  • I really wanted to convert our wood lathe to variable speed because there’s a lot of advantages to doing so. I was very close to spending $180 for the conversion, then realize that I had a variable speed DC motor from a treadmill. The conversion was very simple the shaft was the same the mounting bracket was the same and the motor was slightly bigger than the motor I had on the lathe originally. So all in all I’m very happy with the conversion.

The large pully on the moter will make the lathe go faster. FYI.

Thank you, Helps a bunch, I have the same lathe (Craftsman/Duramax/Central Machinery) but with a 1hp motor, and was thinking about doing a similar conversion. Oddly, I would have thought a dryfit verses putting anti seize on the the shaft.
Looks like you extending the pulley pretty far out on the shaft to get a proper alignment, have you had any issues?
I have also recently found a Nova3000 without a motor (I think they had done a similar conversion with the expensive Nova motor and wanted to take the motor to their new Nova 1644) I wonder if any of the treadmill motors are face mounted...
Nice to know that the shaft is 5/8ths. I've seen several tread mills for free or

Is your motor shaft bent? It seems you have a bit of shaking. Thanks for the video!

It's the MaN doing this that's the problem he says the pully is a perfect fit look at the way the pully slides onto the shift loosely this man hasn't a clue about what he's doing

How did you know how to wire it?

A treadmill motor is easy to wire up with either an SCR controller or with the actual treadmill board depending on the kind of board.

Search Craigslist . Choose "Free" under "items for sale". Enter "treadmill" in the search box of the free stuff page. Click on "Save search" to the right of the bar where you entered "treadmill". On the "search" page of "My Craigslist" (accessed from the choices at the top left of the Craigslist "home" page) turn on "notify me" to get a notice as soon as someone posts a free treadmill. Works great. Costs you nothing. Call, email, or text ASAP when another treadmill is offered for free. Most treadmills fold so can be picked up and loaded by two people even in a car. That's how I get 'em.
