    7:00 I'm almost positive he was trying to turn left, but because there were cars coming in the opposite direction, he had to stop. You can barely see more cars coming when the camera starts to turn towards his face. There's also a double arrow on the road indicating its a turn left or go straight lane.

      I would have slowed down for the pedestrian. 7:23 Even if I had a green light, she stood close to the road.
      By the way, this is the only type of accident I have had in the last 30 years riding a bike. I stopped at the stop sign, but the rider behind me did not (learner permit). I stopped at the crossing, but the car did not, pushing me forward (this second time, I did not even fall, no damage). Proper gear even 30C deg. No injuries.

Low and behold the biker pulls out and runs wide passing double yellow into my lane and I had to swerve to avoid him. Saved my car and saved his life, he was t shirt/ shorts on a harley.

    1:12 there's a cruiser saying he seemingly has a lot of space but doesn't want to lock up the rear brake.
    16:30 we have a cruiser that actually IS locking the rear brake.
    This is telling me something. It tells me some people are afraid to use the best brake they have, which is the front. And they're willing to put lives at stake because of it.
    Also lane splitting: not at such ridiculous speeds. He probably noticed the slowing down traffic too late.
    18:13 rider takes his hand off the throttle for some gesturing. In doing so they also remove their hand from the vicinity of the front brake. Which might be useful in just this situation.

    Speed differential is the killer in lane splitting

  • @PeterVerhas
    @PeterVerhas Před 3 měsíci

    At 17:09, the guy uses his rear brake more than the front; that is the way to do it in this situation. It helps make the turn to the right sharper and is more forgiving for slips, like in the video. Having enough speed, the bike will stabilize itself after a few waves. From experience, it is better to have spare underwear afterward.
    However, the whole situation is stupid. She is driving high-speed lane splitting, having a mental image in her head, imagining the cars' future position, speed, and movements. It was different from reality; she imagined the car would stay in the lane. You should constantly consider the cars as predators: what could be their stupidest movement that could kill me? And be prepared for that.

    Hey Dan, in addition to progressive braking, what are your thoughts on downshifting and engine braking assist? I'm sure youve discussed at some point but I personally haven't heard much from you on this. Curious as to your thoughts.

    • @joemann7971
      @joemann7971 Před 3 měsíci +4

      Personally, I think downshifting should be taught as safety. Especially for dealing with intersections and need to taper off some speed. Downshifting can help slow down your bike while leaving you in a good power band (especially critical with smaller bikes) should you need to accelerate to avoid collision.
      IMO, downshifting is much better than coasting. Even if you expect to come to a full stop, you just never know. Downshifting will make it much safer should the car behind you decide it doesn't want to stop.

      @@GaryM-ft7pw looks like you didn't ride a big heavy cruiser i see, even the rear brake can be applied progressively, and is linked to the front brake 😁 in case of c109

    I hate it when people describe progressive braking like at 1:26... squeeeeezing squeeeeezing squeeeeeeezing... I don't know how many people come off with the impression that you need to do it this slowly, or a couple of seconds at least. It's just a difference of gripping the lever as hard as fast as you can or giving the fork a bit of time to compress before you give it the full beans. Both takes just a blink of an eye, and you don't really have time to make it "progressive". I see it more as two-stage. Grab it and compress the suspension, then full force. If you're on reasonably grippy road, going straight and it's not rainy or something, you'll almost certainly be fine. It would be better to encourage people to brake forcefully, because most don't. Cars have emergency braking assistants for a reason, because analysis of huge amounts of ABS data shows that almost everyone applies full brakes only shortly before impact, when it's too late. Don't faff about. My newest bike has ABS, and almost the only way you can do it wrong is not to brake enough. You're in most cases better off overdoing it than not doing enough.
    To be fair, I've only ever ridden supersports or sporttourers. I don't really know how this feels on long-travel off-roaders or adventurers, let alone on what I see as pointless like cruisers or even choppers with too much rake, soft front and tiny fancy-looking brakes and tyres. But on a supersport or supernaked, the firm suspension will keep you from bottoming out and ABS will keep you from slipping or flying over the bars, so when I need to brake, I'm not pussyfooting around.

    There's a universal rear-ending rule in Europe. If car B drives behind a car A and B crashes into A, car B is ALWAYS the guildy party. You are legally obliged to keep the safe distance at any circumstances. So in that rear-ending of the bike video, the car is 100% at fault by definition.

    At 7:31 why to say anything? Why to gesture? It can start road rage, escalation. People drive the way they drive. You cannot teach them to be more careful.
    I have the mindset on the road imagining the old computer game when you navigate in space between rick asteroids. Cars are asteroid. No driver, no brain, hecktic. You avoid the collision, there is question about why they do not pay attention, who was right or who was wrong. You avoided the accident, everybody lives, unharmed, go on. If a car wants to change lane you have to yield. It is called the larger mass principle. You do not mess with streetcars, trains even in a car or in a truck. You just yield to the larger mass, it is your life. Highway code... well, it is only nice if they yield to you. I do not want the text “but he was right” on my tombstone.

    Angry harley pft super sport riders always projecting that someone else is angry when they pass em. I'm an adv rider so ill take any terrain. I don't care who leads, a 310gs wasn't made to race stay at a reasonable speed and ill follow, go over 75p buh bye. Buy a bike for how u ride, I'll hit any terrain I see. But I'm a beginner level ride so racing is last thing in my mind. Ive passed a supersport before on the freeway, he hit the traffic i picked my lanes and just rolled by at 70, that person im guessing got pissed cuz he ripped by me well over 120 mph. Half a mile later when i caught up, i was calling an ambulance for him and waving traffic around stsnding on my passenger foot pegs so i was as tell and clear as possible till chp got there, thank the gawds he got there quick n do did the ambulance cuz he out cold, no armor, just helmet tshirt n kackis found him googling the next day. 1000rr rider crashes(rider in critical condition after crashing on dangerous bike at excessive speeds) fukin papers. Dude seemed offended by either getting slowed to 55 by traffic or getting passed by a rider going 75 but considering he went over 3 lanes to be in mine when passing instead of passing in the empty lane that was on my left which woulda been safer than passing on my right before switching to the empty lane to avoid merging the. I've actually been told by SS to get a 'real bike' and 'how can you have fun on a bike that slow' and the "i wouldnt be caught dead" Ilive near a jc and university so other thing i hear often from squids that immediately gets me concerned for their safety is "this is my first bike" and it a 1000. Dealers got no budiness selelling a new rider that kind of bike. Every semester someone on one of those dies in a crash snd untill they do they're out there making car drivers think every motorcyclist is rolling over 100 flying past them dangerously, or rolling around on an insanely loud harley having a midlife crisis.
    Sry for the rant
