He was my hero at Broward Junior College in 1966. I had just gotten out of the Navy. We spent hours in his office, laughing and enjoying our conversations. He was 31; I was 21. God bless you, Harry!

had him Eng 101 first quarter freshman and Creative Writing final quarter Senior. he opened my eyes to language for the first time and inspired me to write my own stories. A Childhood is a masterpiece.

Thank you so much for bringing Harry back for a couple of hours. I'm nearly finished reading all of his novels, and could easily have been one of his characters, but never had the opportunity to meet him while he was still here. I share a kinship with his philosophy that self-competition is the hardest. I never needed to shave my head to be an outsider...my body did that for me. Rest in peace, Harry.

It's hard to believe that Harry Crews' books are not in print anymore. When I was a student in the early 80s my friends and I used to scrounge for his books and pass them from hand to hand. I got to meet him and shake his hand once and thank him for his work. That made me happy.

@@almaginnes7385 his books are something else man. Just got done with "Getting Naked with Harry Crews" book of interviews. So heavy. I own and have read all his books except for Karate is a Thing of the Spirit... and This Thing Dont Lead to Heaven. And the last one All American Family actually. I live in Tallahassee, Fl and my dad used to own a used book store so I really lucked out. His books are rare, the little paperback of The Gospel Singer I have goes for 150 bucks lol. When you read Harry Crews you read the truth.

If I had the money I would start a press to bring him and a bunch of other neglected writers back into print.

I was sitting with Harry Crews in his office at his Broward JC office when a box of books of his first novel was delivered. He signed and dated the very first book for me. We were pals. I think the loss of his little boy destroyed him.
