  • hi i spend a lot of time making these small films of when the days were a lot different. most of the photos are from old books or old post cards. i love doing this to show you how life was way back then. some people can not buy books or find things to do with local history so this is why i have done this for all of you.
i do not do this to make money in any way, it is just for free so i do hope you all like the small films i do as it takes a long time to do. i did use to live in SW London but now moved to bucks where i find this is much better for me and my family.
all the best --- Jason Blackman.

Roehampton was once one of the loveliest villages on the outskirts of London. What a pitiable demise it has had: many of its great houses gone or built over with ugly council estates, a dual carriageway in the middle, and low-grade housing development everywhere. What was once an area famed for its clean air, next to Richmond Park, is now a soulless suburb.

I lived in Rodway Road from 1970 till 2000. My dad lived there till he passed away in 2022. I still miss the area.

It was so British and beautiful, knife crime, murders, robberies, and crime barely existed due to good christian values and harsh punishments, death penalty for murderers, fear works, look at now,its the normal.Medical care was poor, poverty was there, but neighbourhoods pulled together and knew each other, deffo better times.

Grew up here recently, moved in Roehampton in 2008 and moved out in 2018 to fly the nest, although my mum still lives there it’s crazy to see what it looked like 100-150 years ago, seemed like a beautiful environment to live in and I’ve understood much more regarding the culture of Roehampton and what some of the landmarks mean. Thanks for the video Jason, would love to know the source of these photos?

Brilliant and well done thankyou . Putney High Street isn't that much different from the later Victorian and Edwardian photographs and I guess that a number of photo's were taken from the top of the tower of St.Mary's Parish Church by Putney Bridge . One shot of the Upper Richmond Road shows a corner with large Victorian Buildings near the corner with Quill Lane . Those on the corner were lost in the Blitz , and part of that site stood empty for many years after the war .

Beautiful place, even the council houses are beautiful from a functional perspective; especially for the time. WW1&2 led to their construction, and the loss of some of our best men during those wars led to postmodernism and the social degeneration of those communities.

    The creeping tower blocks.
I remember a derelict brewery in Putney in the 60's.

Hello Jason, I am wondering if you have any information about the Putney family’s estate or property during the WW2 era? I haven’t found any information on it. Any help is much appreciated!

Hi Jason, thanks so much for sharing these - really wonderful. I'm the current Vicar of Roehampton (I think the house at 6.55 may be the old Vicarage, now long since demolished, alas!) and the Parish Church (e.g. at 2.25) is celebrating its 125th anniversary this Summer and we're planning a local history exhibition. First of all I'd love to play the Roehampton pictures on a loop. Second I wondered if you had any hi res images we could borrow? With thanks, Joshua Rey

What councils and governments have done to our once beautiful, elegant towns, cities and suburbs, is downright evil!!!! I go through Roehampton everyday. You scarcely see an indigenous person!! Its too heartbreaking!!
