HALO | 20 Years of Music (Epic Piano Orchestral Cover)

- November 15th, 2001 was the day that video games changed forever. With the release of Halo: Combat Evolved, Xbox had found it’s killer app and from it, came a whole new franchise of games with an amazing soundtrack to boot. This is my tribute to the series and the many composers who contributed to the Halo games over the last two decades and their brilliant work creating some of the most inspiring, emotive, and unforgettable pieces of music. This cover includes pieces from every Halo game - from the iconic Halo Theme featured in the first three games and it’s rockified cover performed by legendary guitarist Steve Vai, to 117 from Halo 4, Spirit of Fire from the Halo Wars series, Finale from Halo 3 ODST, Overture from Halo Reach, Blue Team from Halo 5 and much, much more. See if you can pinpoint all the references to other songs! There’s plenty of cheeky samples from some of the original tracks as well. And while it's not completely accurate in all parts, I blame my laziness of learning it all by ear and not bothering to find accurate sheet music.
This one goes out to Halo’s amazing fanbase and community - the people who have stood by this series through thick and thin. The talented developers from Bungie, 343 Industries, Certain Affinity and the many other studios who have contributed to the franchise, and because I couldn’t fit it in the video, to Marty O’Donnell, Michael Salvatori, Nile Rogers, Stephen Rippy, Neil Davidge, Kazuma Jinnouchi, Tom Salta, and the many, many others who helped to create the amazing music in these games. I would gladly wash your cars free of charge if it meant sharing a beer and having a chat afterwards. Thanks for 20 years of awesome music, and here’s to the next 20 as we welcome in Halo Infinite to the world in just a few weeks!
I do not own this music; all rights go to their respective owners and licensees.

Uploaded a little later than I wanted, but we got there eventually. Let’s get these 20th birthday celebrations started the way Sergeant Johnson would’ve wanted - with a bang!
This is easily the most ambitious creative undertaking I’ve done in a while, so I hope you lads all enjoy it. And please share this around!
Fucking amazing man. That ambition certainly has paid off, and I’m damn well gonna share this to a friend of mine.
i’m commenting this on my 7th or 8th time watching this video (hell maybe even more i’ve watched it so much i’ve lost count), and this vid perfectly captures the power of halo’s different music, and i love it so, so much. congrats on making such an amazing piece, i can’t wait to see what you do next cause holy shit it’s gonna rock
also the finale of this video is fucking hype
I find you by your breakdown of the Cortana mission and now I find out you're a fellow muso? Too damn good
Can you please put this on Spotify?!? I would kill a whole army of Hunters to have this on Spotify!!! Also that transition into Spirit of Fire is perfect.👌
Scratch that all the transitions are Bloody Perfect! But I like the Spirit of Fire a little more.
What can I say? It was a hell of a piece.
Wow! Marty you're here!
The musical god has spoken !!!!!!!!
You know the music, time to dance.
Thank you for your amazing music Marty.
Hell ya it is
It was indeed
Now I won't die in peace without a version of this on a live orchestra.
Halo Reach's entire score really captures that loss and hope feeling. It embodies the wonder of Reach and it's people. It carries the sound of the soldiers who fought bravely to defend their home. Though they may be gone, their courage still sails the frosty winds of Reach's great peaks.
Remember Reach
Damn I'm gonna make myself cry lol
your making me cry XD
🔥
The King approves ❤️
People always say how the music in Reach feels extremely industrial and different in the sense that you can feel impending doom, but only in this cover did I really felt how scary, jarring, and hopeless the music in Reach was.
It's a completely different vibe from the other games, that's for sure. And it just gets more and more hopeless and depressing as the game goes on. Part of the reason I love it so much.
oh man that snippet from Rachmaninoff at 4:23 is PERFECT!
Oh damn, I didn't realise that the music from ODST shared some similarities to Prelude in C Sharp Minor! Good ear!
@@LaperLarden haha and I didn't know that motif was in ODST
@@Woolie It's all over the game. It's sorta the rookie's little ditty.
Same tbh
A G# C#!!!
Honestly halo was the first game I played thinking the music was just as good as any major blockbuster movie.
Honestly better. No movie soundtrack ever hit me this hard emotionally, though some did come close
@@uthergoodman401 Up there with Space Operas we all think of as gamers and movie watchers. Star Wars, Mass Effect, and Halo all are better than your average cinematic soundtrack.
@@aauwhatitdo1582 True indeed
@@aauwhatitdo1582 Intersteller has a great one
@@tnt_master6986 One of my favorites, it is a bit of a sticky one though because I could never play a good version of the main theme on piano 😂 The left hand was killer.
"You know the music time to dance" came up right as I wondered where ODST was. I punched the air this has me so hyped! My 2010 self thanks you and has made you a sweater of tears.
"Don't Make a Girl a Promise"
That hit like a car
This is fire🔥
Don’t Make a Girl a Promise hits HARD. The hopeless, distant reverb piano along with the dialogue almost brought me to tears.
The new melody at the end of To Heroes Fallen is a beautiful new take on Unforgotten.
And the ending is just insane. You’ve got mad keyboard skills!
Thank you so much man! I will say, it's been a long time coming and I've been wanting to release this to the world for months now. So to finally have it out and seeing people enjoy it, even other content creators that I look up to, it's been awesome!
This entire video made me semi cry
I play mcc and infinite
I didn't realise I could feel so many emotions at once. Wow. I'm speechless. This must have took so much work.
Tbh, I'm not the biggest fan of Reach, but when that Reach theme hits.... it hits hard
As someone whose been following your vids almost since day 1, this is the best thing you've done yet. You made this mid 30 yr old man cry like a bitch during that never forget part and then head banging like a lunatic for the end. Took me right back to the glory days, and for that, I can't thank you enough.
What a time to be alive, where even "normal" folks can make and share stuff that makes so many of us feel the same great things.
Let me put you at 117 likes for a time my friend.
Unreal how much of an impact Halo has had on popular culture. Never ceases to amaze me.
@@lloyd9500it's just a shame that 343, the company intended to be managed, maintained, and producing halo post reach gave us just CoD but in power armor.
The torch was passed, and promptly fumbled.
I burst into tears when the theme song came on.
Not Only the combat, but the music has also Evolved.
spartans never die they only disappear in combat ...
remember reach and the fallen heroes
Halo 20th anniversary this is just beginning ...
That was absolutely phenomenal, and with praise from O'Donnell himself, I don't think it could've been any better. In fact, it's so good the only person to dislike is the prophet of truth
The ending is absolutely fantastic I can’t even describe i felt like I was transcending into another dimension
My friends are starting to get into Halo, and I'm always explaining bits of the series to them, now I can just send them this and say "this is Halo"
It might be a bit of a sensory overload, but hopefully they'll like it!
Such an incredible and timeless piece.
Green and Blue hits harder here than it did for me when first playing H4.
Why we love Halo? Well, its our history'. And soon...
Our legacy.
Because we are just getting started.
If the covenant want to wipe out this part of my history.... I WON'T LET 'EM
Halo will always have special place in my heart and mostly because of marty's and michaels music.
Hell. Yes. That was a masterpiece, starting off the way it did only to transition into the sadness of "shes gone, sir" only to come back with more energy than ever, because we're "finishing this fight"!
This is perhaps the greatest Halo soundtrack compilation I’ve ever heard…
I LOVE THIS THE SONGS THE CENTIMATICS I LOVE FINSHING THE FIGHT HAS ALOT OF SETBACKS AND MEMORIES THAT MAKE ME CRIE
I revisit this masterpiece.. OFTEN. Deserves way more credit than it's given. Tear jerking moments every single fucking time I watch it. An artist.
I didnt see "Never Forget" from Halo 3 coming and now im in tears, it is one of my all time favorite songs so I was very happy to see it included.
Alright Im sold, and subbing
The fact that this guy snuck the sound from "Heretic, Hero" into the main Halo theme is fantastic.
Halo wars had such amazing music for the budget they were running on. Great piece.
We got this gem the same day we got Infinite. Nov 15 2021 was amazing.
The difference between halo and any other franchise is that halo feels real, the music and story are hands down, after all those years, still the best of the best imo.
This is the best memorial of all the saga
No video has ever made me feel the way I’m feeling now.
When this banger goes off in the club everybody finds the closest elite and beats him up
I’ve never heard a piece of music that made me laugh, hope, and full on sob for a time that seems long forgotten
I actually started crying during green and blue and then again with unforgoten
When I die I want this cover played at my funeral
That's gonna be a long funeral!
And those who attend will understand why
Unbelievably excellent pls put this on Spotify so I can listen to it all the time and put it alongside all the songs in my halo playlist because that is where this belongs
I think there might be some conflicting legal issues when it comes to publishing this on Spotify, but I'll look into it and see what I can do!
@@LaperLarden I'd definitely listen to it daily if it was on spotify, there are plenty of covers on there so this might count
@@LaperLarden pls give us an update
You can't just hit me with that high note at 12:37 ! that singlehandedly made me cry!
amazing job
Couldn't help but close my eyes and be engulfed by this masterpiece.
Never teared up from music before hearing this
Holy shit. This has effectively left me speechless. And crying. Tears. This is honestly hands down THE best community created Halo content I've ever seen. This needs to be shown somewhere big, and officially. Holy shit. Just wow...
Halo Infinite FINALLY got released today so i wanted to look back at my favorite video on this site.
This one STILL kicks major ass.
H2's "Unyielding" was one of the first songs I learned on the piano, and it was the reason I took an interest in music in the first place, so hearing that was a special treat!
Using 117 and ESPECIALLY Green and Blue was also an insane moment, as those are the real tear jerkers for me.
Also, using "Covenant Dance" as the bassline for Halo Wars' theme is just PEAK.
Once again, thanks for this vid! Always get teary eyed hearing this one!
Someone finally noticed Covenant Dance during the Halo Wars bit! You have no idea how long I've been waiting for someone to notice that 😂
12 dislikes? Who the hell would dislike such a beautiful master piece? Or should I say... Master Chief...?
The covenant
I Didn't know before now that I could have goosebumps for almost 20min straight! Let's replay it to see if I can't make that 40min of goosebumps and tears XD
That ODST part was so poppin'.
It's like I just watched a whole ass show!
Never forget was beautiful, I’m gonna cry 😭
20 years and yet I’m still playing even tho I’m young
Made me cry like a baby, so many memories.
Mid roll ads definitely ruined a lot of it, but you deserve to have them
Unfortunately that's not me putting those there. Got hit with a copyright strike from two real obscure companies that apparently own the rights to the Halo theme...? Which is odd.
@@LaperLarden they're full of shit bro, but unfortunately CZcams will never fix this broken ass system that fucks creators in the ass
This was. This was fucking beautiful. You hit all of my emotions in this. This is the single greatest tribute to halo EVER. That little bit where it showed all the major deaths in the games was such a gut punch, and the emotional build up with the music and then I heard Johnson again,"send me out, with a bang" I ugly cried for a second there. I ain't even ashamed. This hit me in all the right ways. This is halo. This was so beautiful and well crafted. Thank you.
This might be the greatest piece of music I've heard on CZcams. It genuinely made me emotional at times and the way you combined not only the themes but the musical ideas was spectacular. Thank you for creating this musical love letter to my favorite franchise, I'm gonna listen to this an unhealthy amount of times.
This needs to be on spotify
While listening to this who remembers the good old days coming home from school or work to play halo with your buddies.
Halo is an amazing story. At the end of it all, though, it's a tragedy.
What other word could possibly describe a tale of so much sacrifice?
hella underrated. LIKE THIS PPL GET IT ON THE ALGORITHM
Great video, really makes you re-appreciate the Halo magic. 20 years now, it's crazy how time seems to fly by. In case you missed it, Marty O'Donnell himself shared this video too (also commented).
Beginning of “Feet First Into Hell” at 4:22 is a direct quote from Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C# Minor lmao
Amazing stuff here!!
I just found your channel (thanks to Marty), and the quality of your videos is fantastic; I was blown away when I saw you had just started and haven’t released many videos yet, you deserve to be amongst the pantheon of halo content creators. It’s a crime you have as few subscribers as you do.
As for your content, it’s well researched, written, edited, and so on, no complaints…what I really like, however, are the stances that you take; you don’t seem to be part of this positive echo chamber surrounding halo infinite. Although I agree, there are parts of the game deserving of praise, your present very valid critiques I’m relived to hear.
I also love the fact that you see halo 4 for what it is. My first halo game was halo 3, and reach gave me some of my favorite childhood memories… but you said it best: halo 4 was MY halo game, the right place and the right time in my life.
All that being said, I subscribed instantly and I look forward to what you put out. I truly hope you see the success that you deserve.
I fell asleep watching a playlist with this in it and woke up in the middle of this. All I remember was not being able to breathe. By body was not ready for this and I went into shock due to all the nostalgia.
Fantastic recreation of all of these pieces.
For a moment there, I thought some noob with a piano is going to ruin it. Boy was I wrong. Truly brings a new perspective, truly enhances every feeling of that mission. Truly a masterpiece
Beyond epic and the flashback during Green and Blue/Unforgotten broke me.
Man, im glad I grew up with this series, the ending made me remember a lot of childhood things, and heres to many more.
Man went to town to flex his piano
I’m not crying *sniffs* you’re crying. This was incredible. I felt so many emotions watching and listening to this beautiful video. You really are talented and I am glad to have subscribed and been apart of this wonderful community.
No matter what modern halo is like, we'll alway stick to halo, because we are a passionate community. I don't care what the games are like, I play them regardless. Because I love halo. Dead or not, halo will remain halo. And I'll love it no matter what. This was great thought, especially "Never forget"
BEST HOMAGE TO THE HALO SERIE! 💚❤💚 PS. START OF CORTANA PART I CAN'T HOLD THE CRY! THE FEEL OF ALL LOSTS FOR THE PRICE OF THE VICTORY.....AAAH GOD!!! GREAT JOB!
oh man the feels during "to heroes fallen" i actually shed a tear during johnsson's "send me out with a bang". beautifully done sir.
Here I am, 32 years old.
Tearing up at this.
Beautiful work
It’s one year since this came out. I’m a different person than I was freshman year. This almost made me cry, especially the Halo 4 part.
As a dedicated viewer of this channel, I can't understand how I've missed this absolutely stunning masterpiece. This better be on Spotify, so I can add it to my Halo collection
I've had some difficulties with uploading it to Spotify, unfortunately. I also really want to remaster this piece, as the mix is pretty 'muddy' for lack of a better word. It's just the matter of finding the time (or someone professional) to do it!
God… that Halo 4 part put me into tears.
7:37 that moment has always given me shivers and you somehow made it better
well ive watched this video over 5 times... and almost cried every time... o forget how much halo was apart of my life... and even now my dumb programming team is called halo... lmao everyone older then me adapting there name... wish Marty knew how much his passion influenced people/.//
God you made me cry all the memories with my brother and sis I remember when I was younger I was scared of the flood so my big brother would have to come help me with those missions coz I was as scared as the marines but then as I got older I remember protecting my sister the same way
Oh my God...I shed some tears, this was beautiful.
11:11 that hit so hard dude, well done
Perfect when paired with the early release of halo infinite to celebrate our 20 year anniversary.
I'm playing this before campain launch for infinite!! 🔥🔥🔥
Wow... just wow.
Halo music is very important. It's the flagship brand that makes Halo so iconic, so recognizable, so unique; the demonstration that a game does not only need a good gameplay to be good and transcendental. Halo with its characters, its environment, its history, its design, its gameplay, the music and how everything is combined and interconnected to make the most immersive and innovative experience possible.
20 years of this great franchise. And 20 more years to come.
And thank you Marty O'donnell, not only for creating one of the most beautiful soundtracks ever, if not, part of my childhood with it.
Great job Laper Larden. This is really amazing.
I can remember wanting to go on car trips with my parents all the time, just so I had the excuse to listen to the Halo soundtracks. This music shaped my interests and tastes as a musician a lot. Big ups to Marty, he's a living legend.
I can't believe i missed this, but i certainly won't be forgetting it.
"How many time you wanna listen to this"?
"Yes"
The spine chills this gave me is ony parelleled by the first time I played the Halo 3 warthog run. So much nostalgia in one video is incredible, thank you for finishing this fight Laper Larden.
Guaranteed way to set a fire in your heart spartan! Masterful job!
My mind was blown after all of that, I had to sit there for 5 minutes and take in what I had heard. It was just jaw dropping, emotional, nostalgic, electrifying and incredible!!! 🤯🤯🤯
Halo is important
As a lifelong fan of this amazing universe, thank you for what you have done in the name of loving and talking about the godlike music of this series! I was 11 years old when my dad, rest his soul, got me the original console with Halo CE. The very first time I loaded up the game and heard the main theme set to the godly scene of the Halo ring spinning next to Treshold, I was in love, and have been ever since. What a journey it has been so far, and here's to the next 20 years!
What a beautiful Mashup of one of the most memorable soundtracks. Thank you for this! I got chills with every transition! Happy belated birthday, Halo! And a shout out to the amazing talents that gave us these amazing pieces of music!💚
What can I said it was a hell of a night.
you won lol. this is the best halo musical tribute that has ever been and will be made. (unless you make a second one later down the line)
This is a summary of Halo. The way you did everything feels like I'm playing Halo all over again. The way you blended the voice overs and music together is perfect. They should've hired you to do that TV show.
The restatement of the ascending piano melody at the end of "Welcome to reach" hits
this deserves 1,000,000+ views
this was fucking awesome
That was excellent 👌👍👍
I added it to my watch later list, and was going to just check the intro to make sure I liked it... I'd swear it was only 5 minutes but now it's ended and my heart is pounding!
Well done 👏👏👏👏
Holy crap... "To Heroes Fallen" hit way harder than I expected. This is whole vid is beautiful. But damn it hurts so bad in a good way. Eras we can't go back to as we go forward. Wonderfully done.
The second you started reloading the keytar I knew we were in for an epic finish. Something about the ODST theme sliding into the Reach theme on the keytar alongside the Steve Vai just hit so hard man. Great work!
Thanks man! It amazed me while editing it too how well the Steve Vai stuff worked over what I had already done. Initially it was just supposed to be the Keytar but after messing around with it for a while, I couldn't not include it!
I don't usually comment but this shit right here, ugh, is the GREATEST tribute to Halo I've had the chance to hear. This invoked so many emotions and memories I was glad to have relived with this piece. The tears are definitely flowing. This deserves the love and much more. The hard work shows thru every note, the mixing, the visuals. And on top of it Martin O'Donnell giving his blessing is incredible man. I give you a long round of applause for this piece you have made here. Here's to another 20 years fellow spartans. LETS FINISH THIS FIGHT! TOGETHER!
That never forget gave me a bunch of goosebumps and the send me out with a bang and with the piano cutting in nearly made me burst into tears
Edit: if anything with the 360 servers shut down the never forget makes us reminisce over all the memories we all made and how halo has changed us all!!
