  • After breaking his hip on a blue run at the local ski resort, Christof now has lots of time to review the skis currently gathering dust in his garage. First up, the Voile Hyper V8s. These backcountry powder skis are some of the lightest in the game with a 114mm waist at the 181cm length. They come in at 2940g which is light enough not to bother you on the skin track during a big day of skiing deep, soft snow.

    Rip Christof's hip, glad to see your asthetic standards remain unscathed. Wish you all the best with your recovery and hope to see you back soon. I hope you are able to fly and manage to keep your spirits up. Thanks for making more great content, it has been very insightful as I make my way into the world of Backcountry skiing

      Looking good is half the objective,lol! Thanks, I’ll be back at it before too long. Should be 100% recovery but I’m sure I’ll be dialing it back a bit for the next little while to make sure I completely heal. Been on leave from flying since Feb, probably back to the skies in another month I’d guess. Thanks for watching, glad it’s useful, or at least entertaining!

    I once dislocated my hip, nestled it next to my lung inside my chest cavity in August, was out of the wheelchair and skiing by April. Rub some dirt on it and get back in the game mister! I kid, make SURE your strong enough before heading back out!!! Then take it easy for awhile until everything feels right. I didn't and 30 years later I wish I had. Now i need a new hip. I wouldn't mind taking those Voilles off your hands...

    I’ve spent hours looking for a ski…., none of which were white. I’d probably take a grinder and orange spray paint to it or one piece of bright color duct tape to the tip and tail. Of course, I live in Alaska and duct tape here means the equipment is well used which is cool. No one would question it.
    Good luck with the hip man - not happy to hear about that - get well.

    Moonlight are supposed to be excellent skis. I have not tried them myself, but their Mountaineer, Traverse and even Race models have become something of a mark of hardcore skimo/touring guys and girls over here in Norway. You cannot go wrong on an all black ski, no matter what you look like going downhill.

    🤣 Yes..you're right, it's really not very important but the only negative point about the hyper V8 is the graphics...I own them in 186cms and love them I just hate the topsheet. I've got also the regular V8 2019 and these are much more beautiful. Hope you've recovered well.

    Dude what video was this from? Or is this from a tour that did not make the Mediocre cut? I feel like if Danny already has these clips, it would be kind of cool to have an edit that focused a little more on the skiing. Just occasionally, so the suffering can stay at the forefront. But this is some of the sickest footage I've seen out there. Bummed about the hip Christof, not the same with ya!

    Hey Christof, have you ever used a Booster Strap on one of your Touring boots? I'm considering switching since the velcro gets blown out on the Maestrales.

    • @cnuila
      @cnuila Před 4 měsíci +1

      The strap they spec on the new maestrale is pretty awesome. Booster straps are great, just a little overkill for most touring boots but something like the maestrale might warrant it

    • @cnuila
      @cnuila Před 2 lety +1

      @@abcdethan Oh they were my favorite everyday skis I've ever had. Highly recommend. There was just a guy that really wanted them for the rest of the season so I let them go. The irony is I wouldn't be surprised if I end up with another pair next year. I'm just not seeing anything at that width and weight that skis as well.
      Good news is the 22/23 model has some color on the top-sheet for divas like me;) Starting to see great deals on this years model (graphic is the only change for next year) so might be a good time to snag some!

    18m is a short radius for a modern powder ski, and 15 is just insane-it should be mentioned that turning is braking-most modern powder skis start at 21m and many offer considerably more. Interesting choices too with beefier boot, beefier binding, and weak light ski. In powder you don't need what the ATK freeraider offers on a ski like that. Beefier ski in chunder and refrozen? Then yeah atk FR is a great choice. But no one is gonna be charging in chunder and refrozen on a light and wide carbon ski like the voile. Would seem that for just lapping true powder you could get a denser, or longer, or wider ski, and eat that weight gain by choosing a lighter binding. I suspect that would offer significantly higher performance than a undersized arguably too light ski with a beefy binding. As Lord Hoji says, you need a minimum amount of mass for performance, mass in the ski is way more important than mass in a binding. That is a rule that cannot be cheated. Skiing powder is fun with anything, but the amount of speed and control you can gain by picking a ski that is 200g more and getting a binding that is at least 100g lighter is a better choice for much higher performance. Performance "gain" from a heavier binding doesn't make a difference until you start getting into hybrid bindings. The only advantage atk provides is more metal ie durability. The freeride spacer too doesn't seem to offer a benefit in soft snow or sub 110m skis. Having used it, it seems like it offers performance advantages for wider skis and harder surfaces where the vagueness of heel pins is more apparent. Voile seems like a good option for utah blower harvesting with a light boot and light binding, but it doesn't require the beef of a radical pro or the beefier binding because of the inherent speed limit of a 18m radius ski 110 waisted ski that weighs 1500. Anyway, good luck with sale, good quality vid, and hope you heal up well.

      @jarnold1789 Před 2 lety +1

      I generally agree with you, Mr. Troll, but 18m for a pow ski really isn’t too wild. You say that turning is braking, which I assume you mean to be a negative for a pow ski(?), but turning is also quite fun. My Line Outlines have an 18.5m turn radius and, at least in the soft stuff, don’t have much of a speed limit. And while the Outlines are a very different ski (2000g, softer, more heavily rockered), they will happily carve groomers at 50mph and straight line steep slopes in powder.
      I do agree with you that freeraider 14’s are a bit overkill for Christof’s setup though, and that you’re better off with the mass being in the ski rather than the binding. I suppose a beefier binding gives you a bit of an insurance policy if you encounter crust and crud at speed, but I’ve been pretty impressed by what buddies of mine can do on very lightweight bindings. It seems that modern featherweight touring bindings are quite capable, but I lug around kingpins so what do I know
