Great formula and good caveats to include.
I'm 68 years old, (5'8" / 173cm, 160 lbs / 73kg) and of course, in 1970, I was on a pair of Dynamic VR17's at 207 cm! I include that because of some of the previous (funny) comments regarding loooong skis.
About 18 years ago, I switched to telemark skiing, but the formula works for me.
My quiver of skis for use in Utah:
    1. For powder days, I was on 185cm Armada JJ's at 116 underfoot and they were amazing. I sold them and am now on 182cm Dynastar M-Free 108's which I have just gotten and not skied yet.
    2. For those days of under about 10" / 25cm of new or chopped up over bumps, my go to ski is a pair of Blizzard Rustler 10's at 172cm.
    3. Bump days with less than about 6" / 12cm or chopped up days after a storm or choppy bump days, Atomic Vantage 85 at 165cm.
    4. And for really hard pack, carving days or bump days when they are really set up, 160cm Rossignol 84 AI's with a blisteringly tight 11.5m turn radius.
I don't go in the park, but I like to ski switch and the rocker/camber/rocker design is brilliant for all of my needs!

    Testing:
    186 tall
    ~180 eye level
    +heavier +2cm (102 kg) + quite heavier 2cm
    +fast and long turns +2cm
    +powder +2cm
    +rocker +2cm
    +free ride +2cm
= 192cm. Exactly the length of my Bent Chetler 120s, success!
I think there’s a little bit of room for discretion like I used for double heavy or if someone is just waaaay different in some sense, but overall it’s a good guide.
One more criterion id out there is confidence interval of +/- 2cm. Meaning if your calcs are within 2cm in either direction of the ski length you come across, it is an acceptable match.

I'm 198cm/85kg and run on 163cm skis with R13. I love it. Longer skis make long turns and you need much speed to make sharp turns. But I tested 170cm R16 and did not feel comfortable at all, not my style. More than just looking into your height and centimeters, is much more important how you want to ski and what ski length and radius will bring you that feeling. Test some different skis and forget all these rules. The most stupid thing is to buy skis which follow some formula but doesn't support your ski style you want. That will eventually stop your hobby.

Okay, without getting to the quote whether this formula works or not" I ran the numbers. I ski a 179 cm length Atomic backland 117. I've been seeing on this length and with since 2016 or so when it was the Automatic. I chose this length because it's short enough to be nimble in the trees and moguls in Utah, but let me float on deep days in Japan and Europe. Your formula resulted in the length -179/180 - on which I have been skiing for years. So applause to you 👏👏👏
Probably could ski the 184 without issues, but skiing 201s into moguls as a kid had my scared into shortest possible skis.

Definitely a good general way to look at it. The only thing that can be a bit confusing for some would be the stiffness. Maybe mention that it holds mainly true when it's the exact same model. That if you start mixing models the stiffness can be totally different regardless of size.
Eg. a 171cm Head Framewall will be way stiffer than a 181cm Head Caddy, even though both are freestyle of the same brand. Same deal with the Head Kore 99 vs the other in the Kore lineup. The 99 is a much stiffer ski.

Back in the late 70s-early 80s I was competing Freestyle. I skied 185cm K2s for bumps and jumps. Some competitions and ski areas had areas where you had a minimum 200cm ski length Mary Jane at Winter Park, CO was one. Before I went pro we weren't allowed to go inverted or do more than a 720 off the kicker. On the pro circuit we could do any jump you could get certified for, but a double twisting triple was as far as I got. It helped that one of my coaches was Eddie Lincoln and skiing with the greats like Scott Brooksbank, John Clendenin was awesome.

To make things even more confusing - there are some differences at how manufacturers define the length of skis. Some of them mark up the length of the surface of skis, or unbent skis ( so after the ski is shaped up actual projection length is 2-2.5 cm shorter than claimed one); others put the length of projection, thus 170 of one brand can be longer than 172 of other brand.

It is awesome info. Thanks. Can you elaborate on the topic of binding settings, please? If I use conventional ski shop settings the skis are popping up like crazy. Some times I landing without one or even two skis. That will be a good topic for a new video.

I’m 1.85m, and I use 1.65m Atomic Redsters for Piste(basically the Slalom ski variant), they work fine for me, I have it up to approximately my chin, it usually is the case that, the shorter the slalom ski the more control you have over them, I can’t really agree or disagree since I’ve just been at this length for a long long time and I got used to it, I tried 1.95m Downhill skis, that was the coolest experience ever, the ability to hold the edge on a 50% slope at speed is madness, but, I don’t recommend doing it if you are new to skiing, stick to piste, falling hurts, found out twice when on the Downhill 1.95m’s

Great tips! Are the calculations thrown of any by twintips with longer tails or is it considered in the calculations with "park" or similar? Great video as always Jens!

No, the calculation will be rather accurate. The fact that you get longer tails if you mount the skis closer to center on park skis is one of the reason why freestyle skis are kind of a long type skis often around eye brow hight to full body length depending on your ability,

The meaning of "Rocker" varies such a lot. A lot of racing skis have a tip rocker, park skis have a fairly small tail kick. Then you have huge full rocker off-piste skis. You definitely want to go a bit longer on those, because a large amount of the ski is not in contact with the snow at times.

I wish I knew this back when I got my skis. Mine are a bit too long and heavy for me. Trying to learn a basic 360 but it feels so awkward, they just won't spin as I'd like them to. I'm pretty short and average weight (at age 17).
I'll get the 360 down at some point though! :)
