    I'm a DOD Aircraft Maintainer Crew Chief on a military base. This is by far one of the coolest jobs I've seen the USAF have. My biggest question, if anyone knows, these guys have Flight Engineer duties. How often do Special Mission Aviators do maintenance on the platform they're working? Do they learn all of the systems on the specific platform and if something goes wrong in the air, try and help keep it flying until they can land safely and brief maintenance or do they actually do aircraft maintenance as well as everything else they do? I know long question, but was wondering how much actual maintenance do they perform.

    • @trevorwalden6097
      @trevorwalden6097 Před 3 lety +7

      They are not maintainers, however SMA's can perform basic troubleshooting whenever a malfunction arises (I.E. pulling a circuit breaker or resetting a system). Apart from an emergency scenario, they aren't qualified to perform repairs. These guys are in charge of operating aircraft systems along side pilots, though, so they're very knowledgeable.

      For any pilot career in the Air Force,
      First step, applicants must be qualified to join the Air Force and apply for Officer Training School. OTS applicant must have any baccalaureate degree or be a senior at a college or university to apply. You must have earned a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better to be eligible to apply. OTS applicants will contact an Air Force Line recruiter to schedule an appointment. During the initial appointment qualifications are confirmed to include education, height & weight, medical history, law violations, etc.
      Second step, the recruiter will schedule the OTS applicant to take the Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT).
      Third step, after taking the Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT) and receiving the results (may take 2-3 weeks). You and the Line Officer recruiter will work together on putting your OTS package together and submitting it to the OTS selection board. OTS is very competitive.
      Last step, IF selected you will receive one of the careers that YOU requested, qualified for, and serve in. You will then take your physical exam to confirm that you are medically qualified to join the Air Force and for that career. You will then attend OTS when your class date comes up. Officer Training School (OTS) is 9.5 weeks in duration at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. The entire process depending on which OTS selection board you apply for it may take anywhere from 6 months to over a year.

      2.) Enter Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) and begin your flight training. (@ 1 year)
      3.) Nearing completion of UPT you will be assigned an Aircraft. It's called getting your Seat Assignment. This is determined by these factors: Class Ranking, training performance reports, instructor recommendations, your aircraft preferences, and our needs.
      4.) Upon completion of UPT and your Seat assignment, you continue your flight Training for the specific aircraft you were assigned. (6 months to one year)
      5.) Nearing completion of your Advanced Flight Training, you will be given a Squadron, and location assignment. Your location preferences are considered.
