Whipping Post ( Gregg Allman )
I been run down
Lord, I been lied to
And I don't know why
I let that mean woman make out a fool
She took all my money
Wrecked my new car
Now she's with one of my good-time buddies,
Drinkin' in some cross-town bar
Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I been
Tied to the whippin' post
Tied to the whippin' post
Good Lord, I feel like I'm dyin'
My friends tell me
That I been such a fool
But I got to stand there an' take it
All for loving you
Drown myself in sorrow
As I look at what you done
Nothin' seems to change;
That bad times stay the same,
And I can't run
Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I been
Tied to the whippin' post
Tied to the whippin' post
Good Lord, I feel like I'm dyin'

Rest in Peace, Dickey Betts. The world is a darker place without you, my friend. 🥺❤️🙏
My teenage years continue to die. But he sure gave me some great moments.
Brothers, savour how much brighter the world was and still is for the music with which he filled it and left for us to savour while we remain here. Listening to Dickey's guitar never fails to lift my heart.
116 thumbs down. That’s 116 Clueless people that wouldn’t know good music if it punched them in the face. GREATEST LIVE ALBUM EVER. I bought it in 71when I was 18 and still listening to it almost 50 years later.
Who the fuck dislikes this? I was introduced to this song by Zappa, and this is the best version.
Greatest Live Album of all time in my humble opinion. And I respect everyone else’s opinion for what they believe is the best Album of all time. And they are not ever wrong, as music is art and is in the eye of the beholder. So we must all respect the artistic choices that are made by all others. Nobody is ever “wrong”, as that is their interpretation of the art that they have consumed.
Everyone has their favorite versions, but this one is an absolute monster.
👍
Mine too.
The other recordings of this song just can’t compare
amen
there were very few bands putting out LPs w/ such long extended instrumentals,
& even fewer of those long extended instrumentals that merited the extra time @
the excellence of this and those few others
thx to this LP's sales there was soon a bandwagon of 1st-rate fellow travellers
this album was a HUGE special treat scratching that itch a few others had created
Objectively the best
I was there , it was March, 3 months before the Fill.oreEast closed. The gig was sold out weeks in advance, somebody called in a bombscare to the FillmoreEast before showtime, and all the ticketholders were back outside, some cat gave me his ticket stub, the Hell's Angel bouncer looked at me, laughed and let me in!!! He knew!Told me not to get caught smoking weed, and I said, Okay, you won't catch me, and we both laughed, and I ran in. I was 15, WhippingPost started at 3AM The Bros played until the sun was just coming up. One of the best shows I ever been, tight so tight.
Fantastic story, I'm hugging you😍😍😍
That's awesome. I'd give my left nut to have seen this live.
Wow!!
I genuinly feel bad for anyone who has never or may never hear this music. They're missing 23 minutes of something necessary in their lives.
I've been trying to get tired of this for more than 50 years. I still haven't managed to.
Still listening since 1971 ~ and yes , I am 67 years old !!!! ❤️🌺♾️
Back somewhere 74 - 75 sitting back everyone in the room is passing hooters round drinking beers laughing carrying on like the time will never end and Fillmore East playing mate those were good times and I'm still in 2023 cranking this groove.
Groove on, bro.I'm with ya in spirit.
Same. I was 15.
Whipping Post is the absolute most iconic, ultimate jam of all-time. This song changed my life 25 years ago.
There will never be a band as great as the Allman Brothers
On the old vinyl disc you could hear at the end of whipping post that the band launched right into the Eat a Peach jam for another 18-20 minutes.

How can one say, Duane was not one of the greatest. This was 1971 live. No studio tricks. With underrated and equally great Dickie who Duane even said was better guitarist. Then Greg and Berry. What a band. No other band ever like them.
Dickie was not the better guitarist
Let's not forget the rhythm section!
@eurydicejones Maybe not, but he certainly had a great answer back to Duane. They both were great. Two leed guitarist were unheard of.
Greatest American band there ever was.
@@eurydicejonesDuane said so many times. There's an interview called "everybody in my band has to be better than me" or something to that effect. It's here on CZcams. He says it in that interview. Or he always said Dickey was the good one and he was the popular one.
So yes, even Duane thought Dickey was better than him. In fact, he believed everyone in the band was as good of a musician or even better than he was. That's some high praise because Duane knew he was hot 5#it even back then. Listen to Rick Hall tell stories about Duane. You get a good feeling for what kind of person he was. Headstrong. A go getter. And EXTREMELY intelligent.
An incredible concert. Saw them in 69-70. But, that night, they were touched by Angels. It still makes me tear up remembering this great concert. You had to be there. This album, (thank God!) captures it perfectly. Duane,, Gregg, ohhh, everyone. Rest in peace. THANK YOU.
Few bands have ever achieved this level of being unbridled... completely running free. Grateful Dead, Zappa, Marshall Tucker Band...they had the divine spark. Perfect music made by imperfect people. On paper, impossible...yet they did it. Thanks for the music. It couldn't have been easy....
These guys at their best - unmatched.
This entire Album is monster..when all the OGs were alive .Now only Dicky and Jaimo are still us.One of the Greatest American Rock bands ever.
And now Dickey is gone!🙏
I saw them in Memorial Gym at Vanderbilt University in 1970 sat right under Duane. I was never the same Thank God!!!
Is that the basketball gym down there because we saw Genesis at Vanderbilt University in 1977, some type of gym.
This was the best every, a time to remember for life and ever after 🍄Long live the name of the great Allman Brothers Band, 👍 Michael Allman and Duane Detts , very proud of your work, l know you're Dad s are. PLEASE KEEP ON PLAYING 🎼🎼🎼👌👍🤜🤛🍄
They don’t make music like this anymore ! We were priviledged to live in the greatest era of rock and roll !
This cant be quantified adequately in words. Its just music and its timeless and unreproduceable.
My God it’s April 12 2024 53 years after it was recorded . The first time I heard this version was 52 years ago and I’m still going through those same emotions chills, tears, smiles hair standing up(what’s left of it). God do I miss the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND.😢
Here after Dickey. Me too. Eyes are watering. Trying not to cry. A bit younger than you I think. Born in 64. First heard this I’m guessing in 79 and it’s never left me. ❤ to you brother
@@dankowalski6925 , yes I’m a little older born in 58. Losing Dickie is sad . Thank God we have a lot of great music to listen to. PEACE
When the song slows down and gets quiet..those sweet, sad, crescendos that build with slow intensity (go from about 10:12 to 15:25...that what takes true skill--to play electric instruments with that type of feel and touch. I first heard this in 1972 when I was 14 years old. I hear it today and it brings tears to my eyes. This, folks, was the absolute high-water mark of rock music. Never was there a collection of true musicians like this on the stage afterward.
That’s Dickey Betts! And his enormous contribution!
Sometimes I feel
agreed. Hearing this as a kid made me think the world was full of genius.
@Ramesh Well said. It's not a solo by some athletic Yngwie-type shredder (not to slag on the Y Man lol), but it does something to the listener no frenetic metalplay can. Instant goosebumps.
Nope, they were so fucked up on drugs it took few minutes to figure it out
Got the headphones on, joint lit...just letting the music take over. Just like Gregg said in that interview with Conan O'Brien. He could listen to these albums and was immediately taken back to 1971 at Fillmore East. God I can't imagine the years of pain and anguish and heartache that Gregg went through without his Big Bro. You're back together now, Brothers. Miss you, Skydog! Miss you, Gregg! ❤️🎸🙏
I have a Goldtop today because of Duane & Dickey. My 2 favorite guitarists to ever grace this earth. The best tandem lead guitarists to ever take a stage. We'll never see anything like it again.
That rhythm section is phenomenal
So symphonic so damn beautiful the emotion emoted from the guitar playing is amazing soulful hearfelt searing note after note my god i love this song band touches my soul every friggin time and im 67 and had the honor of seeing these guys in all there line ups.....wow u know sometimes .....i think id just die without music like this to restore my faith in beauty amidst covid 19 ive been listening to this album before going to bed each night...a classic in all ways rock blues jazz the guitars in such harmony soumds like a symphony ....ok im done good night all and stay safe!!!!
damn fine idea to deal with the Covid Blues for sure.
Beautifully said.
I hear you my brother be safe .
Real music by fabulous artists. No drum tracks or simple rhythm guitars like today’s garbage. The feelings brought out left me crying. Because of Greg’s loss of his brother and our loss of even greater music. RIP to them both
I bought the album shortly after it came out. 1971. It's a masterpiece of southern rock, blues and a touch of jazz. Don't know how many times I've listened to this, but a lot! Still amazes me! I'm 73. Not likely we'll ever hear anything like this again.......
Well put
But we now have scores of recordings of the original band to listen to. I’m so thankful for that!!
Never again. You are 110% correct.
A true masterpiece.
The Beethoven of Blues.
The Standard of Southern Rock.
The Guideline for Guitarists.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Allman Brothers Band.
Me too. me too. sigh... ❤
It's truly amazing and timeless . Duane allman and Dickie betts are absolutely legendary . Will continue to be inspiring for generations as long as people have good taste
A genuine masterpiece. Beyond words.
Thank you. That really does say it all. Period.
Indeed
Back in 98 I was laying in a hospital bed recovering from open heart surgery when my brother brought in my cassette player and on it was this album. Let me tell you, Whipping Post never sounded so damn intense and powerful. I had tears in my eyes. Still to this day, this has got to be the best live album.
3X bypass 12/19. I can relate./ Keep smiling, pal.
Brutal
I passed a kidney stone to this song.
I woke up today got on a chat site and this album popped up for some fricken reason. " she took all my money, wrecked my new car, now she's drinking with my buddy in a crosstown bar, sometimes I feel like I've been tied" the song went on u-tube and on the stereo. Sounded better to me than the last time I heard it toooooooooo.mm
Martin, I just had a heart attack this past Wednesday, surgery Thursday and I’m right there with you brother. I can’t hardly type this!
This is my second time listening to this starting before midnight. My brain will be firing on all cylinders when I finally go to bed, but it is well worth it. Heck, I am a 74-year old Vietnam veteran and I deserve my favorite drug - music.
You said it
My favorite band of all time--and I'm an 83 yr old great-grandmother. Love these boys, all of them because they make me happy just listening. The talent of all of them is just fantastic.
This is without doubt, the greatest 23 minutes in history.
Charles Parker As well as the greatest 22 minutes and 59 seconds in history.
AMEN
No doubt!
This piece is pristine, nearing The Supreme, BUT as one who sat at the "Woodstck feet" of THE Jimi Hendrix, Jimi's most Sublime outbrsts top THE Allman Bros Band's (and EVERYBODY else's...)
amazing offerings...I put ABB and Peter Green era FM live jams as equal efforts...
@@yarbroughclifton1467 vtgvv x, wwx c
I've been listening to this cut for almost 45 years and I just realized that around 17:53, they play "Frère Jacques."
We just figured that out this morning as well!
The Allman Brothers were really true talent. Such a great band.
We were there at 5th row Center with my three best friends Lego slimbow and finno and of course whipping will we were the boys back then we had a great great night they played till the sun came up
49 years later and I still get chills listening to this🥴🎸😎🙏🇺🇸🎸😉👍
i first heard this version in 1971..it still touches my soul in 2017...the best of the best...
How are you doing?
im my humble opinion i think Fillmore East is world class, one of the best albums ever made, and live that says it all
Yes!
Billy Graham said they were the best performing band, hands down
This is the first "real" music album that I ever I bought. I had no idea the genius these guys were. Fast forward 50 years later and they are still amazing.
All the great s , are almost gone. Need new rock and roll , hear Me3 you'll a lot of fine music people s show bands need help. / Rape/ now lots rock & roll for it hasn't
Can you even put a 20 minute song on vinyl?
Found this album still sealed! Pink Capricorn label! .50cents. hell of a find.
In the first 2 seconds you immediately know what's about to go down. By far, the very best version of Whipping Post EVER !!!
I grew up with this, Skynyrd, Led Zep, Jimi, Clapton... I hit my 100th ABB show sometime in the late 2010s, so I've seen a lot of line ups. But THIS, this is as good as it gets. You know Heaven has the most ass kickin' Band, I almost can't wait to hopefully get there. 🙏🥃😚💨💨
Simply put, this version is an emotional roller coaster. A straight up proper band. 15:12 to when they speed up again at 15:27 goes from despair to full on anger.
You had to be there it was the best best night of my life I have to tell you the Allman Brothers live at the Fillmore East nothing like it on Earth
I was 12 when this came out....im 64 now ....Its Still The Shit 😎🤙🏼
Live Rock & Roll 💪
To szczytowe osiagniecie ludzkosci w dziedzinie muzyki gitarowej..wyzej nie wejdziesz
Dzisiaj, to już raczej nie, ale kiedyś nieliczni chyba jednak wchodzili.
The Allman Brothers mastery of ebb, and flow here is nothing short of astonishing.
I was fortunate to see these 3 times before Bill closed the east venue, came to believe with heart needing to hear these blues my therapy was kick into overdrive, not needing my head shrunk, but by being revive by these and many shows for a 1 1/2 I was was mailing these , I was hooked, couldn't, didn't want these days to ever end.
.......................................Epic....................................
The most glorious sound I have ever heard is Gregg chording the "whipping" starting at 16:38..... his B-3 is pedaled to the floor and growling...producing that velvety tube powered overdrive bliss.... and coupled with the acoustics in the Fillmore.... well there you have it. To me, that is the single most moving moment in the never ending peaks of brilliance captured that weekend. Like Skydog said at the end "Thank you..... it sure has been a fine weekend! Gregg and Duane, Berry and Butch, Lamar and DDT... may God rest your souls..... you are all the best.....
Joseph Vengen I witnessed the exact sound at best Clemson university's little John coliseum. I'm grateful. He died shortly after that performance.
I agree 100%
Amen
Awesome yes, but (subjective I know) to me Gregg's belt out after silence in the studio (yes studio) album version is even more "F U!" than here! Gregory Lenoir and entire band just unbelievably talented
Joe....you obviously know music more than most who post comments here. You are on point.
Their talent was born, not taught.
So damn perfect. So fluid, every note, every instrument, every second of every song. The Allman Brothers are like a fine wine, as their music is timeless, getting better with age.
The first time I heard this, shortly after the album came out, it brought tears to my eyes. What an incredible masterpiece.
This one of the very best songs that is NEVER GOING TO BE FORGOTTEN by some of us old guys.....👍👍...it's timeless
I was lucky enough to see Duane and Dickey together and they were pure silk...72yrs. Old and that show was in early Sept. ‘71... it remains the best show of my lifetime!!
Both lead guitarists, Duane and Dicky, and the others are beyond this world. One of the very best live albums ever.
Best ever!
THE BEST and I say that because there's only room for the top for one and this is it...
Agreed, this album ranks in top five live albums
Nothing against ABB but I once watched a two and a half hour performance of Flashlight. One of the best? Sure, but not best ever.
I always said Dicky Betts was criminally underrated as a guitarist AND a songwriter. So many of Dickys great solos were attributed to Duane who was one of the top five all time rock guitarists IMO ☯️🕉🙀🐾🙏
Not only one of the greatest Live albums ever, but also one of the greatest albums, period!!!
Name the better one?
Absolutely
22.58 of pure rock music...nothing bitter to my ears...2022
This whole band was on fire here. RIP Dickey Betts, you're up with Duane again on the great whippin' post in the sky.
I was at the Fillmore East Sat. early show, no kid 4th row, 3rd seat in, 1971, all were great ABB, Johnny Winter/Rick Derringer with Bobby Caldwell on drums who headlined, and the Elvin Bishop Band who opened.
the greatest jam band of all time period-even with the lineup changes.
Great music that soothes your soul!🥰🤩
2 words.....FUCKING AWESOME !!!
R.I.P Gregg Allman, May 27, 2017 age 69
What beautiful improvisation by such great musicians...... Can't get enough even 40 years later. God bless them all
I am 33 born in 90 my dad has shown me a lot of great rock music I really thank him for that but today stumbled across something great I love old rock and this just has to be one of the best genres
What I wouldn't give to discover this for the first time all over again. Someone slipped this into my car's 8-track player when I was 16 and I almost ran off the road.
No Doubt the best live performance of any band. They take you up when you're standing on your feet and they continue to take you on a trip to a real Mellow glow one of my favorite songs ever including a memory of Elizabeth Reed
THIS SINGLE SONG TAKES ME THOUGH MY WHOLE LIFE IN 20 MINS.
came by to celebrate the birthday of this great album's producer, the late tom dowd - born october 20th, 1925
I love this song so much I dreamed of it last night.
Duane era lineup was just incredible. They have no equal
No doubt, when the guy yells "whipping post!!!" and Gregg says "that's what you get"
awesome!!!
Duane says "You Guessed It" and repeats.
@@nedjohnson5200 I am SURE that guy remembers that moment forever....
I believe it was Duane, and he said, "I guess you guessed it"
Duane said "You guessed it", end of story
@@rameshnyberg2257 I heard "that's it. You guessed it".
I would trade anything and everything to have been alive and there for when this was recorded.
This has got to be the best dual guitar live song of all time. As a matter of fact, best dual guitar album period. Duane and Dickey played their tails off
Have this on Vinyl
I am starting to build my new house next year and can't wait to set up all my home stereo system again and break these out and play at night again, been raising kids for 23 years and it's been on the back burner except here on CZcams . wish me luck LOl

Cranked this up on my i-pod 10 years ago at the age of 60. Ran that 5k in 23:20 PBest. Thanks brothers. Thats 3.1 miles by the way.
It's amazing how anyone could give a thumps down. These guys were in their early twenties making music and having fun and had no idea they were on their way to making musical history. It's by the grace of God these 6 guys came together.
The Allman Brothers were an incredible band. No way in the world would I ever give them a thumps down.
Nickelback fans I figure.
Some might ask, though, why did that same God, if he exists, take Duane right at the peak of their fame and Berry not long after?
@@Arbeedubya because God didn't take Duane & Berry. But he didn't prevent it from happening, either.
Berry Oakley was SO underrated! He played better bass, than anyone's played in decades! Think about it!
The band was done when the two of them died.
Phil lesh
So true, Jack..listen to what he does on "Blue Sky" ..amazing skill and creativity, and still be able to blend with the other musicians
RITE ON!!!COPIED..NEVER MATCHED...
He'd play along with Duane and Betts guitar lines oppossed to playing along the drum beat. Incredible.
RIP Greg. Thanks for all the great music!
Every time I say Whipping Post is my favorite song. I qualify it by saying Live at the Fillmore East.
23 minutes of musical eargasm!
I was there, but in full disclosure, I had no idea who they were...i was just hanging with the crew and the Fillmore was that night's agenda.
Every time I think I've heard everything there is to here in this song, I discover one more nugget of gold! And I bet bet I've heard this version 500 times!
Duane Allman's solos are one of those things in life where you literally can't believe it, it's like i went insane and imagined the entire thing cuz there's no freakin way
This one quite perhaps the greatest ever...
Long live The Allman Bros. Actually bought this album new over 40 years ago! Been a huge fan since I was a teenager. Have seen them live three times. They are arguably the biggest musical influence in my life. They turned me on to Southern Rock and to the Blues. "One Way Out" inspired me to learn how to play the guitar in H.S. I now own three guitars: a Gibson SG, a Fender Strat and a Gibson acoustic. For you readers out there, my daughter got me Gregg Allman's autobiography "My Cross To Bear". A must read for the consummate Allman Bros fan.
saw em do this in SF in '70 and they couldn't stop playing so went on for another five minutes with crashing, end-of-the-world endings...I ben voodoo'd ever since...
were you at the Fillmore west with Charlie Daniels Band and Marshall Tucker Band as well? I was there also
Gives me goose bumps everytime...everytime...
RIP Mr. Allman, a true brother. I hope you saw some of those dreams during your remarkable run. Thank you.
Wow. Haven’t listened to this in awhile. This band is locked in. Then to go right into Mountain Jam may be the greatest 1 hour of music ever created.
I yell this out as a request when the choir gets ready to sing at Mass! Except on Good Friday!
I have some decorum!
A great song from what is IMO the best live album ever made.
Its been recorded as such in the archives ..national I think
Le meilleur album live de la musique rock. Cette chanson renferme plusieurs solos de guitare absolument magiques.
God .... sweet music.heart break.
The Brothers! I swear I got entire old punk albums shorter than this one track. This is one of those songs you just can’t stop.
I have it in my will that my funeral as follows: everyone walk in - this song from this album is played....loud - everyone leaves.....true story
I've never asked to attend anyone's funeral; however...
Pretty funny. I have Jimi's Have You Been to Electric Ladyland as my post-croak tune. Saw ABB in 70 in DC at Am Univ and then was one of the crazies who say them with The Dead at RFK stadium in 73. THAT was a cluster fuck of acid, ludes and dehydration. Had to wait till sun up to even THINK about leaving that mad house. Seemed like a lot of people there but I wasn't seeing much of them. No one was in control that day/night, least of all the players. Pretty funny memory. Cops were cool-they knew the place was lit up. Don't remember when they stopped playing but it seemed late in the evening.
Thats great! hahaha
If I find myself walking past a funeral home with this blaring I promise to drop in and pay my respects.
God Bless!
my absolute favorite moment starts at 20:48 , when the guitar makes these pained bends before slowly scaling down the neck like a tumbling snowball, building with intensity until the lowest note is reached & everything seems to fall apart. the second guitar makes those damaged squeals while the first sounds like an engine petering out, it’s absolutely incredible
I really love reading these commentaries, all good! Of course man!
Sonnez les marrines goddamn the South may have lost but y'all got the Allmans. I'm not religious by any stretch but this is as close to Heaven as one can get.
I had the supreme fortune to see Frank Zappa play an amazing cover of this in 1987.
No, The best live album ever!!!! ABB forever!!!!
Best album for Coronavirus quarantine day dreaming
This is, BY FAR, the very best version of Whipping Post.
Thank you so, so, much Gregg, Duane, Berry, Dickey, Butch & Jaimoe & JD and Red Dog and all the rest of the crew.
Without all of them, it wouldn't have happened. Thank you, Brothers! 🤘🙏❤️🎸
Just as the group was to take their second photo, Duane's dealer hands him a "special delivery" making the whole band burst in laughter as he hides it with both hands, out of lens.
This story always put a smile on my face
There is nothing you can say 2023😮😮😮😮
I had a spiritual awakening to this on a couple tabs. Never forget that night.
OMG, CRACK ME UP!
