t control some things
It was a very Hawkeye Pierce type of character! Hawkeye was resigned to the fact he was stuck in 'that war', and many m, and about many of the key players he ran into. He made many sarcastic comments about it, but could also blow his top over it too! That balance is more human, more realistic.

I briefly met E.O. at a county fair back when the show was still on, where he was autographing pics. I told him the same thing, that his facial expressions were so funny. He just smiled and handed me his pic. He's pretty darn good on Modern Family, too.
