  • This is my favourite version of whipping post specifically Duane's solo because of how aggressive and fast paced it is. He went full send on this show compared to the other versions of whipping post. It's very fun to play too and I haven't seen a single cover for this version so I guess this is the first. enjoy

Thank for bringing this music back to life. The early 70’s version with Duane and Berry were the best.

Thank you for bringing this to life for us lifelong fans! Imagine only 24 years old and how much more amazing music he could have produced! His legend lives forever!

Its a pleasure to cover Duane's work, he was a master of his craft and his solos are one hell of a trip everytime, especially their uncommon live versions which are overshadowed by the popular versions. He played with a different approach every show and i could only imagine what he could've come up with had he lived longer

This is fantastic playing, by both yourself and our dear departed Brother Duane. I’m always fascinated and pleased to hear different interpretations of early ABB songs, especially ones recorded while Duane was still alive. I’ve always been a huge fan of the band, and Duane is still my all time favorite guitarist. He had an unique ability, no doubt the result of innate talent and tons of hard work, to play solos that were just perfect interpretations and expansions of the song, no matter how simple or complex the framework of the music. He managed to create music in his head a split second before his fingers executed it on the guitar, and the only other guitarist whom I feel came close to his magic is the late Wes Montgomery. I think you can hear something of Wes’ style and magic in Duane’s playing as well as a lot of the great bebop jazz horn players like John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
I’m only guessing here, but this version sounds like it may have been recorded after the one featured on the album At Fillmore East was already in the can. I’ve read that the band listened to the tapes of each show with producer Tom Dowd after each performance, discussing what worked best and what they’d like to try to improve things even more. I feel like the band knew they had a great performance in the version used on the album, and that Duane was willing to take more chances on the recording featured in your video. Note that this is only speculation on my part.
Duane died only shortly after I picked up my first guitar, a hand-me-down from my older brother who showed me my first simple songs and gave me a great start on my musical journey. Back then we used to spin albums at 16 RPM which lowered the notes by just about an octave and made it easier to figure out the faster guitar licks. I know that nowadays there are ways of slowing things down without changing the pitch, and I’m guessing that is how you managed to nail down this burning, frantic solo. Still, it must have taken a lot of work for you to accomplish this, and it looks like you’re right on the money as far as fingerings and phrasing are concerned. You’ve also nailed Duane’s tone pretty closely, which is quite an achievement in itself.
The version issued on At Fillmore East is and will always be my favorite guitar solo of all time, but I’m grateful to you for sharing this alternative take. It opens up another window into the mind and music of this great artist, and shows how easily he was able to create great solos on the spot, evoking memory and surprise while pushing himself and his bandmates to greater musical heights. Thank you so much for sharing this masterpiece and for working so hard to execute it on your guitar. I’ve become an instant subscriber, and I wish you long, happy life and great success with your channel. Very well done, sir!

I appreciate the wonderful words and compliments, thanks a ton sir! And a wonderful story and insight too. Indeed it is much more forgiving to learn solos in the modern day with all the technology compared to the older days.
Duane was a beast on improvising and it truly striked me how he approached his solos so differently in every performance. Listening to the fillmore recordings of whipping post made me set a goal to learn all the versions. Its crazy to think someone as young as Duane could figure all these assortments of notes in the moment itself and play it so fluently almost as if like he was speaking through the guitar.
It's a blessing to have access to the fillmore recordings because it is truly a gem.
I have another version of whipping post on the way, and surely I'll post the famously known version from the album too someday. Thankful it has reached the intended audience. Thanks and stay tuned.

I saw TABB many times but only once while Duane was still alive. Whipping Post epitomizes his genius and blew me away in concert.

Can you possibly make a video on how to play this? Or share where you found how to play it. I think it would be pretty awesome

Sorry but I don't do lessons well, it definitely isn't my forte besides I learnt this solo by ear. Maybe I might try giving lessons in the future when I can give time. Thanks for watching though

How long did this take you to memorize? That’s pretty insane to be able to play the entire thing from memory, would take me several months of daily practice and I’d still probably mess it up a ton

I've listened to the particular solo extensively before even trying to learn it. I just get addicted to Duane's solos over literally anything haha, so it kind of helps in remembering every bit

Amazing playing, by you and of course Duane, who originated it.
Is this version of Whipping Post on the six CD set 'The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings'?

From what i know, there's 4 different versions of whipping post which was recorded in fillmore east i.e first show, second show, closing show and march 1971. all of which was recorded on different days. This version i covered is the second show version. I believe the commonly known 23 minute version of whipping post is the march 1971 version
