AFAIK epoxying is common among very cheap components instead of manufacturing an IC housing. PC Engine cartridges are the same way.

I like how you referred to the Super 64 not being physically compatible with the SNES as a "missed opportunity" but the sad reality is that EON knew what they were doing when they designed it that way. An HDMI adapter for SNES is probably a future project for them and they want to make money, so I can assume it'll basically be the same product as the Super64 in a new shell. I'm kinda surprised that you didn't try it again after you opened it up to solder the audio connection back, unless you did and I missed it.
Also great vid as always. Consistently impressed by the content you put up.

Great video, just as I'd expect from Game Sack. I found this especially helpful because your mention of the RetroPad32, which I quickly looked up. I use a pretty unconventional controller called a QuadStick (for people like me with quadriplegia) and I've absolutely scoured the internet for controller adapters that might help me access my older consoles but somehow missed this one. Anyway I contacted the developer of the RetroPad32 and he actually contacted the developer of the QuadStick and it looks like support for my controller is going to be added to the latest firmware. Long story short, looks like after five long years I'll be reunited with some of my favorite consoles (on actual hardware). Thanks for making these videos, they do make a difference.

    Great video as usual Joe!
I have the Retropad 32; it's absolutely perfect for emulation, you basically get an input for your PC into which you can plug most any original controller, and it just works. The PC will see them all as the same controller, as the Retropad connects to the PC and the controllers (with adapter cables) connect to the Retropad, making for a very stable and predictable setup. Combined with newer versions of Retroarch you get latencies that's the same as the original consoles, tou can even go below that to compensate for an lcd tv... and if you go all out, like I did, you can hook your PC up to a CRT using CRT emudriver and a compatible card, and get native resolutions using the switchres function. Top it off by using Launchbox as a frontend, hide Windows completely, and the result is a pefect retro game setup. I own all the original consoles, but I just keep them in a nice display case to look at while playing on this setup. The downside is that this solution is both pricey and time consuming...

That giant metal bar was probably a heatsink, and the epoxy over the chips might’ve been to keep the chips from de-soldering under high temps or to keep them from popping off the board when it flexes. If it’s not for any practical reasons, then it’s just to conceal the chips they’re using so that nobody will rip off their design without ruining it and/or having to re-solder it after it gets ripped off the board with the epoxy. That isn’t going to stop anyone trying to reverse it, but it will cost them more time and money to do it.

Joe Redifer oh man I remember you from the Magic Box forums back in the day! I used to go by Xero_0 back then haha. Happy to see you still kickin' and love the Game Sack content you and Dave worked on. I produce an Arabic podcast myself and it's nice to see MB alumni putting in work 😂. Best of luck!

Excellent episode! I got new ideas on how to play my retro games. For example, using my brand new PlayStation Classic controllers on my real PlayStation! Than you very much!

A retropad32 is amazing for a fear of mine: my original controllers breaking and having to look for expensive/used ones for replacement or extra controllers.

A much better alternative to the $150+ EON Super might be a $5 svideo cable + $99 RetroTINK-2x. It's basically the same when it comes to the N64 svideo output at 480p HDMI, but then you can also connect any composite, svideo, or component input to TINK and connect all of your other consoles as well.

We failed you... Dave and you are just one of the best retro game guys. Should have a million and plus subscribers. Dave could quit his job and you could give me the old school knowledge I need. Long time patron and fan.

I was looking into the N64 adapter but $150 and you had to fix it straight out of the box. Aweful quality control at a high price

Whoa, that first product is incredible! That’s literally exactly what I’ve been looking for to use my SNES controllers on my Mega Drive, as Mega Drive D-Pads are crap.
