I remember the first time I heard this song was in the Fall of 1978. I was a teenage boy driving my Mother down the interstate; she listened to this song playing on the radio and cried profusely, yet asked me not to change the station. My Father had just passed five months prior, and this song touched her heart like no other. I still tear up 43 years later when I think about that moment. It's a forever favorite of mine for many reasons. RIP, Mom and Dad. :(
I’m 54 and just lost my father. Back in the day I was always drug along w/my parents to dances at the VFW Hall. The bands always played this song …which I’ve always loved…… but I ALWAYS danced w/my dad to this, so now here I sit playing every MH version and remembering my dad. I miss him 😢 R.I.P. DAD. I LOVE YOU.
So sorry for your, and your Mother's loss (any siblings?), I lost my Daddy (I over 65, and YES, U still call my father "Daddy". He was Daddy to me then, and will ALWAYS be.) in1996, and I miss him so much. MA m, try to do what I do. remember the GOOD times, You wou wouldn't miss your father so much IF there WASN'T GOOD TIMES. . Rember the GOOD times, and ☺ ☺ smile. Claudia H.
Me too man. I’m 20 years old and sometimes when I get hammered and I’m not drinking with anyone I’ll go on CZcams and demolish old country live videos. It’s so strange hearing this emotion being put into a song compared to the shit my peers and modern people listen to.
Merle Haggard is the best country artist that has ever lived. I still listen to his music everyday. Kind of gets me moving in the a.m. I miss him...saw him again in Jan. 2015. My sweet husband Jim took me to see him one more time. It was standing room only. Great show...
It was early seventies I would sing and play it while in the marines I sing it 2 my wife 1973 it was our favorite song 🎵 🎶 😌 💕 she is gone now to heaven to be with Jesus we were married almost 48 years
I'm not much into Country music. But a cowboy I went through school with finally got the nerve to ask me out. He took me to this Country Western bar with live music. Because I didn't know to how to waltz or swing, he just held me in his arms and slow danced. And kissed me. Sadly, he died at 38. This song always brings him to mind.
It took him awhile, but Merle finally got his wings, and flew back (to his heavenly) home.! R.I.P Merle.I know IF I put ME others will join me, and say why they think Merle finnaly got just what he desered? He had a hard life, but combined it with super talent. I hate it that he has left us here, but at least he got his "Break". God seen to that .
My German Shepherd loves the Hag! My late husband use to have a country band, and sang this song, as well as some of Merle's other tunes. When my dog gets anxious, all I have to do is go to CZcams and find Merle..He "calms the savage beast'!
One of my 7 cockatoos sings along to this song. I played it so many times when I created my Silver Wings routine with the Silver ISIS wings Sun Bear just loves this song
Hag!This was the first song that came to mind when I heard he passed. I was blessed to see him when I was 20 in 82! Saw many concerts of various venues back then, but his is INCOMPARABLE ! True timeless legend! RIP forever in my heart!
I love the Hag! And this Saturday his birthday & anniversary of his passing I have a cockatoo who loves airplanes & Silver Wings is my fav song I actually bought a pair of exotic ISIS wings and choreographed a routine about this song! I have performed this number at a country dance hall. If it doesn’t snow Saturday I would love to perform this number in his honor
This was one of the songs we laid grandpa Larry to rest with. Truly a beautiful song and will always be held with the highest regard within the family. Thank you Mr. Haggard
Ken Burns just made a documentary about Country music. Several interviews from Merle are in PBS documentary. It started on PBS on Sept 8th 2019. It is sixteen hours about country music origins and till the year 2000. Awesome. Took Ken Burns eight years to make...he feels awful that Merle died before he could see the final documentary.
Silver wings shining in the sunlight Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight They're taking you away And leaving me lonely Silver wings slowly fading out of sight Don't leave me, I cried Don't take that airplane ride But you locked me out of your mind And left me standing here behind Silver wings shining in the sunlight Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight They're taking you away And leaving me lonely Silver wings slowly fading out of sight ***************** Silver wings shining in the sunlight Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight They're taking you away And leaving me lonely Silver wings slowly fading out of sight Slowly fading out of sight.....
Beautiful, love 💘 this song, what a talent, he got even better with age, his voice one of a kind, happy his sons are caring on. Ben sounds a lot like him. RIP.🙏 We 💘 you.
Every time I listen to this song, it reminds me of all the young men of my generation who reported for duty when they got their draft card. They did not volunteer, and more importantly they did not run. They served our great nation at a time when they were not loved by her. This song also reminds me of all of us who volunteered for service. Thousands of whom were sent to Vietnam, while many thousands of others like myself were not. This song touched all of our hearts in one way or another, and still does today as we shall never forget those who never returned home. It is also an appropriate song for all those who served in OIF and OEF.
I agree this is awesome. Love it soooo much I bought a pair of Silver ISIS using my wings and did a dance routine with the wings telling the story he sings about.
For Delinda’s Mom! Rest In Peace beloved Mother of My friend! You have a daughter that misses you and will love you for eternity! You are with Our Lord now, your suffering is done!❤️🙏🏻🕊🌸🌺💐
The man, the legend. My son now 32 learned this song when he was 5.... still sings it. Merle you are missed and will never be replaced !! I just turned 65 this year play this song often… was just about to shed a tear, but Merle said “no, you’ll need those for another day”… RIP MR. HAGGARD
I choreographed a special dance routine to this song using huge Silver ISIS wings (like belly dancers use). Everyone loves the routine as Meryl sings the story I use the wings to give a visual of the words. Thank you Meryl for this special song that I love
Merle was the best. Love all his songs I have in my music library. This brings back memories of the time times my husband had to go remote during his military years. Thanks for sharing. 🎶❤️

No matter what these young kids say. You can never bet class when it comes to the old country music AMEN. What do you think
I couldn't agree more. The stuff they call Country Music today sucks. I'll take the old-school music every day.
The longer I live, the more I LOVE the 70's
This song though he recorded in the 60s
He had a beautiful voice 💚🇮🇪❤️
Hello there Mairead nice meeting you here
This is my absolute favorite version performed by the Hag...
He’s #1 no doubt about that!!! 💙
I remember this in 1970, got married at 16, husband was drafted, he left on a plane for basic Training! Went to Vietnam! Came home a different person!
