Technically there were three price bumps on the PS5. You forgot to mention the $50 price bump on the digital slim.

Not defending the price hike but the recession did not cause inflation. A lot of prices usually go down during a recession
Well, this misses the context that PS3 was struggling, so a price cut was required for business. PS5 is doing well, so they have no business reason to cut the price. In fact, they are banking that people still buy it with the price hike.
Sony is foolish and greedy. Gaming is a luxury. If the yen is struggling, the first thing that won't be purchased is a gaming console, especially if it costs more than it did.
at the time they were competing with the xbox sales numbers and the ps3 was priced at a high number already , they were cutting costs the time the prices goes down

I’m also a firm believer that they should not do a half step console release. We don’t need a PS5 Pro. We need them to utilize the PS5 and later release a PS6 so that the technological jump seems worth it. As it is, these half steps makes the following generation appear less impressive.
No, they need to bring the base PS5 down to $349-$400 and price the pro versions at $499-$549. That way people on last gen can get on board with current generations and people who decide to go pro will get a taste of the first few years of ps6 life cycle before diving into ps6 fully. Plus the base PS5 can be an entry point to this generation and can compete with the switch 2 release.

That's true. When u compare the current consoles to that last gen we always do so with the pro models which is why they don't seem that impressive but if you compare them to the 2013 consoles they definitely are.

This generation is a total mess. Bring out a Pro version of a console that has no games so you can still play PS4 games while raising the price of the PS5 that has been out for 4 years and is an obvious flop. I'm currently going back to the PS3 and playing GTA IV as I'm over it.

When a company is publicly traded and the shareholders expect infinite growth 📈 companies come up with all kinds of "ways" to increase profit margins. They loooove the fact that people automatically justify it and blame it solely on inflation.

Ive been living in Japan for 9 years, and all ill say is our weak yen was worth 1.5 to almost 2times less than the dollar. Sony makes a lot more money overseas so it kinda makes sense to raise the price to get a return that could at least keep pace with profits in other markets.

I've been gaming since the 80s - the aftermath of the Pandemic is the only time in the last 40 years that the US economy has experienced significant inflation. You'd think people realize that means prices go up.
It's so idiotic for people to discuss this as something unique to gaming and even moreso as something particular to an individual product like the PS5.
Sony seems confused or something. They got the “winners” ball but don’t know what to do with it. They haven’t even hit their stride on the regular PS5 yet lol. This generation has to be the weirdest era of gaming, ever.
Prepare for PS5 pro at 700 bucks. The latest Xbox one x 2tb is like 650 bucks.. it's getting crazy out there.

Why would it be cheaper? Companies have to put a huge amount of man hours into development. Not to mention the supply issues. In what world does that equal a less expensive product? That makes zero sense

The fundamental problem with this current generation is not a technical problem but instead a timing and adherence to legacy/previous generation hardware i.e PS4/PS4 Pro.Regarding timing,the PS4 was launched in November of 2020 during the first full year of the global COVID-19 pandemic.With that brought massive supply-chain disruptions which led to limited stock availability and astronomical prices on the resale market.That caused the natural adoption rate to be greatly reduced as the global economy went into a recession.The adherence to cross generation also prevented PS5 games from showing the next-generation capability of the PS5.That strategy was implemented to make up for the reduced installed user base and to allow the game developers to make a Return On their Investment to develop their respective games.A PS5 Pro is technically not currently needed as there has not been a PS5 game that has fully reached the performance threshold of the PS5.From my understanding the upcoming GTA6 will apparently be the first game that would require a PS5 Pro to run at Rock stars intended performance targets.The other point of note pertaining to GTA6 is that it would be released on PS5/PS5 Pro first before it is released on PC.Thus allowing Sony to use GTA6 as a system seller and giving them first mover advantage over Microsoft.

The issue this gen is game development cycles. It takes too long. It's been 2 generations since a gta game. It's insane
Literally all we want is ray tracing, 4k and 60fps all in one mode and not in 3 different modes. That's it.

The console price increase is due to a number of factors in the market, no one can control that.. A PS5 slim model, costing more than a base model on release, is ridiculous!! As for the 30fps games, that’s normal given this time of the generation with its hardware almost 7 years old, hasn’t been any different from previous consoles generations.
Not available in Japan anywhere now, 2 months ago was available everywhere not anymore and have to apply for a lottery to see if you can get 1 only online stores

Uh, no. You can't compare the current exchange rate to before. It launched in Japan at pretty much an equivalent price to the US, ¥55,000 after tax which was about $500-550 USD at the time.
if the top steam deck with 1Tb can cost 679€, then people should be realistic about the PS5 Pro price. don't @ me with some stupid caluclations a la 'but games on 'PCs' are cheaper. That is not the point.

Not a big deal, is just a exchange rate issue. 1USD used to be 110JPY went up to 160JPY. If they do nothing will be cheaper for some regions of the world to just import PS5s from Japan. Another point, keep the same price in a high inflation environment is price cut. ✌️

Does no one understand the concept of currency? The price of the PS5 didn't go up, it went down over time (because of the weaker yen) and now Sony reverted that again to have a simliar price in Japan as in the US or Europe.

Great video! Looking at last week's poll, my guess is the Switch being bundled with PS5/Xbox Series is what put the current generation squareiy in 3rd. PS3/Xbox 360/Wii would be my top generation as well.

They just repurposed an existing, low-end Tegra from Nvidia with 4GB of cheap-o, relatively slow LPDRR4, on a now ancient (by technology standards) manufacturing process. Relative to PS5 and Series X, it was overpriced for their hardware at launch. Compared to custom chips on the (at the time of release) most advanced manufacturing process and 16GB of GDDR6. Nintendo was making serious bank on their hardware sales from the start.
Yup you are one of the very few who are aware of how cheap and greedy Nintendo is. The Switch 1 could have easily have better specs, but Nintendo since the Wii days uses the cheapest components they can get away with for maximum profit. They truly don't care if it's a nightmare for 3rd party devs, or if the performance is subpar. People do their PR work for them. People see it as the opposite. People see their products as a bargain compared to the PlayStation and Xbox when in reality they are very overpriced considering the price vs spec ratio. Thats even more so now. Charging $350 for a Switch (OLED or not) is a highway robbery in 2024.

As a PC gamer, recently bought PS5 just for Stellar Blade, played some other games as well but everything in PS screams "old" and "cheap". Feels like gaming on at least a 10 years old PC, with an additional input delay injected. The money saved is not worth the degraded performance and lack of versatility.
