  • Reviewing my wife's NC Miata that we have owned for just over 4 years.
Great handling little car that is easy to work on and reliable. I talk about trunk space, interior space, exterior looks, and take it for a spin.
    Hope you enjoy!

I own a 2007 Miata touring. It's not a 911, a NSX, or a 360 Modena, and doesn't pretend to be; but at one tenth the price, you will be hard pressed to get a better car, or more joy, for the $. Right now the NC is just a used car; and the prices reflect that. Get one now, while you can, maintain it, cover or garage it. Someday in the future people will realize what jewels these cars are and the price will reflect that. In the meantime ENJOY.

Regarding the interior trunk switch, it is a lock out switch. It allows the trunk to be completely locked out from remote access, which allows you to leave the top down an keep valuables inside the trunk securely locked. It is actually very beneficial for the soft top, given the ability of a thief to quickly slit the top and have access to the inside of the car. The trunk lock-out allows the integrity of the trunk to remain protected. Consider it turning the trunk into a secure lock box.
Regarding the passenger side, two things. The hump you refer to provides access for the catalytic convertor underneath the car. The hump is even worse on the ND. And on right hand drive models, the hump remains for the driver on the right side. The passenger leg room can be dramatically improved on the NC very easily. Pull back the top of the carpet under the glove box. Underneath of there you will find a large plastic spacer. Remove the spacer and you instantly gain about 3 inches of usable leg room. The spacer is not functional in any way. On the ND, that spacer location now houses the subwoofer, but in the NC, that spacer is useless.

😊I'm driving my 4th Miata, a 2016 ND Club. I've put 100,000 miles on it in 2 years, and drove my earlier cars just the same. Probably like you, I still gobble up any info regarding these cars wherever I can (and sometimes rewatch, lol). I love the MX5. All years are great choices, but sport suspensions (or aftermarket) and LSD will greatly enhance your experience. I was tempted to get something quicker, but the choices were all much heavier, poor mileage, didn't handle as well, etc.. I appreciate the lightness and nimble handling and the ability to easily control oversteer. Very cool to have a Corvette owner appreciate the MX5.

What a fair and sensible review. I have glossed over many American reviews as a Brit because sometimes things just don't translate as your roads are different, the other cars are different, running costs can be different. But all seems so fair. Especially as it seems we are about the same size so it helps identify how I look in the car.

  • @GMak81

The sense of speed you get in this car is crazy, feels like you're going much faster than you are. Sometimes I'd like a little more power, and more sense of theatre (stock muffler/backbox is WAY too sound deadening) - but overall, on the mega twisty British backroads, this car is a driver's dream, so much fun, so engaging and just wants to be driven.

    • @maintainersgarage

@@pantloaded the first time I drove an NC the boost in power between it and the previous versions was the second thing I noticed. 1st off - thanks for mentioning the trunk button - dang I've been living with that for over a year! Yours was a good honest accurate review.
I have the same '08 Grand Touring stormy mica blue PRHT that I bought in 02/16 - what a looker she is - and a blast to drive. The few mods I've done was to get rid of the center cup holder and replace it with Moss Miata "insert/center console", it's a bit pricey but it fixed the silly latch that didn't work and gave me plenty of useful space. I also installed a GTA Car Kit - iPod/iPhone/Aux that plugs right into the stereo and makes it look like it has an external CD stack. I keep my old trusty iPod with 8K songs on shuffle. You can also plug in anything with a 3.5mm plug. The cables ran right to the new center console and it works beautifully. They also make a bluetooth version if that's what you need.
I also changed out the trunk and dome bulbs with LED's to get rid of the grungy yellowish lights. That's it, everything else is stock and I plan on keeping it that way!

My wife would never drive one, but she will venture out in a Miata. I drove an ND, but the steering is electric, which I hated the numbness of--giant step backwards! Great Review! I have an 07 Touring with 73K on the clock. I purchased her about 5 years ago with 58K, and she looks identical to yours except she is burgundy with a black canvas top. I also own a 04 Lexus SC430 and a 03 Tacoma which I bought new. Like you, I can't say enough good things about the Miata. Everywhere I go with this car I get compliments! And I will also say that everytime I park her and walk away, I look back at her. The Miata is a beautiful car. I was surprised that you didn't have a complaint regarding the sun-visors because they're horrible in this car and many Miatas have problems with them not staying "up." Each of these cheap plastic visors will run over a hundred dollars, so I've learned that 2-sided tape can be my friend. I haven't driven my Miata very much over the last year mainly due to Corona-virus where I've been working from home. In fact, I've only driven her about 200 miles in the last year. Anyway, I'm retiring this year, and I've decided to sell the Miata because I want a little less of a footprint. Like yours, mine is also in perfect condition and exceptionally well maintained. New tires, battery, Robbins new top, etc. I maintain my cars very well. Dealers have offered me $6000.00 for her, but I'm not taking it. For such little money, I'll continue to drive her till the wheels fall off. Anyway, I didn't mean to go on for so long, but I'm glad you and your wife are enjoying your Miata! And by the way, I hate that button in the trunk, too!

@@maintainersgarage I sold my Miata yesterday. It’s so really odd that your video showed up again this morning on my CZcams homepage. I’m so sorry, but I forgot about your video and posting on it previously. So, I will share a little bit of my experience selling my Miata - if that’s okay with you. I listed my Miata on Autotrader (Autotrader 2007 Miata For Sale) (O.C. Ca. AutoTrader) two days ago on Thursday afternoon for 12k. I had multiple offers and sold it for 14k in less than 48 hours - it sold yesterday, Saturday. Each of the offers came from people who had previously owned a Miata. And since yesterday, my stomach has been in an uproar because I’m now seriously wondering if I should’ve sold it. The buyer, a very nice older gentleman who’s a Corvette owner, gave me a deposit check and will pick up the car on Tuesday when the banks open after the Labor Day holiday. Emotionally, I thought it would be a piece of cake to let this car go. I wasn’t even thinking in those terms of it being NOT easy. For crying out loud - it’s ONLY a car! Right? Yet, the emotions I have connected with this little roadster have surprised me. In December, I’m retiring to my home in Palm Springs, and I only have a two-car garage. I’m keeping my Lexus and Tacoma. Anyway, this has been one of the toughest decisions I’ve had in a very long time. Maybe, I need to tear up the deposit check - unbelievable emotions tied to that little car, huh? Crazy! Well, I’m sorry for the long post here - maybe this writing is meant more for me than for you. Take care and continue good luck with your Miata.

I have a 2007 NC MX5 hardtop, and I have absolutely no need for it. I have a company Mitsubishi 4x4 truck for work, which comes with free and unlimited private usage & fuel. But as good as that is, it isn't in any way fun to drive. So I have the MX5, and it's just a little pure distillation of joy in automotive form. I haven't enjoyed driving a car so much since my old V6 Alfa Romeo GTV. I live in Western Australia, so a similar climate to southern California. When I'm out bombing round country roads, cruising to wineries, or just taking sunset drive along the coast, the MX5 always ALWAYS makes me happier than I was when I got in it.

as an nc owner having come from a civic, i am going to hurt some feelings. the car is definitely faster than my civic was. i will say that working on this thing is more of a pain than the civic was and frankly i had a more enjoyable experience in my civic from a comfort standpoint. people praise the miata for its handling, i will say coming from my civic to the miata, it feels the same. i dont know what it is about it but it doesnt give me any more confidence in cornering than the amount i had with my civic. now i can come out of the corner a lot faster than with my civic but as far as the cornering itself, same. i really dont know if it is this generation or if it is the miata as a whole. this is my first one i have owned and it the only one i have driven so who knows. maybe the nc has that reputation because it is a lot like my civic. i really dont know. good to see the opinion of someone who has driven the other models though. gives me a bit of insight

Thanks. And how long have you had your miata? The reason i ask is you may have more comfort pushing your old Civic harder than your new miata. My vette's will snap over steer if given a bit of to much throttle mid corner. The miata can't even at almost WOT. The miata s driver seat is almost perfect at telling you what the rear end is doing. Your civic may have as well, but many cars don't. The feedback in the steering wheel is great, as well as your civic might have been, but again many cars are not. In my opinion, that is what makes the miata so great and confidence inspiring. But, i dig a lot of civic SI's!!
