You can tell that book Tom read was probably the first volume of magic recorded.. Immortality is the greatest cheat of nature. The ultimate practice of magic And something as extraordinary as a horcrux sounds like a magically induced accident. A one shot lucky spell. It makes sense that nobody knew what a horcrux was until Tom because its a method of achieving something your not supposed to...

Anyone else feel just little bit bad for Slughorn? He, like so many others, sees so much potential in Tom and he desperately wants to believe his student isn't going down a dark path. Slughorn obviously feels immense guilt over providing Tom with this information, quite possibly believing he is the reason Voldemort became so powerful and practically unkillable (this is somewhat vain of Slughorn, as I have no doubt Tom would've found the answers he was looking for eventually regardless of what Slughorn did or didn't tell him). I don't blame him for trying to hide this memory from Dumbledore. Slughorn had his flaws, but he wasn't a bad man and he really did want to see his students succeed.

@@christofferhoff6669 Thats so true. The Voldemort we know later was directed by anger, impatience and sometimes stupidity. Sure, he was so powerful ... but he didnt had anything from his original character later. Imo. This character we saw here in Tom Riddle was more like the character of Grindelwald imo. A skillet manipulator.

Dillane’s portrayal is pure genius and really managed to send a chill down your spine. This scene is the defining moment of the unbecoming of Tom Riddle, and the becoming of Voldermort. Paired with such vulnerability of Slughorn upon merely hearing the question. Such a pivotal moment played so well. I never get tired watching this scene. He certainly woud have made Chamber of Secrets feel darker.

    Tom Riddle:
I was in the library the other day, in the Restricted Section, and I read something rather odd about a sith lord. It's called, as I understand it... Darth Plagueis.
    Horace Slughorn:
    I beg your pardon?
    Tom Riddle:
Darth Plagueis. I came across the term while reading and I didn't fully understand it.
    Horace Slughorn:
I'm not sure what you were reading, Tom, but this is very dark stuff. Very dark indeed.
    Tom Riddle:
Which is why I came to you.
    Horace Slughorn:
It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith so powerful and so wise, he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create... life. He had such a knowledge of the Dark Side, he could even keep the ones he cared about... from dying.
    Tom Riddle:
But I don't understand how that works, Sir.
    Horace Slughorn:
The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
    Tom Riddle:
    What happened to him?
    Horace Slughorn:
He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power...which, eventually of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death... but not himself.
    Tom Riddle:
Is it possible to learn this power?
    Horace Slughorn:
Not from a Jedi... This is all hypothetical, isn't it, Tom? All academic?
    Tom Riddle:
Of course, sir. It'll be our little secret.

Voldemort is always portrayed as being incredibly smart and intellignet, but not actually very wise and prone to be rather short-sighted. Let's just get into the horrocrux part, if you sever your soul, you are damaging your own being, is like Peter Pettigrew mutilating himself just to live another day, except this one is more spiritually. It greatly indeed affected his mind, but as a whole I mostly think it just made him all around worse, he never pondered the concequences of mutilating his soul, what if he still dies? what if people find out about his horrocruxes? What's more, would you rather spend your time living in the mortal world forever while getting frailer and frailer overtime?
Voldemort was never wise, he was clever but his use of his smarts were always short sighted, his mind degeneration was more a foregone conclusion after the mask finallly breaks actually.
