A question for you Mr Cullen, have you ever lost a rod section tackling up in the boat?

Steve, I’m an ex-course match angler that’s just recently taken up fly fishing, as you can imagine it’s a steep learning curve. Did I understand you correctly reference leaders ? did you on this occasion simply strip off 12ft of fluorocarbon then add a tippet instead of using a factory made tapered leader ? I apologise if this is a dopey question.

Would you do anything different if approaching wild browns?

Ina decent wave they perfer a wet pal, but with browns, i've found smaller flies are more succesful than bigger ones. They also tend to fed near weed so CDC flies work better!

I'm sure your a great fisherman but I can't for the life of me understand setting up the rod and cast while in the boat. Watching it it was a right faff. Would be even more so with a proper 11ft loch style rod. Love the flies and method though for what you are doing.

Hi Pal, I get what you're saying, but I promise the proof is in the pudding, I have NEVER broke a rod setting thing sup in this manner, however, I have seen many a (car park) set ups get broken while getting into a boat. Usually, a slip and the rod hand goes straight out to support the fall, and PING!!

That was a wee bit too awkward for my liking so will stick to setting up on the bank, I'll take my chance. Tight lines 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Why would anyone sit in a Boat bobbing up and down plus the wind blowing and decide to put their Rod together and add the Tippet and flies , faffing around trying to make a tapered leader and add flies all the while your Floating line will be getting blown around and as you start to add the tippet it`ll get tangled and dragged under the Boat .. I dont care how good of an Angler he "THINKS" or "Believes" he is , this is not the way to do it.. Why not stand in the Car park like most of us sensible anglers do and set up your Rod and tippet in the comfort of a wind free place while having a Solid ground to stand on ? REDICULOUS is what this is ..and Im talking from 4O years of experience..
Like I said , I don`t care who you are or how good some the guys posting here think you are , but this is Totally wrong . I never in my 40 years of Fly Fishing watched any anglers( and I`ve fished with some very good Pro flyfishermen) set up their Rod in a moving boat with the wind blowing ..Thumbs DOWN from me on this ..

I have been doing tis for 35 years, never had a problem, managed to break two rods that I' set up in the car park and seen way more broke getting into the boat, each to their own
