There are three things you need to know about the i8 market before buying one. First, the price development for first and second generation cars differ tremendously. Second generation cars decreased massively in price during the last years whereas first generation cars increased, hereby following the market trend. The depreciation effect in the second generation market was so strong that prices didn’t increase during the pandemic. Second, there are important nuances in the price development. In the first generation market the low mileage cars increased more than the rest of the market. This could be an indication that the car is getting a collectable status. Contrary to this, it are the low mileage in the second generation market that are responsible for the large price decrease. Third, the supply level increased a lot and this is unusual for cars that are no longer produced.
Looking at future prices, especially the first generation has a lot of things going for it. However, there’re are also factors that might affect prices negatively.

  • @csuconcordia
    @csuconcordia Před 2 lety +13

    A few interesting points
    1. The supply increase is caused by cars coming off lease (2 year leases)
    2. I did a bit of analysis comparing the supply of an i8 to a 911 to understand the popularity and would be interesting if you included some for of that. Basically cars sold/cars available used on the market
    3. 2019-2020 have some notable advantages
    - bigger battery
    - carplay
    4. Warranty is 4 years bumper-bumper, 8yrs hybrid components
    Thanks for your work!

The i8, because the battery will be useless and once it’s useless so will a 3 cylinder engine. Other cars with butterfly doors don’t have this narrow design.

The Carrera is not a cheap car to fix and maintain. Just check the price of a replacement PDK gearbox or an engine rebuild. They made 100’s of thousands of 911, manufactured and oversupplied to the market during the last 10 tears. Not really a collectible car anymore unless you buy a special limited production model, due to over supply. The i8 is very special to drive and it’s construction. Less than 20.000 made in the complete production run. The last updated generation from 2018 was not made in big numbers… I think the future will prove the i8 was a very special car and become very collectible. Over the years I have owned 2 x i8’s and 5 x 911’s. All fantastic driving machines for their designed purpose. The i8 was way ahead of its time in hybrid tech and design.

I own a Ferrari 488 Pista, a Portofino, a Porsche 992 and an i8 roadster, but to be honest the i8 is the most exotic and fascinating car to me. It's a piece of BMW history. I'm sure prices will follow th Z8: no one wanted them new, now they are highly desired. 911 are great cars, but it's allways more or less the same - at least the Look.

The person who designed this car is amazing and awesome. This person has a very unique design style. For me, since I saw it in 2008, it feels like time has stopped moving, and I always feel that its appearance is still so stunning. 😊

Was just watching this again, it's important to note that the i8 prepandemic just as it was being discontinued got massive discount - iirc I got a 40k CAD discount on a Brand new 2019 coupe just before the pandemic

This video is interesting and I like the data approach. The video does fail to highlight most BMW I8's were leased vehicles and a 2019-2020 model BMW i8 having been coming off lease at a unique time--during the actual and post pandemic. If you look at the original MSRP price you got hefty discounts by comparison but they were discounted out of the gates. Yet, the pricing ratio is less than say that of a Porsche 911 which would be at or above original msrp. If you want to own an i8 get a 2nd generation roadster that is a CPO with no accidents and low mileage. The supply level increase is due to the year model drop and reactivating a year later with the 2nd gen and off lease. People also saw radical increased values so smart people who owned an i8 were able to profit and dealers as well. Dealers banked on the low predicted i8 residuals which were forecasted years prior. Video would be excellent if accounted for these specifics.

I have had 3 i8s and own 4k mile Roadster.
The fast big drop in Gen 2 is due 100% to 30-35% discount offered on ALL 19/20 new cars to shift them, like the Z8 was in 2003.
In 2021 Autotrader had 234 coupes and 67 Roadsters - in Feb 23 just 123 coupes and 20 ROADSTERS. when they get to 6 or 7 cars values skyrocket just like my SLS, Z8, CLS, 996.1 gt3 did....get one now while just over half retail as they'll be back at retail in 5-6 years and twice retail in 10-15 years !

By 10 years you can expect to have to replace the big battery and other problems arising. The diff in hp is negligible. Can be addresses on the engine simply.

The price development in the roadster market is similar to the one in the second gen market as most of the second gen cars are roadsters.

The roadster looks even more unique and futuristic. You lose the back seats which is probably not a concern for many people.
I’ve rented the coupe a couple times while in Vegas. Once with my wife and two boys so it was PERFECT. And once with just my wife and we even rented an Audi R8 on the same trip so for a day we had BOTH cars and chased each other on the desert roads.
The i8 was SO MUCH BETTER than the R8 in every way.
More fun. More confident (I did 156mph in it). Better looks. Amazing doors. Much better sound system. Heads up display. Better technology. Excellent comfort/sport mode suspension adjustments and sound adjustments. The i8 is amazing and you are very lucky to have one!!!
For comparison I’ve also rented a McLaren MP4-12C, Dodge Vioer, Ferrari GTC4LUSSO (which also fit my boys in the back comfortably), Tesla Model 3 (also fits the boys and is super fast and discreet) and a 911 (which fits the kids only when they were little, now they are probably too big for any ride over 15 minutes in the back of one).
Unfortunately. I’ve never owned any of those cars. You are a lucky man.

I've always liked the i8's design, a departure from other post-1998-hideous BMW's which are getting uglier by the year. I don't think that this will be a future classic though. It's more gimmicky and striking. I was quite disappointed to learn that it's a composite body (not metal). I had inquired at a local BMW dealer on the i8 years ago and was in fact told it's "not that good". It's not a sports car by any means even though it masquerades as one. The M1 and 635 CSi (The Shark) were BMW's finest moments by way of sports coupe's, and I don't consider the M3, M4 or M5 in this category. Thanks for this video, was always curious about this car. A near new i8 over here (2022) will set one back $140K
