    My top 10 would be
    1. In Rock
    2. Fireball
    3. Machine Head
    4. Burn
    5. Purpendicular
    6. Deep Purple (self titled)
    7. Now What?
    8. Perfect Strangers
    9. Stormbringer
    10. Abandon
I didn't include any live albums or bootlegs because that's its own list. On extended songs I couldn't disagree more, I love extended songs and improvisational jams.
For me songs performed live the same as the studio version are sterile, boring, and lack passion and creativity.
My favorite Deep Purple live performances are almost all from '69-'71 when they were at their most extended and improvisational...

Turning to Crime should have been covers of Mark I, III and IV songs with a couple outside tracks like Oh Well and Lucifer. Mandrake Root, Hey Joe, Kentucky Woman, Wring That Neck, Why Didn’t Rosemary, Bird Has Flown, Sail Away, What’s Going On Here, Mistreated, The Gypsy, Love Child are songs an older Gillan could handle well with Ezrin’s production. This would allow for Purple to expand their set list some what.

You would never ever get Ian Gillan to sing DP Mk3 songs even if he could handle them.

As always, I post mine before I watch the show, so I am not influenced by anything mentioned by these two great contributors.
I enjoy the Morse era...but no way can I put any of them over an album with Blackmore on it!!!
    10. Concerto for Group and Orchestra - Just love this masterpiece! A wonderful blend of classical and hard rock.
    9. Battle Rages On - Hugely under appreciated. The live performance "Come Hell or High Water" is on fire..even with Ritchie being a complete asshole!!
    8. Who Do We Think We Are - another hugely overlooked album. Some great heavy riffs and Ian Gillan is awesome.
    7. Made in Europe - THE live version of "Burn" and "You Fool No One" - Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice are ignited like the sun!! Great stuff!!
    6. Machine Head - Just a classic. The production is just a touch too dry for me..but the playing is brilliant. So many vintage tracks on one album.
    5. Fireball - Title track IS the template for future speed metal..side two is very heavy and amazing!
    4. Live in London - Another monster performance of the Mark II lineup. Brilliant recording and oh my goodness, the playing is a masterclass!!
    3. Burn - Most bands would have folded with the loss of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover. Not Deep Purple..this is a powerhouse album that really proved that Ritchie, Jon and Ian could change and still be outstanding!
    2. In Rock - THE most important and breathtaking hard rock album. A pure 10/10 masterpiece!!
    1. Made in Japan - My favorite rock album of all-time! Live OR Studio. The fact there isn't one overdub is insane!!! The power, the energy, the creativity, and the sound!!! Martin Birch ...THE master engineer!!!! It's the live experience of extended solos that made Deep Purple THE most dangerous and powerful live band of their era. No one could improvise and play with such confidence and mastery of their instruments!

First of all: Two of my favorite people on Music CZcams. Great.
Purple is one of the first Bands I've ever listened to. I had a compilation called "The Deepest Purple". However, I never really got deep into them. I have another compilation, called "The Gold Collection" or something like this. Other than that I only have Mark-2-Studio Albums ("In Rock", "Fireball", "Machine Head" and "Perfect Strangers") and some Live Albums. Mostly from the Mark-2-Line-up as well. "Come Hell or High Water" was my first and I really like it. Recently I got a box that contains the full concerts from Stuttgart and Birmingham. "Made in Japan" of course and a couple of Legacy Releases ("Live in Copenhagen 1972", "Live in Stockholm 1970" & "Live in Long Beach 1971"). Among those I have two from other Line-Ups ("Paris 1975" and "Long Beach 1976"). Paris is with Blackmore, Long Beach with Tommy Bolin. I'm not really a fan of Bolin doing Blackmore's stuff. Same for Coverdale doing Gillan-Songs. Glenn Hughes' voice I generally don't like. I have considered to at least give "Stormbringer" and "Burn" a try, but as of now I haven't done so. I like Whitesnake, so I should at least get something out of Coverdale's songs, I guess.
Great Show. Love both your insights.

Very pleased to have discovered your channel Phil, I look forward to delving deeper.
I'm not especially au fait with the Morse era as I am somewhat recent to Purple (three to four years now perhaps) and a younger guy. That said, a top five might look like this if pressed.
    1) Come Taste the Band (Bolin brings the energy and Coverdale truly spreads his wings while Hughes is infrequent yet spellbinding)
    2) Live in London (Blackmore is incendiary, Paice is an octopus, and the vocal duo perform like they have something to prove)
    3) In Rock (The hardest one to talk about since it's so monumentally important)
    4) Fireball (Variety in abundance as if to show that their were more tools in the box than one might think)
    5) Purpendicular (Morse fits like a glove, Gillan is wonderfully expressive, and the rest of the band play like they are truly enjoying themselves)

Could not agree with Martin's high ranking of Abandon , and Perfect Strangers has 3 or4 good songs , but doesn't hold up as as a " great " album . Kudos to Martin for mentioning " Look At Yourself " by Uriah Heep . That song would have been a perfect fit on In Rock ! Criticism - not enough love for Now What ! Could be top 5 ! Hi Phil. Great work at a very hard job! I envy my sister, who has 5 immovable fave Deep Purple albums - Come Taste the Band, Burn, Purpendicular, Stormbringer and Whoosh! Any Top 10 for me would change weekly, and would always include at least one Mk.1 album. Battle Rages On would usually feature too. The closest thing to In Rock for me is Mott the Hoople's Brain Capers, as you said once also a big indicator of Punk.
Some of the albums you two cited have fave tracks for me: Strangeways, Jack Ruby, Place in Line, Maybe I'm a Leo, No No No, etc.
I laughed when Martin said he doesn't like jams or long numbers on Made in Japan or Song Remains the Same. Those are a major part of why I love Purple and Zeppelin! The longest recorded Wring That Neck is on the bootleg from Croydon Fairfield Halls in late 1970 - 40mins. It never gets boring or too tangential, unless you just don't enjoy that kind of freeforming.
By the way, Thin Lizzy, who recorded the Funky Junction Play a Tribute to Deep Purple LP, included "Woffle", the noisefest which opens Speed King! That album got me into Purple back in '74/'75 - 50p from local Woolworth's.🙂
    Do you collect bootlegs too?

Martin is a phenomenon in his own right, he writes a books about a group that he actually doesn't like. He likes the albums from the late period the most, and not the albums from the beginning of the group's career, which are real masterpieces and among the most important albums of rock history of all time. Who doesn't consider those albums the best in the whole in the group's catalog, he actually doesn't like Deep Purple. • @ninoorjon
    @ninoorjon Před rokem +1

Yes, this is an amazing band, and if we meet more or less similar opinions about other bands, then in this case everything always looks so radical that complete coincidences of albums or their placement in close places are rare. Although these lists can be understood, a person really loves and appreciates Deep Purple or is looking for something to like in him, as, for example, in the case of Phil, who chose only In Rock from classic albums and diluted his list quite abundantly with live albums. Live albums are really a separate issue, and yes, I love bootlegs and live albums, but I prefer live performances that accompany the video sequence - this gives me the feeling that I am present at a concert that I missed due to various objective reasons, but the songs which for me are more ideal than on a studio album, can be listed on the fingers of one hand. Yes, energy is added at concerts, details that were not in the original and it's cool when you're among the audience, it's also good when you've listened to the original a million times and you want variety, but live can't be the first choice when the band is really loved and they have 22 studio albums even if they are the best live band in the world. I also think that just one instrument, no matter how brilliant it is in the mix, can't hold my attention for long unless the others are top notch, so it always confuses me when mediocre live tracks are elevated just because it has an ingenious guitar passage or an unforgettable drum beat, unless of course I'm just a fan of guitar or drums, and other instruments and vocals are secondary. I can not dispute someone else's opinion, I just express my thoughts.

I think he got that confused with Black Night, which was released in late summer but became a #2 hit in October '70.
