Excited Gurkha recruits arrive in UK to begin British Army career

- This year's intake of recruits to the Brigade of Gurkhas has arrived in the UK, stepping off a plane and into a new life in the British Army.
For the 337 recruits who are beginning their basic training, reporting for duty is a unique experience, one that is not shared by any others joining the Armed Forces.
For a start, they have travelled 4,500 miles to be here, which for most of them was their first time on a plane.

I've worked with some Gurkhas a few times and if I ever wanted someone to watch my back, these are the guys. Very honourable and full of integrity.
But would you watch their backs? Would you return the favour? Probably not.

Wonderful to see such smart, well turned out, and disciplined soldiers coming to serve in the UK Armed Forces. We are fortunate to have such allies as Nepal. Good luck to each and every one of them. I was very fortunate and humbled to have met and shook the hand of a World War Two Gurkha veteran and holder of the Victoria Cross at a military event back in 2002. God bless them all. 🇬🇧

I had two Gurkha knifes from Burma given as gifts to my aunty who cared for 2 injured Gurkha soldiers during ww11. She also was given two ebony, ivory, tortoise shell and onyx boxes.

I served with the Gurkhas at Minden Barracks Penang in the 70s, they were amazing soldiers.

The Gurkas are not classed as warriors. They are mercenaries and only Britain exalts them. They are considered cowards by Pashtuns
@sullyx5142 The Gurkhas are brave and loyal soldiers. They are admired in other countries as well as the UK. You wouldn't feel so brave if you came face to face with one and suggested that they were cowards. Anyone can be an armchair warrior. Not everyone can become a Gurkha.

3. The Pashtuns you talk about are they also known as the Taliban. I've not heard of the Pashtuns. So I can't comment.

The greatest of respect to all the Gurkhas. We were raised on my granddad telling us stories of how when he was captured by the Japanese in WW2, the Japanese sentries would refuse to go out on patrol if there was a rumour of Gurkhas in the area, they were so feared.
That's scary. I heard stories of Gurkhas slipping into enemy trenches at night, and in the morning most of them would be found head less 😯

I severed along side them in 2005 they really are so disciplined, best of look to them all
My Dad was with Gurkha's in Malaya 1962-65. On Security duty , he wondered for months how they knew so much , people in and out of camp . And lads seeking out for a few beers . They would have written reports every 12 hours .. After months on end they told him . We hide in the dustbins , and lay on the water tower , to watch the camp .

We will, as you can see by their welcome. We love the Gurkha people, they fought hard & brave to help us all during WW2
The brits are going to scandalize them just wait and see. The same way they illegitimized south asian contributions in the world wars will be the same way the Gurkhas will be illegitimized.
It's very touching to see the care and affection with which the Training Staff welcome the new recruits.
How can you not love the Gurkhas. We have a detachment from their Signals Company based in our local town. The respect shown to them by the locals is heartwarming..With the recruitment issues the British Army appears to be currently experiencing, why don’t we expand the Brigade to its previous strength?

@@Peter-jo6yu they are just lovely people.. I was in Rotary a few years back and we ran annual fundraisers for their charities, supporting villages back home. Couldn’t meet nicer people.
Unfortunately some of them were killed in Afghanistan. RIP to the fallen Gurkhas. May the Lord protect the Gurkhas. UK is very lucky to have such loyal friend on their side. 🙏🏻

I remember sailing down south to the Falklands on QE2 with them on board. All round wonderful people, it was an honour to have served with them.

Indeed so. It's an over 200 years old relationship built from mutual respect borne out of the most ferocious hand to hand fighting imaginable, which if you tried to explain the history to an outsider is so preposterous that few would believe you, and yet its all true.
If you type "Hallelujah" into the search box, look for the Ramesh Rai video of these British Army Gurkhas singing and reflect that these are the same soldiers who wouldn't wince at lopping the head off their enemy with their kukri.

We just watched their relatives and pals pass out the other day. They've arrived right in the middle of our summer months, it get's much colder in winter. As is being said, respect to every one of them.

God bless them all , as a Irish American, my Grandfather was a Royal Munster Fusilier Brigedeer , he lost his brother , in The Boer War , I’ve 3 Uncles in The Marines during Ww2 , of the 21 kids my grandfather had, 6 fought for The Irish Guards and 3 for Patton in Ww2 , The Gurkas are a great example of honor and duty and this video brings a smile to my face , God Bless them all keep them safe!

I knew a Ghurka when I was in the Army in the 80's....Great Guy....excellant Soldier.....and I have worked with ex Ghurka's when I worked in security....great guys....Loyal ..Tough....who can argue with a group of Soldiers whose Regimental Motto is ""Better To Die Than Be A Coward"...! Lessons there for the youth of Great Britain.

Traditionally after selection they serve and send their wages back to their family in Nepal then after 22 years service are returned to Nepal as honoured veterans. So their objective is not emigration to UK rather an honourable career and improved family life in Nepal.
That's the deal that the British Army offers and they accept.
Alternatively the Indian Army has Gurkha regiments..
They are so professional at a young age, amazing soldiers.
