Check out this video of the BEST 'before and after' style content I've made so far:
czcams.com/video/k2DWClcoHFI/video.html 🧡
Thanks for the video. As someone who has recently started to study graphic design, this is incredibly helpful!
I think the yellow in the title was awesome. It was a 70s aesthetic... things used to had colors like that. Idk, I am not a designer, but I guess design it is not only about those rules. I see tons of videos teaching hierarchy, typography etc but I see almost no one talking about culture, styles, decades.. Nice vid tho. 🌿
I do agree, I loved the colour. However it was kind too much in the same brightness to be easily readable. I would've liked it if he kept the yellow and changed it to a different shade though.
True! I love that yellow title. And the size of the title is fine if the cactus flower go above the title (It doesn’t matter if the main image is a little over the title, this is often seen on magazine covers.)
Pribably best to use a different object tho if yellow was to be selected as the title colour
Yeah I really liked it too.
Unfortunately it simply didn't work because there wasn't enough contrast. Perhaps it would've worked if the background was a darker color.
Yep, now it is boring. Maybe cleaner but forgetable
Hierarchy, color theory, typography are all basic principles of design.
Nicely explained 👍
Yes, you are right!
Please do make mooore videos like this! Once a week would be so nice 😁👍 Thanks!
I will try, if enough people want to see more content like this 👍
@@SatoriGraphics We definitely do!!
@@SatoriGraphics yes please make such videos 😍😍😍😍
@@SatoriGraphics Yes, please! That would be so usefull, educational and fun!
Learning from knowing what our mistakes are is much more insightful. Please do more videos like this.
I actually would have sent the “CACTI” text to the back of the flower, instead of shrinking the cactus. Makes me think of a magazine’s front cover.
I was thinking the same, having the flower over the lettering would have looked sick and really made it pop, especially over the original yellow
Same here
Same here
i like this format of video i feel like i'm watching dora the explorer/blue's clues but for designers
Nailed my sentiments exactly. So fun!
But less annoying
Me too! So fun!
I've grown so much as a graphic designer because of you man
That's exactly what I like to see 👌
are you a proffessional ?
We want this kind of video Again. 🥰
If enough people watch and like it then yeah I will for sure 👍
@@SatoriGraphics And increase the challenge for at least one of the designs like the last one in this segment. It was well made, to say the least. If you put up an advanced course someday, I will sign right up!
D2: I actually would have preferred the cactus top overlaying the Title
D3: I actually liked it with the left side being empty
To add to the cacti, I would remove the rule lines, as the first one on the left is separated by the crest. The bottom text could be either center to match the title or align left.
Over all it was nice to watch the improvements of all the projects. Merci!
This was also my idea, to move flower over text and it would partially deal with space issues. I also agree that asymmetric layout on page was more interesting
I agree with design 2, it would've been more dynamic if the catus overlapped the title.
This whole video is just bonkers. The "Cactus" poster has so many issues - like the font of "descriptions" is too small for any size of the poster, the badge should probably overlap the "cactus picture", the biggest contrast is on the least interesting part of the poster - flowerpot which takes up 50% of the format (WTF), the webpage doesn't make any sense, because of the stupid hierarchy. Is the picture a picture of a current dish? Or a new Arrival? Why is "new arrivel" higher in hierrarchy than a personal choice of a customer? The minor "basic" issues like aligning business card to "mathematical" middle instead of an optical are a classic beginner issues. Not to mention the lack of understanding how divs work. These videos might help to probably absolute greenhorns but can be harmful to people who are actually serious about studying graphic design.
Quite agree
I've been a designer for about 20 years. I'm always fascinated seeing other designers choices. I agree with some, would do some things differently but it's always eye opening. Thanks for the great content.
it's a good lesson for beginners but the "mistakes" you said that mostly different preferences for different designers. for instance cacti headline for the magazine cover is totally your preference that you picked white but yellow also looks nice if you're not blind you still can read it. sometimes using opposite colors is a way to create high contrast. I think you can't say wrong or right to these type of design choices. I hope it make sense what I mean.
I absolutely missed the smaller text in the cactus poster as I was so focused on how the beautiful flower was ever so slightly behind the headline.
Let her shine, she is the focal point. And she deserves to proudly block the headline as much as she wishes to.
🌵👀
exactly that I was also thinking of!!
Actually, I thought there was a bit of a tangent with the text and the top of the cactus flower.
Please make more content like this! I've learned so much in these past 8 minutes and you presented it in a way that challenges me to think and use my current knowledge. :) I hope in a few more weeks I will be able to get them all right!
I have long been looking for this kind of content on YT, can't find one except for The Futur series of Typography and Design Critiques. Now Satori is making it, I hope for this to have series too. There are tons of information people can read on google explaining the Principle of Designs. However, we learn better by actually seeing how it is done. This content is the perfect example.
Check out Zimri Mayfield. He has tons of great logo critiques
I really love these types of videos! They make viewers interact and refine their sense and vision through practical examples. They feel like guided exercises, keep it up!
There's a video like this coming out tomorrow (Monday)
I learn far more from these videos than "how to" videos. I missed something on every one of your fixes, which means I learned something on every one. More more more, please!
I thought the same too! This type of video is make me critical thinking! 😂
I've liked the yellow title in the poster, looked different and unsettling
Then the yellow need to have less lightness value to create the contrast that is required.
@@ngeejee The cool part about knowing the rules is braking then
I thought I was the only who thought the yellow looked better.
The white was high fashion generic.
I like the yellow as well. I do think the shade of yellow need some adjustment to pop a little more. The alignment thing I agree with though.
I found the yellow really hard to look at. I think bright yellow is one of those colors that reads much differently depending on your vision.
I actually loved the yellow "Cacti" title :(
Amira Foad
Yuk. Watch again, when the logo goes to white suddenly the pink flower of the cactus really pops. The yellow heading and the flower were visually competing. Have another look.
I did not like the White. It looked boring. Yellow was better
@@gevorkbabayan then you just say "fuck the readability"
@@smoukss yellow looks better, reads better, feels better. by your logic every line of text should be white because it is more readable. yellow is very readable
@@gevorkbabayan It was a nice yellow but the value was too close to the mint green. I'm surprised he didn't put it into greyscale to show how similar the values were
been watching lots of your stuff lately and what I love about these videos is that I can instantly feel how my eyes relax when looking at the improved version
More videos like this one would be amazing! I've seen the topics of graphic design principles, Gestalt principles and the such many many times in different courses, but I find that I learn the most when they are explained through exampels and reworks like these, so you get an actual real practical use of them! So keep them coming please!
I only missed one thing and that's the thickness of the logo on the last sample. This video made me feel that I actually have learned something through the years of struggling. I love this video so much. Thank you, now I'll go back to my computer and cry while working because for once I am actually proud of myself.
Hey Danielle, I'm sure you probably are a lot better at design than you give yourself credit for. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy 👍
I wondered if a red square at the centre of the design might really attract the eye. But graphic design is all about taste and judgement and it might have been too much.
Me guessing all the answers correctly realizing I have taught myself a lot more about design than I thought I knew 0.o
Love this type of video!! As a student, this was a great test of my knowledge. I know most of the issues but not all. And the ones I didn’t know were great learning experiences. I really appreciate this content
I've been out of college for 2 years, this was a good refresher
That cactus placement in the center is killing me 💔😱
The only thing I'd like different is the word "solutions". I feel it should have the full width of the logo. This would be in line with the robust block idea.
I totally agree. I liked the smaller font size on the word solutions but it felt out of place when it wasn’t the same width as the rest of the logo
i never studied design but i end up having to do design type work for my job now and then. i am more used to making visuals for art’s sake rather than professional purposes, so watching this video has given me a better idea of what looks professional, as well as what to do when i run into certain problems or things just feel off. im definitely subscribing
More of this please! I’m self teaching myself some basic graphic design and Sometimes things don’t look right and I can’t put my finger on it so this helps so much
Interesting format... extremely helpful too.
Would love to have a series this (As frequently as possible haha).
More to come :D
@@SatoriGraphics yes please 😆
This video style's pretty fun and interactive, I like it
That's nice to know, thanks for your comment!
please make more of these, they are super helpful and great for testing yourself and trying to implement design principles in real examples...and it's fun to do!
Bloody awesome! I love practical critique to show you how/where designs can be improved. Please post more of these on a regular basis - even critiquing viewers designers would be brilliant! Thank you.
OMG I'm literally so proud of me right now. Got all of the points right! :D
Good going Sebastian 👍
Me too c:
I want more videos like this. Thank you ❤️
More to come!
Previously I was judging my graphic knowledge but after watching this video I am feeling very confident and I could find 90% of mistakes.
Sure sir!
Make videos like this!
I got them all, and I must say some of it is because I’ve been watching your videos for a couple years now. Thanks a lot man, much appreciated.
hey that's awesome to hear man, thanks
Love these videos. Make me feel like I'm not crazy lolll.
Glad you like them.. not crazy lol
me getting every problem right without even being a graphic designer, i'll take that as a win 😂
That is a big win, kudos to the ice cream 👍
content game is on point bro. these are so quick and easy to digest. keep these up, the scope is crazy.
More to come!
Thank you for this video Satori! So informative and now I have learn something new in graphic design!
Square solutions: Everything was the same width so it looks like a slab, having the text and icon the same width drives me up the wall.
yeah good points with that one, thanks
You inspire me a lot
that's really awesome to know :)
Loved this style of video 🔥 I couldn't find the issue with the designs before you did, so I could really tell the difference between your trained artistic eye and my amateur one. Really helpful in showing me what design aspects I need to be aware of more 👍
This was such a well-explained, quick reminder of design principles. A nice refresher even for a professional designer -- and a great way to phrase these principles for clients! I hope you keep making more of these.
great content, but on the first one i also think the printability of the scaled down mosaic is pretty bad
You're not wrong 👍
I think all of this was personal preference except for the alignment issue.
umm not rly
I love this!! I learn alot from them, and they are short videos that makes it alot more watchable :)
Really enjoyed this video! I paused and thought about what I would change before going on and hearing your solutions :)
Are we not going to address the fact that the first Square Solutions logo was not a square? to me that's even worse than everything else
That’s all I could see it was driving me crazy
"yellow doesn't pop, blends into the background"
*changes to lighter shade of bg color
???
I think it was because the yellow was too close in value to the background. You can create contrast with using different values and/or hues. (For example, a more transparent blue will show up on an opaque blue better than a dark green will show up on a dark blue). One way to check it is to make it gray scale -- things of the same value will be the same shade of gray. I'm not a graphic designer, but I watercolor and the same concept applies. If one of my paintings appears flat instead of having depth, I take a photo in black and white to see if I'm lacking contrast.
This is extremely helpful. Thank you for giving some time for me to think about what could be wrong before you point it out. It gives me a chance to really think about it before seeing what's the actual issue. Love your videos!
Yes, I love this style of video. It's like a quiz, and very satisfying when I can guess the answers right
Satori you bastardddd!!!!!🤧🤧🤧 You had me in the first half of the square solutions design.... I was so sure the first version was perfect and when you did the other two versions I was like "ohhh snap! It does look wayyy better! Why didn't I think of that"... This video was really insightful. Thanks Satori ♥
I love this kind of videos, before and after, its more easy to understand. Thank you!
I got the magical power to change any according to Design Principles. Really helped me.
Love this video!! I got almost all of the mistakes correct!! 😊 I pause the video before the explanation and try to guess myself
because of you,Im going to own my own business,Like srsly, my friend used to teach me graphics designing for a while and after a while he gaved up,which was last year, I recently found your videos and Ive been watching all of them and following your work, and tbh Im recreating posters very well,I can send you a few ,I actually showed my friend the designs and he said it actually looks professional ,all thanks to you,so thank you
That's really awesome to know and hope you keep going man
I really dig this style of video! It feels like I’m in a class without the need to leave home. Haha. Your questions were engaging and really forced me to think and use my previously gained knowledge to think critically about what could be improved upon! Great job! Cheers to many more helpful content! 🍻🙌🏽😄
This is incredibly helpful for a newbie. I know my theory but this step into practical application, with your guidance allows me to see how they are applied.
I just fell in love with your channel! Your doing an amazing job keep going!
The way you do it is amazing. Since I have to think first, before you say what’s wrong I memorize it a lot better. Thanks!
Love the format and figuring out the solution before it's revealed. Great job!
Another video coming tomorrow like this one 👍
Great pointers - always good to keep vigilant when designing! A few points that popped into my head;
Design #1
- The email line was out of alignment in the original design
- Hierarchy as you mentioned (or at least differentiation)
Design #2
- Weak contrast for white text (white header looks great though)
- consider keeping original image size and masking it to overlay title text instead of shrinking
Design #3
- I would probably make button colours consistent (unless green buttons consistently direct to the cart whilst white buttons navigate elsewhere across the site)
- updated design looks great from a static viewpoint, but it's important that it responds effectively to smaller screen sizes (in which case the text sections would almost certainly need to stack)
Design #4
- agreed!
Great content.
Yes definitely more videos like this reminds me of the quiz videos u used to do, not only is it a good review but it helps it knowing what I need to focus on learning more about
haha yeah the quiz videos, I remember those :P
Thanks man and enjoy your day
Love these types of videos. Let's me get to a vulnerable place and learn. As a Production Artist, I don't actually design much. For example, it's not my job to make the logo, but to make sure it fits in the layout I'm re-working for whatever formats are on the request. So, the same principles apply.
Cheers, man! Thanks =D
Yeah this kind of video contents is very useful to learners. It helps to understand better your previous videos on principles of design.
Thank you so much for this,All the Fundamentals of Design are Noticed🔥
I wish you can post more content like this one! Watching you amend the design can learn a lot
LOVED THIS.... I HAVE BEEN LEARNING STUFF FOR MONTHS NOW AND I LOVED HOW MY KNOWLEDGE WAD PUT TO TEST! I ace it in 3/4... And that ain't bad for me.. I am happy... This encouraged me... So please do keep making more videos like this! ❤️😭
Thanks for your comment and you can check my playlist on my channel homepage dedicated to before and after videos
I LOVE THESE TYPE OF VIDEOS...VERY INSIGHTFUL YET SIMPLE.
Love this content! It reminds me of critique time in college. So important! Awesome!
It really is!
So happy, please do make more. Now I feel like a professional designer. Had the same ideas as yours except thekind of
Sorry about the voice but the more you give examples while while explaining (lovely accent), the more educative and informative it is. Thanks for this, pls don't stop. Now a subscriber.
As a self taught groahic deisgner I csnt tell u how useful this is to help me train my eye! Thank uu
Happy to help!
It’s fund trying to work out the issues before you get to them. Learned a few things too. Thanks!
So glad I tripped along and found your channel. I'm going to learn a lot from your cool videos. Much appreciated.
Welcome aboard! There are many videos just like this one on my channel homepage 👍
This type of video, very useful it learn how to master with examples
This kind of videos are 10x more helpful because they enforce thinking.
Thanks man, and you can find an entire series of them on my homepage
This is so very interesting. Make more of this kind of videos.
This was awesome informative. I was trying to answer along and got some of them right too!
Enjoyed and learned! Thank u.
I'm a civil engineer, but I love watching these videos just for fun. Except for the landing page I was able to spot most of the needed changes just from what I've learned on this channel.
This kind of video is GREAT! So nice to see the design principles in action :D
On the Square Solutions logo, I would also flip the logomark left to right because the 4-5 vertical lines lead my eye to the end of the word "Square", and it would be so much more satisfying for the viewer's eye to be lead to the beginning of the word. Great breakdown overall!
Do more of these! I just knew my mistakes and my view points where i was wrong!
wow your videos are the best of all the graphic design videos that I have seen - thank you so much!
This is awesome. Principles of design seems forgettable nowadays. I appreciate this. Keep it up, Tom!
Man, this is so fun and helpful at the same time. Hope you make another one.😃
Oh yeah, this is very good to test ourselves as well.
I'd like to see more of it, thank you!
Graphic design major here. This popped up in recommends, and it's a good exercise!
Here is what I learned again with your videos:
Hierarchy
Content alignment
Use of colors in relation to the background
good use of space (not too big nor too small)
not too much font
and balance the content
THANK YOU !
You teach people well! This is same teachings like I had on my aplied arts studies.
Love this! Im not a graphic designer just watch random design videos. For the food one I actually kept thinking maybe flipping the image but then you showed the solutions and I was all :O. Thanks!
That's really interesting to know, thanks for the comment :D
This is slowly becoming my favourite CZcams channel. Keep it up!
that's really neat to know, thanks man!
Once again, amazing teaching style. It's very useful and thanks to you I could get some basics about design without too much struggling.
Thanks a lot bro
Thank you so much for these videos! They're so helpful :)
I love these types of videos it's so useful to beginners.
Thank you bro❤
Awesome vid! I just got hired as a Junior designer and it always helps to get a refresher. Look forward to more of these type of videos!

More to come, no worries lol
Your video is so professional and very useful to learn and understand graphic designes. Make more like this. Thank you so much ❤️.
