    Had the same situation happened to me in college. At first it was all good and then he just treated the whole team like poop, except the 1st baseman. He made recial remarks to me and players of previous seasons. He even left me behind at a McDonald's and my teammates had to come get me. He was fired at the end of the year.

    You hit the nail on the head! Great example of what we try and teach little league players, playing and learning baseball is a great way of learning life lessons! Now hopefully at a little league stage a coach isn't too hard on them to make them wanna wait, gotta build them up at earlier ages, but warn them of what the future holds as they get older! Before you even mentioned it in the video I was thinking " well ya better try and deal with it the best you can so you learn how to cope with future bosses!". Great video!!

    Great advice Matt. Here's my story from college. My college coach was always comparing his current team to the guys who had graduated and the guys he was recruiting. His present squad was always found lacking. As in coach says, "You guys are dogs compared to the guys on the team two years ago. Now they were real men". And he would go on and on about how great they were. Or he would come into practice one day and say, "You better enjoy your time in the lineup this year, because we've just signed a guy tearing up Juco." Funny thing was, older guys were surprised when I showed up and wasn't superman, but after they graduated, (according to coach) they had achieved near All-American status. We learned not to take any of it personally and that he was trying to get the best out of us. One other thing to his credit, years later, whenever you would see him, or he would speak about you publicly, he always remembered your best moments and never told something that might be embarrassing for you.

      My son started playing travel ball as well at age 12. He's 16 now and starring on his HS team. He had an over the top coach during his 14U season, that was a former Division 1 player. And him and another kid got signaled out more. I just told my son to take it as a compliment. If your good, coaches tend to come down on you. He ended up having his best travel ball season for that coach. Happy trails.

    • @stephenvance4867
      @stephenvance4867 Před 6 lety +4

      I dont think it is quite so cut and dry. Example, my little brother is ruining about changing teams because his coaches only focus on batting practice which has cost the team at least 4 games this year and has hindered their development. My brother believes he has a real chance at playing college ball, but he will never get their playing for the current team he is on.

    • @johnjacob4973
      @johnjacob4973 Před 6 lety +1

      Stephen Vance oh yeah? How do you know the coach focusing on batting practice is for sure the reason it’s costed them 4 games? Probably should just stop making excuses

    • @stephenvance4867
      @stephenvance4867 Před 6 lety +3

      John Jacob I've been to each practice this season and only 3 have not been batting practice. On top of that, I've been to all but one game and watched them throw games away because they don't know what to do with the ball. The outfielders can't catch, yet they don't work on it in practice. Infielders can't field anything that isn't right at them and again, the coaches do not work on it in practice. On offence they have scored less than 5 runs only 3 times this season. Not to mention that on the rare occasions they practice in the field, no one is willing to help develop their catcher. The same catcher that the coach flat out said they would have lost every game without. And yes, that catcher is my brother. I may not a baseball coach, but I've played for many years and watched for even longer. I know baseball and I know bad coaching when I see it

    • @johnjacob4973
      @johnjacob4973 Před 6 lety +1

      Stephen Vance never said the coach isn’t bad, just said to stop making excuses. I’ve seen plenty of good players from bad teams go on to play college ball.

    • @stephenvance4867
      @stephenvance4867 Před 6 lety +3

      John Jacob you said nothing about college ball. You asked why I thought to much batting practice cost them games. As for playing college, I am well aware that the team around a player is not the sole factor in whether or not a player can play college ball, though standing out on a good team will definitely increase you chances. In my brother's case there are a few things against him. 1) He goes to a small school with barely any college exposure. That's not detrimental, but it can be a factor. 2) He gets nothing useful from practice because no one works with him. He just sits behind the plate a throws the ball back to the coach. As a result, he has not improved this year at all. He knows what he does from studying MLB catchers and applying it in game, but that can only carry you so far if you can't practice. 3) He's 8. He is still a raw talent that needs to be refined. The kid has talent, how far he can go is still anyone's guess, but he needs someone to help him improve his game. And I might have forgot to mention that he is the one who wants to switch because he wants to get better and doesn't believe he ever will while he is playing for his current team.

  • @waywardson1663
    @waywardson1663 Před 6 lety +1

    My first ever baseball coach only spent time with the kids whose parents were influential in the community and basically ignored the rest of us to the point where a lot of kids just ended up quitting. He lost an entire cohort one year because he had all the new players clean up the field after a smash up derby was held the weekend prior, so instead of these 8-9 year olds practicing, they spent two hours cleaning up jagged metal and glass off the field! Not many of them came back for the second practice. He was later fired by the town for doing coke in his office.
    I have had three hockey coaches who were banned from coaching ever again, one for bullying certain players, one for ordering us to injure opposing players (that guy basically ruined me), and my first high school coach was canned two months into the season for being drunk the entire trip for a road game. Best coaches I ever had were the ones who clearly set out their expectations of you and held everyone accountable, as that was what I found to be the best learning environment.

    Some good advice. Would have also liked to hear about drawing clear boundaries for what you will and just can't tolerate -- maybe coaches who are abusive or suggest cheating. Sometimes it's healthier to leave a bad situation and young people should be encouraged to identify those situations and act when they occur.

    I started playing at an old age (13 years) in comparison with all the teamates that i've have,through out my short career in baseball i had 3 coaches, the first one was a former mexican league baseball player, the issue that i had with that man was that he didn't taught me how to play the game, and he always pinned me down and i got out of the team, the in high school i had a douchebag as a coach, that man varely went to the training and we lost several games because he was to lazy to tell us, and at last my final coach was a guy like you, a former MLB player (Mexican) that taught me every thing that i now, he put me things somewhat hard but i learned to much and i'm thankful for that. To get to my point, those coaches that are hard as nails but teach you the ropes of the game, you're welcome and those who are not thank you to, because at least you teach me how to be tolerant with arrogant people (in collage i've met my fair share)

    I too have played for a lot of coaches I seen allot of different coaching styles.... However My 10 year old son is going through a very tough time, along with most his team mates with a new "professional" coach taking over his travel team. Coach makes comments like "your the stupidest thing with 2 legs", when kid makes a a mental error, he says things like" all this is on you, those runs and runners are because of you". Calls kids "knuckleheads", calls time when pitchers are walking people, goes out to them to yell about their performance and intimidate/ scare them to do better. Like saying" if you are going to play for me then you can't walk batters, you'll be on the bench if you can't perform". I feel he is scaring the boys to perform, instead of performing to win/help the team. In my opinion the coach is over the top and mentally damaging. My son is the best on the team, but gets anxiety before games and practices and when coach yells at him he says things like I'm not good at baseball. We are finishing the season with the coach for the team and as a learning and growing experience. However, I'm afraid my son is losing confidence and not enjoying playing to win and better himself. Instead he is playing not to mess up and not to get yelled at. Doesn't want to pitch anymore either. I have been encouraging him and helping him deal with feelings and emotions the coach causing, but it seams mentally abusive and detrimental to my son.... So after this season he will be moving on, which I believe is for the best and I'm proud of him for sticking with the team through the season. I am proud and take it as a win dealing with the coach and fighting through it, however I don't feel that sticking with this coach for the next 4 years is necessary and more hurting then helping, he has other options so we will explore those.

    Not every case is same. Tough coach is a very subjective thing. That being said, if it can ruin a potential"opportunity" (scholarship or chance to play for pay), that is different. Difference of opinion or not getting playing time is part of life. My college head coach was a monster of a jerk. He trested walk ons like crap. He just did not ignore us, but would spit tobacco at us and other potetially dangerous crap. I get it. There was no fjnancial investment and chances of us getting substantial PT was next to nill. But treating people with dignity should just be natural. And i am not talking about challenging players or correcting bad behavior or play.

I would like to know what’s your take on “playing with players from overseas” and how you communicate with them on the field? Was there any racial issues against them during that time?
    My story was when I first came to the States, played in a private school with 90% of students were caucasians. I remembered I was in my sophomore year in HS played at 2nd, the shortstop was yelling at me because I couldn’t fully understood what he said on the field. I actually got yelled from his dad too. And from the day on, the guy just never really talked to me and kinda hated me afterwards lol. Anyway, i didn’t like him neither so I guessed that evens out lol. Thanks~

      Growing up, you learn to play all of the positions fairly well. I was a catcher and all of the positions are fun and easy to become serviceable at. I found pitching very difficult to do in an actual game. It's easy to screw around in practice, but it's another to take the mound in a game.

      Jqy Feather Its funny, I was just talking to a friend about this because of Ovechkin looking like a jackass throwing the first pitch. I'm amazed at how many professional athletes I have seen, who look like disabled children playing outside of their sport. When I was a kid, you were either athletic or you were not. I'm not a professional QB, but I don't look like a complete jackass throwing a football. I went to a celebrity softball game put on by the Ravens, years ago, and outside of like 4 players, I was completely SHOCKED at how uncoordinated these professional football players were, at playing softball. But anyway, that was a long winded way of saying that, at least I thought, you are usually athletically versitile inside the confines of your sport.

The next year he did something else outrageous, and then he and the school “mutually decided he should leave.” So yeah, it does happen.

      I would say that calls for leaving the team...although the coach is going first. Thanks for watching!

    Everyone that is asking "what if the coach touches me funny" or some variant of it, call the cops, tell your parents or another authority figure. Dont just run away and let that person off the hook! Im guessing some of these are trolls but if its actually happening I dont think Matt is the person to be asking this.

    My high school coach (if you got on his bad side, which I rarely did) he would take the hat off his head and "beat you with it"... I thought it was weird at the time but - I think in hindsight he was just trying to motivate guys that may have not been playing up to their potential .... I mean it was a hat.... Although I will say that little button thing on the top of the hat kinda hurt... Whatever...... My coach in high school was easy going if you played hard but if he thought you didn't put 100% into the play regardless of the outcome - oh, "you're getting the hat" lol..

      You got "the hat" too? lol
      I played high school ball in Chicago in the mid-90's. Yea, my HS coach was kinda goofy like that - a pretty eccentric dude actually, former minor league ball player in the 60's, was part of the White Sox & Indian's organizations at some point and a few other teams.. But hey, he was a good coach, taught us a lot about the game.. You had to play 100% or not play at all.. He didn't like "slackers" lol.. You hit a pop-up and you run hard like dogs are chasing you or "you get the hat".... Yea, good times. I got drafted under him (never signed) so, he did something right...

      It's only assault if you want it to be.... Half of the damn team deserved it..... So what my coach hit me with a hat in 1996... It's a hat you idiot..... You SJW "trophy generation types" suck.. Back in my day there was only ONE trophy..... You win or you don't.... Sometimes you need a hat across the top of your head to remind you of that..... Don't tell me what assault is of good coaching - because intent matters - "the hat" meant nothing more than play harder or you made a tremendous mistake...

      If it matters that hat got me drafted.... I wasn't MLB material - but I played hard - 100%... And baseball wasn't my #1 sport, I'm a hockey player first and foremost - I'm a bottom 6 because that's were the game is played... I'm not a professional but my HS coach taught us the basics- how to play baseball and a great coach can make the best of it - regardless of your sport.....Assault my ass.

    Did you know the college coach was going to be a jerk before getting there? I know in college football many players will really get to know their coaches before accepting an offer.
    Unrelated, but I know you were a junior when you got drafted, did you already graduate when you left?

    Depends on the situation. The era of abusive coaching needs to go away. You're bound to run into an abusive coach at some point. They often aren't able to see that they're being abusive because they were able to deal with it when they were coming up. Not everyone is able to deal with it to that level. There's a point where being tough on people to build character becomes too much.
    Putting up with abusive coaches doesn't have to be part of the game.

    It is kind of annoying, as an aside, when people talk about how a hyper-competitive or hyper-perfectionist style is a good thing. Some of the toughest coaches are also "legends of the game". I don't really know how I feel about it. Like everything, it's a spectrum.

    Going to have to disagree with you on this. We are talking about ADULTS and CHILDREN. It is different if you are in college or in the pros. You are considered an adult.
    The coach of my high school baseball team was a basketball coach. Used to run on the field and scream at players that they sucked. Used homophobic and racial slurs constantly. Finally after 20 years was removed from his teaching post and lost his teaching license permanently.
    Tolerating ABUSE as a child is not a thing. It is up to the ADULTS around to stop the abuse from happening. A shitty coach early in life can ruin a career. Without question. We were just kids.

    Only if the coach corrects you playing under his construct, to the best of your ability, can you address the matter. Even under those unlikely circumstances, you can only address playing to the best of your ability. To question his construct may limit your playing time, which is an audition everytime until you are retired.
