I’m with you Sean! I’m ALL about the kimchi..I literally choose restaurants by their kimchi🥰
Your expression when tasting the kimchee is priceless. Your comments are spot on. If a restaurant has kimchee with great flavor and spice, I will usually purchase some to dine later at home.
Oh I'm so glad you validated what I've been saying. Too many different brands have a vinegar taste to them. I'm not Korean but love the food. Take care of yourself and your family. Hope you find some good stuff.
Heck, I may not be Korean, but I respect the culture and food and I'll brave the journey of making kimchi from scratch. It's kinda terrifying to see and hear America trying to bank in on a food that's so well loved by it's original people and those who're curious about it.
Hey glad your closer to Fam in the USA now ✌️❄️🙏🧏♀️💜👋
BTW…Netflix is airing “A Nation of Kimchi” on 9/10 if no one has posted it yet.
It's time to get out the vats and buy cabbage to make your own!!!
this video made me think i would love to hear more from you about korean/traditional cultural foods if that so interests you! even you talking about this sus kimchi (lol i love) was so informative and interesting
We're going to need an HMart Kimchi review of all the different brands from you now 😉
There is kimchi in frig from Costco. They report on X concerning Jin and Hobi’s daily menu and I am impressed by the many different kinds of Kimchi they serve in the Korean military.
If you find a good manufacturer of it in the states please let us know, they will be supported.
That made me chuckle, thank you! Looking forward to seeing the next instalment of your epic journey to find a sustainable source of good kimchi in Cali.
You're always entertaining Sean. Maybe you could do a video of yourself with your family making Kimchi like it should be made !! I would love to see that
Love when you do food videos. You’re so honest and tell it like it is. Would like to see what your thoughts on good kimchi in the supermarkets are.
There's a show on Netflix about Kimchi. I watch it salivating. I'm laughing so hard at your review.
Great topic! Thanks for the info - you’re doing a good public service. 😄
No H Mart? Here in Houston the H Marts have so many types -- my bestie tells me it's pretty spot on... oh I think the issue is you need to get the fresh stuff made by Korean ladies at the store -- not in the jar?
My husband said go to Costco. They have Kimchi that's made in Korea.
Am happy to see and hear from you, 🎉🎉
Unrelated but back in the day you used to talk about skincare products you like. Now that you're back in the states you probably have realized we are relying more heavily on Amazon here -- any tips on how you are keeping up your skincare here in the states? Yes, I am using your LED mask -- matter of fact I have 2 masks and 2 for the eye area -- but some of us are still kind of addicted to our potions and lotions so to speak (essences etc). Well, thought I would ask. So good to see you back...
Sean, I very much enjoyed your indignant search for kimchi rant 😂❤️
My trip to South Korea in 2016 ruined me because I now know what kimchi should taste like.
I’m back home in Western Australia and have the same issues trying to find good kimchi.
Your rant has made me decide to start making my own. I’m going to practice til I perfect my own kimchi.
Thanks for the push, your videos always make me think xxx
Sean, thank you so much for making me laugh- had a couple of rough days lately but this video made me giggle so much!! In Melbourne (Aus) we have amazing Asian grocery places- we are spoilt for choice- so don't have issues getting good authentic SK products- including Kimchi. But still want to have a go of making my own (a small batch) 💜
So I live in the middle of nowhere Illinois and my grocery store (I’m actually a cashier there) only has 1 type of kimchi and that’s the only kimchi around for like at least an hour drive or more, I’ve tried kimchi a lot of places in my travels as well as where I used to live in the Chicago suburbs, I definitely miss Korean food all the time. Our all encompassing “Asian food” section is literally just one shelving unit.
Well, I’ve tried a few kinds of Kimchi and wasn’t a real fan of them until I had some with my beef ramen at Hmart. It was completely different than the other ones I tried. I liked it! It was soft and crunchy with a fresh taste but also blended flavors….Iol this made sense in my head. I think I may try to make some and see what happens
Thank you for this. This was so educational. Could you do a series reviewing Kimchi?
I personally love kimchi but the last couple of times I bought it,it tasted like mold and I threw it out. Then I started trying different recipes and found I preferred the one that Maangchi makes so I use it and since I like very spicy food. I use a lot of the korean red pepper flakes. I found in the long run its cheaper to make my own and the flavor is amazing
I’m lucky. I live in south Mississippi and they make kimchi at our local Chinese grocery store. The owner may be Chinese but she knows how to make really tasty kimchi and pickled radish 😋🤤
I found mine on Amazon Fresh $8.99. I keep it in the frig.
I really enjoy your videos, thanks for the information ❤
I’m excited to be traveling to S Korea to try authentic Kimchi! We Americanize authentic cuisines to meet the palette of the majority at the minority’s expense. And even in traditional African American cuisine here in the US. There are very few places in the country that can make Soul food (not Southern food, but Soul food) the way our people make it. The seasonings aren’t right and the ingredients are questionable. I mean, who puts raisins in potato salad and breadcrumbs on Mac & Cheese? It’s definitely not like our ancestors used to make Soul food back in the day. I will say, however, I have had some fried chicken that was off the chain at a Chinese restaurant recently!!! IJS 😂
I had kimchi from a Bonchon in Connecticut a week ago and I definitely tasted jalapeno, which was the first time I ever noticed that flavor in kimchi. Btw, loved your facial expressions while you tasted the kimchi! 😂
Houston H Mart has a local brand that I get, it tastes pretty good.
Similar to the ones I get at the Korean’s restaurant. Now you have me wondering if it’s the real deal that I been eating .😂🤔
Is it Kong Ju food Inc? I'm also seized with the fear that I've been buying the wrong thing 😂
@@haveialigned Yes, it’s Kong Ju brand. Sean needs to do a taste test for us to see if we been eating the good stuff. 😁
@@bonnechance2958 it tastes good to me but what do I know 🫣
Oh no, I bought some kim chi, but now I won’t know if it tastes right or not. I didn’t know it’s usually very spicy; I’ve never eaten it before. I live near some Korean markets (I’m told. I only see Vietnamese everything there). It seems a losing battle if it’s supposed to be hot. I’m not supposed to eat hot for health reasons. I never go to shops because I’m terminally shy
Hello Sean,, so glad to see you again,,I am a kimchi lover and I am a Filipino, and I get my Kimchi from any Asian store,I love the daikon radish kimchi.!!
What a coincidence, I just bought cabbage and green onions 2 hours ago, I'm making kimchi today. K-dramas got me curious and I fell in love with the taste and texture of kimchi. 😊
I live in the biggest city of Brazil so I can find it easily at asian markets but it is not cheap so I've been making it at home once every 2 months. I did buy it once though, it was very delicious.
Sean, the only kimchi I've liked has been made in-house at California restaurants, both in LA and SF. Tried the H Mart deli kimchi once and was unimpressed, but I'm a white American. My palate is not properly educated on kimchi. I'm going to Korea for a few weeks next year, which should help, but if you can find real kimchi in California, ya gotta tell us where, Bruh!!
I've seen that brand in stores up here in Toronto Canada.
Loved this review.
Your face said it all when you took a bit.
Wonder what Kimchi brand they use in Korean Restaurants?
I've had some vinegary-tasting kimchi that made me think I didn't like it, but I've had other kimchi that was delicious. I loved the kimchi fried rice from a restaurant called "BBQ Chicken." Some frozen kimchi dumplings were also good - tasty,
Popular brands in Malaysia is Jongga and CJ Bibigo, we also have locally made ones. My go to brand is Jongga.
I got hooked on Jongga Kimchi after buying one of their cup ramen with kimchi. I’ve tried other brands but always cycle back to Jongga. Hopefully one day I can visit Korea and have Kimchi.
Glad to hear your critique on kimchi. You are a expert an what is should taste like. I just started eating it last year when I tried it from a Korean restaurant and it was delicious. When I buy it from the grocery store I get the Nasoya brand, spicy. It taste good to me. I guess it’s only fake imitation kimchi and I enjoy it because I don’t know any better 🤷🏽♀️😢
I went to a Korean restaurant with my friend two years ago and I tried kimchi for the first time. And let’s just say, I’ll wait til I visit SK to try REAL kimchi to give you my final verdict. I can’t handle spicy stuff too well, but I know you can request for mild kimchi. The one I got was mild and I could tell, but I think they put TOO MUCH vinegar and it took over my food palette for the rest of the meal. Also I tried their mochi and ummm yeah I wasn’t a fan. So I’ll go to SK and see the real difference by then lol 😅
I’m not a kimchi eater, but my hubs frequently buys the one at Costco. I hate to ask, but have you tried it and is that acceptable? It says Product of Korea, but is distributed by a company in NJ.
Maybe the owner of the company should spend some money and send a rep to south korean for a taste tester 😮
Thank you so much for making me laugh so much. I used to live in SoCal can appreciate some of your geographic comments. Trying to find true flavored ethnic food can be a huge challenge. Have fun. 😂😁❤️
Completely agree. I wish I could make my own💜 Are you not reporting on BTS anymore? Love your podcasts
🤢 Your reaction to the jarred kimchi 😂
I am only half Korean, but I was born in Korea and grew up on kimchi. I never really found any in the states that I liked. I always had to make my own. I live in Spain now and getting ingredients is a challenge sometimes but I make do. I have to buy spices from Amazon so sometimes it’s hit and miss. Most people do not like spicy food. I have a couple of friends that do love kimchi though.
Nono. Where does it say this kimchi was made on the back of the jar? It will say it all. If Latin America has anything to do with it, the flavor will go wrong. I went to a McDonslds and got an ice tea, but this new Latin lady made it out of coffee and it was horrid. I took it back.
I'm allergic to "regular kimchi" but can eat white kimchi. Wondering if you have any recommendations for this type. Thanks!
Why isn't your Mom making your Kimchi? You can make it! It is not as hard to make as you may think.
I would like to buy more Kimchi here in Germany, cause I like to put it in my rice, but its only sold in such small quantities (tiny cans) or big bags for horrendous prices...even in the "Asian store". Its imported from SK, so I guess its not some knock off version...but my wallet isnt in the mood for it, even when my stomach is. And Jesus Christ, thats a medium sized Jar in America??? What does the big version look like? Like a Water dispenser tank?
That's a very large jar in America he was kidding
@@haveialigned OH 😅...it wasnt hard to believe though.
Edit: He wasnt joking.
If anyone can point me to a good kimchi brand to buy in London, I'd be grateful. I buy kimchi from rhe two Korean shops in central London but have no clue how authentic those purchases are.
I like anything pickled but while I know what sauercraut is supposed to taste like I am not so sure about kimchi.
김치찌개 소개해 줘서 고마워요
I never tried kimchi, maybe it's geared more towards Americans, or others that don't know the difference lol
Curious what you think of daikon or radish kimchi. I like it better than cabbage as the kimchi I get at my local Korean grocery tends to be quite spicy so for me is mostly an add to noodle soups. P.S, where I am a jar of kimchi the size of the one you didn't like would be around 24 dollars so maybe my quality is better though maybe I am just getting fleeced..
Unfortunately, you can't always (or ever?) get foods that are true to their culture in the States. I thought I was eating Mexican food in WDC restaurants... until I visited my dad in Mexico! MUCH less salt so, just bc of that, much healthier. Other differences, too!
As for Gimchi, I am SO DONE with most of what is passing for Gimchi. I try to eat it anyway, out of desperation...BUT, there's a Noona named MAANGCHI, who has posted recipes for various types of Gimchi and, even though it's seriously difficult to get ALL the ingredients (and I don't know which brands are preferable at H-Mart), I am determined! I've eaten gimchi that was acceptable to my yeo dongsaeng, but she went back home, so I can't ask her opinion, now. 😢
I wish us all success in finding authentic-tasting Gimchi! ...and thank you for posting this information, Sean-ssi.
Im Korean living in NE because every kimchee here has fish sauce in it i have been making my own for last 10 yrs all i use is fresh garlic sugar and salt i love it 😅❤btw not a vegan just feel Raw seafood mixed with vegetables is not to ky liking
I am looking for the green onion kimchi. If anyone has a brand recommendation let me know.
hello gosh have'nt seen u in along time
If you find it please tell me!
I have never eaten Kimchi or even seen it except in Korean movies. It looks like something I would like. I think it is probably better fresh like a couple of days or so old? I think crunchy and hot tomatoes tasting Korean spice would suit my palate best, although I don’t think tomatoes are used at all? Maybe the taste one is striving for? I would love to taste a really homemade batch from Korea! I guess I will have to go there? Sean let us know what you find as I have a son in Los Angeles who could ship me some if it is worth it?
한국에 관한 거라 영어듣기가 매우 듣기 쉬워서 정말 좋아요
I wanna buy it just to see how nasty it is lmao
What do you think about COSTCO’s kimchi?
Kimchiiii Jimin's favorite food ( especially his mother's he said ) So yeah Korea it's the right place to eat Kimchi as Greece 🇬🇷 is the best place to eat Greek food ( and our famous mousaka ha😂😂) I've missed you Sean nice to see you ❤❤🎉🎉Love from Greece 🇬🇷 ❤(ps my son is obsessed with Korean and Japanese snacks, I had some delivered from Korean site😊)
What?! 😂
Once I bought it and I had to throw it 😳 so I made it myself it’s much better but next time I will not add garlic it’s over powering the flavor 😊😊
Stephanie Soo (popular Korean American CZcamsr and Mukbanger) loves the brand Mother-in-Law's kimchi. I've never tried it but I trust her judgment.
Not a kimchi pro, not Korean, but Russian with a genuine love for fermented food. 2 favorite ones out of the long list that I’ve tried - Trader Joe’s nappy kimchi and Goshen cubed radish kimchi. Give it a try! And I’m glad you are back 💜
There's 1 Korean restaurant in my area so I eat there frequently. The kimchi there is fantastic. I knew it was going to be good when I saw the owners mother in the back making it in a huge bowl. He sells it by the pound lol. I knew I was in the right place when she asked me (she's not fluent in English and I barely know Korean) "You want fresh or sour?" 🙌🙌🙌🙌
You’re buying the wrong kimchi!! You gotta buy the one in plastic bags those taste the best
I buy a brand at Walmart that comes in mild or spicy. It's a small pound size package made in America and it's very fresh and delicious. The price is $4.99. The jar you held up looks scary lol. I definitely wouldn't buy it.
Thanks to BTS💜 K culture is everywhere🥳💝Love it🙌🏻
Sean, I can perfectly relate to your kimchi experience: I’m half Russian and in Russian cuisine, there’s a special kind of pickled gherkins. Actually, they’re not pickled but fermented (like kimchi), but it’s close to impossible to buy anything that comes close to it anywhere else. In most cases, they put vinegar and sugar into it, which absolutely has nothing to do with the original recipe! You put these gherkins into simple salt water with some herbs and spices etc. (which may vary from one family to another, but garlic and dill are always there), and the slightly sour taste comes from the fermentation only. After about three days, you can already eat those gherkins. At that state, they’re called “SLIGHTLY salted gherkins”, because that’s basically how they taste. Later on they’re called “SALTED gherkins”, although then they do taste sour, too, but it’s that fermentation-type sourness, not vinegar-sourness! Just adding garlic to German Dillgurken doesn’t do the trick! (I know how to make the gherkins I want by myself, but it’s difficult to get all the ingredients at the same time over here, especially as I live in the city and my aunts taught me to put in certain leaves from trees and bushes that I simply can’t get in the city, at least not in a food-safe quality. So until I retire from my busy professional life, I will probably continue to use fermented gherkins from the Polish market just behind the German border - best baughtfrom the wooden barrel, but the small plastic buckets or plastic bags are also ok. That’s the closest you can get.)
Try the one from Izrael, does the trick as well
@@reginapetrosian8742 I see, you know what I’m talking about! 😊
I honestly have tried a few Bilgogi foords and found them too spicy no flavour or very salty. I could not fathom that Koreans eat that much salt or heat with little to no flavour. Or the kimchi looks so 'cooked'. I am basing this off the many cooking and mukbangs that I have watched. I would love to try authentic foods. Alas the one Korean restaurant that was close to my home, I found overpriced and tasteless. I mean they sold the packaged instant miso soup with a few bits or spinach for a doegijang (butchered that) but the soybean paste soup with tofu. Regretfully, the one korean I liked in the place as the rest were Germans and bad attitude Korean. I mean fighting with my table cause I asked for my rice to be reheated. They served it with the frozen pork belly that needed to be grilled. They closed down shortly after but I miss that young Mr Park and hope he is doing well. I thought if that was the impression they wanted to give of authentic Korean food then that was a clear miss. I am not korean but Jamaican and live in Germany. Sean please recommend some foods for us.
You moved to LA? Well, I had bad kimchi from a restaurant. I don't like it. The flavour was bad. I tried a kimbap from there, and how could that go wrong, but it was. Pay attention to where BTS would go to eat and shop and I am sure you will find better food.
So you buy south Korean foods after saying not to support South Korea
You are so cute❤❤❤❤
Don’t become a kimchi male Karen
Thank you for this report, now let's talk about BTS 🤔
There is more to SK than these girly looking boys jumping around on a stage you know.
