- One mistake would change Alana Moor's life forever. She was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison in a foreign country that was thousands of miles from her home and everyone she knew and loved.
Although isolated and stripped of her freedom, it was there that Alana began to find a healthier path forward.
The food in the Panamanian prison system would routinely cause her to fall ill. On a few occasions it even required a trip to the hospital.
Alana's journey to healing began with her pushing for healthier food options and leading daily exercise classes for other inmates. Through that she found self-empowerment and a sense of worth that had been lacking.
And today she is working with one of the largest plant-based event companies in Canada while continuing to champion healthier options for those who remain incarcerated.
She joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll for an incredible story of rebuilding strength from the ashes of despair.

I worked in a prison as a social worker. The food was terrible. I ate the food once. I got sick. I started bringing my lunch
Hahahah then you can relate to what I was talking about. Thanks so much for watching
Thank you for sharing your story Alana and for the wonderful work that you are doing! Thank you Physicians Committee for providing a platform. This is the first I heard about this. 🙏🏽
That story about her getting involved in a drug deal could’ve been told in maximum three sentences !
A ton of rambling nonsense
@@HarlemGreatest I don't think it was nonsense but like I said above, I appreciate the feedback. Thanks so much for watching
What she said about why people join gangs I think is the same reason why people join cults or get in relationships with bad or questionable people. Glad she was able to overcome it all.
Precisely. Thanks so much for watching!
Wow! What a strong woman! I'm wishing her much success with her foundation. She knows what women in her circumstance need.
Thanks so so much for watching, I am so grateful!
Thank you for this inspirational story. Alanna best of luck, you will do great
WOW!!! Amazing!!!! Great interview!!! So inspiring!!!! Bless you Alana!!!
Thank you so much for sharing your story-super inspirational!!! Proves that it doesn’t matter what happens it is what you choose to do with what happens!!!
Amen! Thanks so much for watching!
Fascinating story.
This has lots to do with vegan lifestyle and nutrition. Mindset and taking control of your life helps a lot with diet changes.
Yes absolutely, I agree! Thanks so much for watching.
Wow, so interesting. Bless you Alana ❤
Thanks so much
Excellent interview & an amazing story! I was feeling quite sad today, and this really was inspiring and uplifting. Thank you so much.
So glad to hear that. Thank you!
Thank you Alana. All the best in your mission. I had a daughter who spent 5 years in prison as a vegetarian... have to say that the prison did offer a protein alternative each meal.... usually a veggie burger. The food in general needs overhaul to limit all the ilta process junk...so many women gain lots weight cause of this
Hi! Thanks so much for opening up and sharing your story with me. I agree, in Panama there were zero alternatives and that was hard. There is so much that needs to be changed, one story at a time, I guess!
One of the best guests on this show, i love her tenacity and moxie, so very inspirational. Talk about making lemonade......
I really appreciate that comment. So nice wow.
Is it just me, or would that story make a good plot for a TV series?
I appreciate that! Let's tell Netflix lol
@@AlanaMoor Truly though, I would totally watch that show. Your attitude in how you dealt with your situation, faced it and even found ways to make it a meaningful experience are inspiring. And now you are using what you took from that experience to help other women to start their lives again after incarceration. Society as a whole would benefit if prisons were places where people could more easily find rehabilitation, hope for their futures and the tools to contribute to society in future, not just a place for punishment. Tanya O'Callaghan is another person in the plant-based community with an interest in prison reform. She spoke about it on the Rich Roll Podcast, but she has also been on The Exam Room Podcast. Maybe Chuck can put you in touch with her!
I cried at the end on this one- the respect-the dignity-the heartfelt gratitude and kindness....well how could you not?
Unbelievable story..not expected on this channel. I admire her attitude and not breathing down telling her story
Amazing story!!! Thanks for sharing! ❤
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you Alana for the courage to show your scars in order to help other young women who are at the crossroads in their lives to make a good decision or a bad one. We are what we eat & our mindset. I feel I am mind, body and spirit and when they are aligned to something greater than ourselves - which I choose to call God, we do good things for ourselves & others. Txs Chuck for taking this show to that good place for women suffering in prison. May God greatly bless you both!!!
Amen Amen. I hear that and I thank you for your kind words and for watching.
Loved this episode, it’s a change because you do have the same doctors on over and over. She made a mistake and admits it, she was young and we do take risks when we are young. I am glad she is a better person and willing to help others. Interesting she should write a better for young people it might keep them from doing the same mistakes.
This was a great topic and enjoyed listening to the story. One comment: Alana said that prison provided her with nothing (no tooth brush, toilet paper, soap, etc.) I want to mention that this is by design. Prison is not an all-inclusive resort. They want you to have a bad stay so you don't return.
What an amazing woman
Thank you 🙏🏽 Alana 🌸
M:)
It is terrible what she went through. I hope they caught the horrible woman who pulled her into this crime.
No she is still enjoying her life in Toronto, thanks for watching!
Your spirit is dazzling, Alana. Thanks for inspiring me with your fascinating story on a sad day. But “Teflona” Chuck? Toxic crap? How about “Valkyrie”? A powerful warrior spirit, indeed! THANKS!
38 minutes into her "testimony." Still no mention of plant based anything. Privileged girl gets caught smuggling dope blah blah blah
I would call it a Testimony and say that this was about much more than plant based anything. I am also not priviledged, trust me. Those people get time in beautiful prisons and they get out after a few short years. Blessings. Thanks for the feedback.
Burts bees isn't Vegan. I guess she's still stuck on cow breast milk. She's vegetarian. I'm a little confused with this interview.
Burt's Bees has no true part in the story except that I worked for the woman that built the brand. Not stuck, just being human and being honest and the best thing we can do as humans is to be positive and support each other. Thanks so much for watching.
@AlanaMoor having the breast milk of another mammal is not "just being human " lol. And I wasn't being negative, I was just stating a few observations. Take care!
I’m saving this interview
Thanks Chuck for introducing me to this gal
WOW
@@SincerelyShireen That's not the point. Someone who is working on conserving the planet is not going to judge someone else by making a comment geared towards "being stuck on cows breast milk" It's not uplifting, it does nothing to move the conversation forward and it is simply finding the thing that triggers you and you don't like and reacting to it. It wasn't being positive.
@@deborahmandra2745 Thanks so much for watching!
While this story is interesting, I don’t understand what it has to do with this channel and a vegan lifestyle/nutrition.
It was an opportunity to shake things up and bring someone's story to the light. Thanks so much for watching!
No it had nothing to do with whole plant based lifestyle. 😏
Astonishing young woman. You deserve to succeed in your quest. Remember, Nelson Mandela was also an ex-con. He used his prison experience to be as constructive as possible.
Nelson Mandela was a political prisoner because he tried to speak up against an incredibly racist government. This does not even begin to compare.
Nelson Mandela was a revolutionary political prisoner, not an "ex-con"
@Wolfkiller too true. A great soul. But also somebody - a very special somebody, who rose above his situation and was constructive
Let the cheese go, it's so overrated
It's a process and I am on the road to it! Thanks for watching!
You have a lot to share. You have the beginnings of a reentry program for women. You may want to contact Impact services on Philadelphia. Women are still hard to place be cause of their needs.
Thanks so much for your comment and suggestions. I will do that for sure. And thank you so much for watching!
I'm glad she made it through this experience alive. Prayerfully she will grow wiser and be all that God created her to be.
Thank you!
It is fairly easy for an individual to get cornered into situations like this, especially when that person place their success, or, their capacity to succeed , in the hands of another person. It is essentially giving away of self efficacy to that person. It is a form of manipulation and a tool often utilised by abusers, manipulators, gangs, cults, etc. So, it is great that this young lady was able to get through a rather awful experience.
However, this young lady still lacks complete responsibility for her actions. Furthermore, when you have committed a crime, and, are being punished for said crime, whatever led you to that situation, you have absolutely no right to criticise, and, trash talk the government of another country for not being like yours. It is a different country with a different culture and justice system. Also, rapist in law-enforcement, and, people who abuse their authority in generally, exist in every country, including the US and Canada. So, it’s not like the police in South America are all more likely to be rapist and come for you, because "you are a 'beautiful' European woman”. First, Panama, has a lot of actually beautiful women; the very question leading to that statement was foolish. Secondly, that is insulting to an entire country, and, continent! Absolutely thoughtless statement. I am a social worker in the US and have worked with a lot for former prisoner, both male and female, and know that those things do happen even in this country. Furthermore, prisons at least in the US, are a private industry; as in a business, which is why they are "nicer".
This young lady sounds incredibly entitled, childish and needs to grow up some more. The world owes us absolutely nothing. It is good that she seemed to have found a cause and hopefully it will help her own process. However, giving the general topic of this channel I fail to see the value of this interview.
Very well said. Ty for sharing your insight.
prison is a place of punishment for doing bad things breaking the law and hurting our society.
Yes and it's also a place where good people get places for making bad decisions and much more. Trust me, I lived it.
The chickens didn’t commit any crimes
Disappointing….bye !!!
Me 56 minutes in waiting for this to become about plants 🥲🥑
