  • Hey everyone!
I am really excited to start my brand new series on my second favorite band of all time, Led Zeppelin!
Here in today’s video, I rank all eight studio albums by the band.
From ‘Led Zeppelin 1,2, 3, & 4’ (or Zoso perhaps? Or Four Symbals anyone?), and ‘Houses Of The Holy’, ‘Physical Graffiti’, ‘Prssence’ to ‘In Through The Outdoor’ I’ve got you covered!
Which Led Zeppelin album ranks the lowest? It’s here in this video! Which LZ album takes the top spot? That’s here too!
If you enjoy this type of content, or know of someone who’s a fan of Led Zeppelin, of course we envied you to subscribe to ‘The Tribe’, and/or share this video with someone who might enjoy it!
Who knows? They just might thank you!

I personally love every LZ album but if I had to choose my favorite it would be Houses of The Holy and I think Pagey might agree with me on this and I wish I had asked him this the last time I saw him but the layers of guitars and his production of the album was just brilliant and the Rain Song is a masterpiece in my opinion but what he does in the studio with the recording of the Song Remains the Same is just brilliant, just listen to the layers of guitars and the mixing of that song...its just brilliant and he does not get enough credit for the amazing work he does as a record producer!

I’ve been a Zeppelin fanatic for over 40 yrs.….I especially love live Zeppelin.
I really like your rankings. Everyone of their 8 studio are incredible.
It’s so hard to even put “Outdoor” at the bottom because it’s also so damn good! I love “In the Evening” and the playful “Hot Dog” and the beautiful “All My Love”. Incredible album that’s equal to anything that came before it in my opinion.
    Great job!! ✌️✌️❤️❤️🎸🎸

    • @MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine
      @MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine  Před 2 lety

Absolutely! The only reason I was ‘forced’ to place it at 8 was because the sound was so close to their post Zeppelin music, HOWEVER if they had stayed together, they very well might have developed this sound in a less ‘eighties’ way that their post Zep careers seemed to embrace!
Note! I’m NOT saying In Through… sounded like the eighties, it’s just that the sound on the album was later weakened because each of them didn’t have the other 3!
      Thanx!

Thanks for your ranking, you shared some good insights about Zep's music. It is difficult to rank these albums, as it is with the albums of any great band or artist. I will say that I agree with you that Presence is a great and underrated album. I love Page's work on the later albums. His soloing is very melodic and expressive. And his solo on Achilles Last Stand is my favourite in the Zep catalogue, and those on NFBM and Tea for One are superb. My personal favorite among Zep albums is Physical Graffiti. That's partly for a sentimental reason, in that it's the very first rock alum I ever bought. But musically it's an outstanding piece of work that brings together and accentuates the various dimensions they had explored in their earlier albums.

You know what's crazy to me? LZ III has no less than FOUR of the most intense rockers in their entire catalogue - Immigrant Song, Celebration Day, Out on the Tiles and the epic Since I've Been Loving You. And yet people at the time said they had gone soft!
And I agree with ranking the debut album higher than nornal. It's a jaw dropping achievement for a group that had only been together a few months, all of them so young.

It's not often I agree with a Top albums list. But I agreed with every choice on your list.
I often think of Presence as my favorite album. And, it is MY favorite. But, when I step outside myself, I know it is not nearly their best album. There just isn't enough sonic variety. It is brilliant though. Page and Bonham were very nearly at their best. Plant sounds vocally weak throughout. But his lyrics are brilliant. To me, it is his most personal statement, outside, maybe, 10 Years Gone. That Achilles Last Stand AND Nobody's Fault But Mine appeared on one album is a miracle.
All that being said, the stunning variety of songs on your Top 4 make them deserving of the ranking you have given them.

The Genius of Jimmy Page and the Mighty Led Zeppelin! Like I said with the solos, the list can change weekly or even daily...they were that good. You called Presence a masterpiece...uh and your right! It's probably my top pick, I believe that entire band was at their best when they recorded Presence. Recorded in just 18 days using the Rolling stone's mobile studio.. There was only a short window with the scheduling and for what ever reason Page didn't want to wait. They may have been obligated to get a record out..and with Plant in a wheelchair..it was a time of desperation for the band , as members later stated...Achilles last stand!!! Every song is fantastic.....uh like all of their albums 😉, some of Pages best soloing ever..imo. it's quite puzzling how this one kinda fell through the cracks. But not by real MLZ fans for sure.....only the radio ones let it slip into days.....

    Really enjoyed this ranking.
    Here’s my ranking
    8. Presence (1976)
I love this album, it’s fantastic and Achilles Last Stand is one of the best songs in their entire catalogue. But I don’t enjoy tea for one that much and royal Orleans and no one’s fault but mine are just ok, everything else is great though and this album is still amazing
    7. In Through The Out Door (1979)
It took a couple listens for it to click but this one’s great. I like I’m gonna crawl and I think hot dog is just ok but everything else is amazing All My Love, In The Evening, Carouselambra, and fool in the rain are all great
    6. Houses Of The Holy (1973)
This has one of the best openers in rock history in the song remains the same and the rain song is amazing. I also love over the hills. My Main issue is with the crunge which is just ok. But everything else is fantastic
    5. Led Zeppelin II (1969)
The hits off of this record are great, I love ramble on and whole lotta love. I also really enjoy what is and what should never be, heartbreaker and thank you, there’s not one bad song here it’s just very similar to the debut and I think the debut is a little better
    4. Led Zeppelin (1969)
One of the greatest debut albums of all time. Good Times Bad Times is the first zeppelin song you hear when you listen to their discography and it’s a 10/10. Your time is gonna come, dazed and confused, and babe I’m gonna leave you are among the great tracks here
    3. Led Zeppelin III (1970)
That’s the way and tangerine are two of my favorite zeppelin tracks and immigrant song is one of the best songs to listen to when you want to get exited quickly. Love this one so much
    2. Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
Stairway is a song people remember this record for but many seem to forget that this one has nothing but absolute bangers whether that be When The Levee Breaks or Misty Mountain Hop, or Battle Of Evermore the worst song is Four Sticks and it’s still amazing
    1. Physical Graffiti (1975)
Fantastic in every way, Kashmir is my favorite Led Zeppelin song and down by the seaside, in the light, houses of the holy and so much more are amazing. One of the greatest albums ever
Thanks for reading and have a great day and keep on rocking on

On my list, 1 is the most timeless - Communication Breakdown was on the jukebox a lot when I was a teen, and it's the album I'm most likely to listen to these days. 2 was the one I was most excited about back in 1970 - or ever, because I was 16 and that's what teenaged boys listened to that year. I do go back and listen sometimes as a guilty pleasure. And 3, my second-favorite as a kid. They played much of it at my first concert in late 1970, before it was released, opening with Immigrant Song. That was the last of their albums I bought before the 21st century, at which point I started with 1, then 4, then the rest chronologically. I totally agree 3 showed them starting to grow and to move in a new direction, and Plant still goes to several of those songs in concert. In terms of quality as rated now vs. enjoyment 50 years ago, the albums kept getting better, but my personal taste meant I tuned out arena rock music by the mid-70's, and listened to jazz until Patti Smith and the Ramones and Tom Petty and New Wave came along. I seem to like back-to-basics garage-rock as my go-to.

I can't say which is my favorite album, I love them all! But I can say for sure, from my father's collection, IV was the most listened to, especially Stairway To Heaven. Because I was born listening to this song and I was a crybaby so my mom would calm me down with this song. My dad (crazy about Zepp since he was 14) tells another story, he says that I purposely cried so I could listen to STH… 😇

Michael, great list, and pardon me for changing the subject. But im trying to figure out, what happened to Rock N Roll? Where are all the new artists. To me since Guns and Roses, we havent had that slammer band, Heres what Ive heard. That these record CEOs, Label owners, Like rap better because the cost of the show is much cheaper, being the music they play is all recorded and not live. Less roadies, less trucks, less money? By the time Physical Graphitti came out I had moved on to something else. I've just started listening to P.G. over the past few years, because everyone says it is so great. I'm still not there yet. I haven't listened to anything beyond that, at least not enough to judge or rank them. I, II & IV are tattood on my soul. I assume that the others, had I listened to them a hundred times, would feel the same.

I love ranking the Led Zeppelin albums. I thought your list was interesting. Maybe you'll think mine is just as interesting?!
Favorite Led Zeppelin albums from most to least:
    1. Led Zeppelin IV: An absolute classic, period! Not a bad track in the bunch, and it has my favorite Zeppelin tune, When the Levee Breaks.
    2. Physical Graffiti: The best double album ever, in my humble opinion. Again, not a bad track and it's the first Led Zeppelin I owned.
    3. In Through the Out Door: In the Evening rocks as hard as any Zeppelin tune, Fool In the Rain is a well-crafted departure from their other tunes and Carouselambra is a crazy tour-de-force. Hot Dog is lame, in my opinion. Wearing and Tearing would've been a better fit w/the same sound. They also could've left off I'm Gonna Crawl and used another leftover tune and it would've given the album a harder edge.
    4. Houses of the Holy: Again, an almost perfect album except for one stinker, The Crunge. I understand JPJ and Bonham love funk but Trampled Under Foot is a much better attempt. I'm not too high on Dancing Days either but, compared to The Crunge, it's a welcomed relief.
    5. Led Zeppelin II: I don't love it as much as the other four, but I like it a lot. Half of this album, Whole Lotta Love, What is and What Should Never Be, Heartbreaker, Ramble One and Bring It on Home is excellent. The others I can take or leave.
    6. Led Zeppelin I: It's a good debut album but it doesn't wow me as much as the others.
    7. Presence: Half is good and half not so much. Nobody's Fault But Mine is my second favorite Zeppelin song. Run For Your Life, Achilles Last Stand and Tea for One are also good. Royal Orleans, another stinker in my opinion. Candy Store Rock and Hots on for Nowhere are pretty forgettable.
    8. Led Zeppelin III: I absolutely love Immigrant song. The rest I tune out.
    9. Coda: Not a true Led Zeppelin album but I love the idea of having an album of unreleased tracks. The 3-disc edition is even better.
