  • Here is (yet another) Magnavox ZV427MG9-A DVD VCR shipped from Georgia to me to be repaired. The customer complained about the power would not stay on, after 13 seconds it would power off again. I found a key power supply missing from the capstan motor which also drives the carriage loading motor. I found a shorted electrolytic capacitor and it had damaged a TO-92 switching transistor. After the defective components were replaced, a VCR tape path cleaning, and an DVD optical pickup cleaning and it is ready to go again..

    I sent my unit to NORCAL715 because watching some of his repair video's, I felt good that if I sent it to him, he would do a quality repair. Well, I wasn't wrong, he did a very OUTSTANDING repair of my unit. The video he made of the repair really shows his repair capabilities. His communication during the repair was superb, very easy to understand every thing he was doing. His communication to me via Email was just as good. I live in Georgia and sent it to him in California. If you have "Sick" unit, contact him even if you have a local repair shop because I know for sure he will do you right. Watching him use a wiring diagram during the repair and myself understanding he diagram was awesome. Thanks.... Ken

      I'm in Georgia too, with one with problems. At least it powers up. Intra pandemic mail costs have really jacked up, and repairs to these, if not for love or sentimental reasons are something to consider.

    Steve, I too always used an Acetone based solvent whenever I cleaned a PCB or the heads and tape path etc, I never had any issues whatsoever....in fact it left the circuit boards and solder connections looking bright and shiny, better than new.
    So, to whom ever said Acetone is bad evidently never worked in electronics service.
    Also, nice troubleshooting, those type of components are very satisfying to find because one knows that they are defective..unlike I.C.chips which can be a roll of the dice sometimes.
    Good job.

    I followed along with your video and found my Capstan Motor was reading 223 ohms. Bad Capstan motor. Not exactly good news but I can find one now.

      czcams.com/video/L3EL38xhkj0/video.html at 8:24 If you are reading the 5V line to ground (pin 2 to pin 10 of the capstan motor ribbon cable) then 223 ohms is excellent. In this video I got 230 ohms. I don't think that is the problem.

    I subscribed , found you via being a proud MagFunai ZV427MG9 recorder owner with a problem. Had it a year, and finally decided to take a stab at fixing it. I'm trying to learn some electronics and struggling. Have fixed a couple of things. Old KLH record player, and a drill charger. Been challenging, for me.I'm 62 and long time since algebra and doing ohm laws and reading about different formulas. Brain doesn't have a refresh button. I like your videos. Well done. Have a Kenwood TS-930S, early serial , that won't power up. I read about problems with the power supply, and some transistors, so may either consider sending it to you or, if I can get some equipment, and learn to use a scope, may take a stab at it. slow going for now.

    Why does this remind me of Frank Zappa - Dinah-Moe Humm
    ? :) Oh he applied rotation to a sugar plum.... ;) The owner really cares about his stuff! You know he cracked it open and spent a few minutes cleaning it out. I like it! Good Job, customer!
    Great troubleshooting & repair! Impressed! (No big deal for you, right? :) This is probably what happened to my JVC SVHS recorder after a strike to the system. Thankfully I had everything on a surge protector (one short, damn!) Sad thing is the unit is practically brand new with little to no wear and it recorded and played great. Kinda torqued me off because I had just gotten it less than a month earlier. Fuse didn't pop, she just won't do anything... I'll drop you an email, you got the deal with it here.Yea, honey... I'll be there in a minute. (snicker)... 40 years! Damn, you're my age!, you old stud! :)

    .... I made a 'Clicker Cassette' years ago for diagnosing tape transport issues without damaging a test tape.
    A cassette with the tape removed, the IR ports blocked off.

    Just an observation, but part of the enjoyment of watching electronics repair videos is trying to figure out what is causing the fault(s) to occur. However, if you put the solution in the title it takes some of the fun out of watching the video. In this case for example you've stated there was a bad cap and transistor; on seeing that I'm less inclined to watch the video. I know that a large part of any repair is the diagnosis but still, knowing the resolution makes it less fun to watch. Putting the resolution in the description is fine, but putting it in the title spoils the fun. Even knowing it can be fixed also spoils the fun. Just saying. :)

    Great video with good detail. I inherited the same non-working combo model from my sister. I discovered the the photo diode (Q1506) used for the take up reel sensor is bad. I do not have a service manual. Do mind telling me what the part number is so I can cross it to something.
    Thanks, Dennis

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  Před 4 lety

      ACETONE, It eats that kind of foam, try in on a small spot 1st. I tried it on a flat screen several years ago and it did not damage the screen.

    I own a ZV427MG9 Magnavox VCR/DVD recorder but the VCR side doesn’t accept Video tapes. They get stuck midway when I insert a tape.

    I have the older Magnavox version of this model. The HDMI output stopped working. The other output works but I need the HDMI output. What is the most likely cause of this?

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  Před 3 lety

      Most likely some bad capacitors in the HDMI encoder or the encoder itself has failed.
