  • Halo is no stranger to amazing music, however there's one track that always hits different. It's become associated with our memories of Halo 3, and the many fun times we had playing it with friends, family and that one squeaker who just wouldn't stop talking about how he got Hayabussa. I'm of course talking about 'Never Forget'.

Everyone was always ready to to spend all day in it, gathering up as many people as possible for custom games. the year is 2013, I'm 8 years old and I'm at GameStop with my grandma getting Pokémon cards. As I head to get in line, I noticed a guy in line holding a copy of halo 3. I'd just gotten an Xbox and I'd never been allowed to play fps games so I'd play call of duty at my cousins house on ps3. "WOW, Is that halo 3?" I asked. "Yeah it is." he said. Then he did something I'll never forget. He took a look at the game, and then a look at me. He reached his arm out to hand me the game and said "Hey kid, you want it?". Looking back, he was there to turn in the game since halo 4 came out a year earlier but this was my first fps game and the first game I played on Xbox live. I'll never forget playing forge with my friends on sand trap or the first time I saw the flood in campaign, or how cool it was to be on the same team as elites. This game will always be my favorite game and I couldn't be more grateful for that stranger in GameStop.

I always did find it really interesting how Never Forget became a track associated to everyone's memories of Halo 3, rather then like the Main theme or One Final Effort or something. Its definitely gotta be because of how its never heard in the campaign, there's no scene for anyone to connect it to. Because its only heard in the main menu, people don't associate it with any scene in particular but rather the Halo 3 experience as a whole. As a result this track has pretty much become the main theme to this game because of what it represents to people that played this game back in the day.

I remember getting off the school bus, walking over to my friends house, then we both walked over to my house, sat down on the couch and booted up halo three. Never forget would subtly play in the background as we set up our obstacle course map that we made in forge. That was then… Today the track means so much more to me. It reminds me of not only how my childhood used to be, but how Halo used to be. It’s a golden era that’s long past. epic memorable set pieces and emotional highs of the campaign, The chaotic laid-back fun of split screen multiplayer, The beautiful art and music, mysterious and deep lore, grinding for achievements to get a unique piece of armor… all those things that used to make halo so special, we will never forget.

When I hear “never forget” I don’t only think about the memories but the meaning of the song in the game. Humanity believed they’ve lost the war and are gonna go extinct in a horrific way but through sheer luck and the sacrifices of our heroes, humanity lives on in the end. Never forget implies to always remember the lives lost and the darkest days humanity went through to see a brighter future that we humanity gets to live now and in the future, fiction or in real life.

What I love about halo and make it such a unique series to me is that the game story and music go hand and hand, like the music does the story telling alot of the time many time in halo we just get no dialogue and the music is conveying the emotion of a scene and its like perfectly synched as well, kats death stand out to me, odst music, the bomb scene, halo 3 chief and cortana meeting again. I think this is the biggest thing the new games miss cause the new games tell their story through alot of dialogue where as the old games did it through the music, art, and character movements alot, youll never hear someone in old halo say "i am sad." The newer music is just good music that doesnt really fit with whats going on, that synch the old games had idk if we will ever see again, maybe in destiny not halo, the closet theyve ever gotten to this is infinite but even then not by much.

I used to just leave my game in the main menu and listen to the music soothe my soul and make every day a little better. That game and that song just meant more to me, it meant more to all of us. It’s memories of us spent grinding our teeth on the challenges so we could get the hayabusa armor, it’s living what we thought was the final game in the series all over again. We played so so so much Halo 3 together in online matchmaking, thousands of games. I remember liking Halo 2 and wanting so much to play 3 that I sold my Xbox and all my games and asking for my Birthday and Christmas presents to be fused as one to afford a 360 and Halo 3 almost on release day, then coming home and playing the all the campaign until I finished it at 3 am, playing on Heroic and Legendary, finally begging my parents for weeks to get broadband bandwith internet to play online, sitting there listening to the menu and having a lot of fun.
"Hi! Excuse me, do you play Halo?, we're going to play a few matches, maybe you want to play with us?" The words someone told me in highschool in 2008, an he and his friends became my best friends (almost brothers) until this day. We spent our two last highschool years playing Halo 3 splitscreen every weekend in each others houses, Lan parties with 8, 10 even 16 people, playing sometimes even on week days on a xbox rental place after school, then online until 3 or 4 am. Trying ranked and getting demolished, fiesta, tons of custom matches, holding our laughters so our parents didnt wake up and scolded us. We continued regularly on ODST, Reach and 4.
Highscool ended, we went to college to study different things, and after some time, our paths had gone separate ways, but even now we see each other on everyones birthdays, have fun and, every now and then, play TMCC online to have a good time.

My first halo game was Halo Combat Evolved. I played it with my dad, and I remember we used to get in warthogs and ram them into each other until one of us flipped. My perspective on halo seems different to some others. I am 16, and the first halo I played after I got my own Xbox was Halo 5. I remember it feeling "off". It wasn't fun, but sweaty. The campaign was weird and I had no idea what was going on. This was when I'd noticed on CZcams that many halo fans hated the game. Many halo fans hated 343i. The others would rant about their disappointment with the new game and how it didn't reach the expectations of previous halos from the "glory days" of which I could never know. It made me feel frustrated. "Why did I enter this franchise when everyone hated it and why couldn't I have been there during the good days?" I don't feel that way right now. This video has made me realize that it was never about disappointing devs or what "Halo truly is". It was always about the awesome people who all share the fact that they love this franchise. After halo 5 I'd finally played the MCC and I LOVED IT! I finally understood why everyone really liked these games, (Reach is my favorite because of its awesome story and firefight btw) but it always felt like the social aspect was missing. I get nervous with people and it made me scared to try and talk to other halo fans. After this video, maybe I'll try harder to find people. Being a teenager has not been fun for me, and halo has helped me through that. This community is like a big dysfunctional family in a way, and it will never fade considering 10 years of disappointment couldn't do it. If you made it this far then I think you're awesome and it makes me feel a little better about posting this. Anyway, where does he get off calling that a priority on-

How ironic in a good way that one of the most memorable memorable tracks was given it's name because the two legends forgot to put it in, but has given so much meaning to so many things for different people.
Never Forget reminds me of the days I was a young late teen, playing in a time that would be the final years of what I call the golden era of video game music, a time when a lot of things were better In gaming (not saying things are all bad in gaming, there's still great games and music in those games, but there's nothing as iconic as the themes of many games I played between 2001-2012), there was a hopeful future for Halo, but also a finality at the time whn Halo had reached the peak of legendary status in sci fi not far from Star Wars, when Halo had become synonymous with Xbox as Call of Duty is today with first person shooters. It was a goodbye to what was then the Master chief and Cortana, but also a celebration of Halo when it was at it's best as far as we knew at the time.
I joined loving Halo a little later than that peak. Reach had come out when I really lstarted making Halo a favorite game. I liked it since Halo 2, but more casually up to that point. Now though. Halo 2 is my favorite game in the series after playing Halo 1-4 more than once over a decade, but Halo 3 is undoubted the height of Halo's success that it went on for more than a decade, thankfully preserved in the MCC.
To me, the track is the theme of Cortana and Chief's friendship and bond, but also that of Halo at it's best, and one that also was the childhood of so many. I didn't have that connection most of you guys had in multiplayer, as i'm still the only person I know in my local life that loves Halo. It sucks but yeah lol. Was more shy as a kid/ older teen too.
Never forget is like the Force theme of Star Wars for me, though that one is a bit more hopeful. It's now a reminder that Halo had it's golden age, but also a reminder that Halo could have another one. Happy anniversary Halo 3.

I was born just a month before Halo 3’s release, so I never had any of those experiences with friends like most other Halo fans did. I never even played the series until my dad let me play Halo 5 when I was 8. The game was fun, and being 8, I didn’t really get much about the game except that Master Chief was cool. I wanted to play the original game, so my dad and I played through Combat Evolved, and we did it in just 2 days. We started on Halo 2, but he deployed for a long time before we could start playing the Arbiter levels, so I figured I’d do it myself. And I was now around 10 at this time, so I understood the game much more than I would have had I played when I was 8.
But once I had to go to the bathroom while on the menu, and when I came back, Unforgotten was playing. It stuck in my mind just as much as the main Halo theme from Combat Evolved. After the song ended, I jumped into the game and started stabbing heretics. I remember being so excited to get to use the energy sword that I didn’t use any other weapon, sometimes to my own detriment. When I started ODST around 12, it was a brand-new experience that quickly became my favorite. I still play ODST Firefight to this day. But now, 5 years later, I’m seeing all the memories people made with this game that I missed out on. When everyone thought Halo was back around Infinite’s release, I was beyond excited to finally experience the real Halo authentically. And I was disappointed. Infinite’s player count dropped within a week. My friend and I have been playing a lot of Halo lately; I got him into the series a year ago and we started playing CE. But we haven’t found much time to do stuff because of school, so we haven’t even gotten to Halo 2 yet.
But playing Halo alone just feels empty because of that, and I don’t really enjoy it that much. Most of my interactions with the series are on Spotify, which brings me back to Never Forget. It’s a song that’s stuck with me since my solo Halo 2 days, which gave it an extra meaning for me that feels like my own. To me, the song represents… well, me. I played through Halo 2 alone, and when the song played, it reminded me that only I had my back. At least, apart from the Elites. When I played alone, it felt like those Elites were my allies, and I was actually fighting alongside them. And whenever I listen to the song on Spotify, I think of the milestones I’ve reached and the ones I’m yet to achieve. I’m at the beginning of my life; here’s to hoping I don’t fuck it up. And if I do, I’ll never forget the time before I did.

I didn't have a 360 but was always at my friend's house playing halo 3 with him. For whatever reason we'd spent much more time in the customs lobby trash talking than actually playing. Halo 3 customs makes up some of the only positive memories I have from my childhood. This lobby music is the theme song to my happy childhood memories that I will Never Forget.

I remember booting up the 360 and popping the halo 3 disk in. The mythical bungie intro playing... and then BAM! Never forget and the menu with its iconic blue filter playing. The halo games always had this way of going ham with the intro and then going somber to the menu. I will never forget what halo once was.

As for most nostalgic soundtracks i think halo and classic sonic are at the top of my list. There are more games that has nostalgic soundtracks but those two are always the first that comes to mind for me.

Waiting for my friends to show up any minute, H3 already fired up. Over 1 million (at release 1.5 million) players lit up the world map. I was the only one who had a decent u shaped living room for 5-6 people. So everyday at around 7 pm min. 3 friends showed up at my place and we all hopped into 4 player splitscreen teamslayer. First only one friend, he told the other and at times my couch was packed, i got 'em all hooked 😆 Suroundsound on full blast till 10pm weekdays and all weekend through. So much fun i never forget. These days we dont see each other anymore. So that track hits even harder im sure you all understand...

You really have no idea how much I’ve wondered if I was alone throughout the years in having this song hold such a special place in my heart. I’m instantly transported back to the time between Christmas 2007 and New Year’s Eve. My grandparents would always come up to see us in Sacramento from San Jose but this time, my grandfather who didn’t speak a lick of English sat down and watched me play Halo 3 while my parents were at work. He was enthralled by it. It takes me back to when all the homies were always online before they became dormant accounts. Back when my sister and I would wake up during the summer of 2008 and play the campaign countless times while my parents were at work between airings or Flapjack and Chowder. This song is my childhood as well as everyone and everything that happened during that time. Thank you Bungie, especially Marin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori.

I'm extremely happy that I was given the opportunity to play halo 3 as a kid. It hurts to go back and play some of these things, and you're absolutely right that listening to some of these songs brings tears to my eyes.
It's so sad that 343i has... lets be honest, ruined the modern franchise. But i'm glad Bungie has carried the torch Halo created into Destiny, and am proud to be a fan of their new creation.
I doubt 343 will do anything for its 15th anniversary, but one can hope an anniversary edition will be made to at least allow newer players to experience such a wonderful series in a new way.

You know, while watching this video a thought popped into my head. As someone who still regularly plays the old halos, I think it might be best to stop playing them. Shouldn't I just let memories be memories, instead of trying to relive the memories, which in turn, fades them more and more each time I hop on mcc again? Maybe I should let go of trying to relive my memories to keep them special. It's sad, sure, but at the same time maybe reminiscing won't be as painful if I give up trying to relive the days of old.

Halfway through so not sure if you'll mention this, but in halo reach never forget was also used. At the beginning of the song/intro cutscene for exodus, it plays a short variation and extends upon it in a really beautiful way. It's a very light use of never forget but always really hits hard for me as noble six holds the dog tags and has to continue forward.
