- David Bowie • Station To Station • Live 1978
•
This video was created from footage shot in Tokyo in December 1978, synced to the audio of Station To Station, from the 2005 remaster of the 1978 live album “Stage”.
•
*Updating these notes on the 29th of March 2020 - the date in 1978 that David Bowie commenced his Isolar II 1978 World Tour, at the San Diego Sports Arena*
In addition, since originally creating and posting this video here in September 2016, it has recently become the first one on my channel to hit one million views.
So, thanks a million for watching!
•
David Bowie's Isolar II 1978 World Tour, also known as The Low / “Heroes” World Tour or The Stage Tour, ran through North America, Europe and Australia and New Zealand before reaching it's conclusion at the NHK Hall in Tokyo, on the 12th of December, 1978. Eighty dates were played, with a total attendance of almost 1.2 million people.
•
"Stage" was recorded live at the Philadelphia, Boston and Providence shows, in Spring ’78.
Tony Visconti has confirmed that the version of Station To Station on Stage, is a hybrid of two performances from those shows. Listening to an audience recording of Station To Station, from the Philadelphia show on the 28th of April, the Belew guitar squeals in the intro sound remarkably similar to the version we hear on "Stage'.
“From a mammoth synth train reproduction to the young Adrian Belew staking his claim as the song’s definitive guitarist to a Bowie vocal that’s all sinew, it’s arguably the song’s finest performance. The band uses the key change as a signal to rocket off: there’s an intense communal joy to this music, and even Bowie gets carried away by it." From the Pushing Ahead of the Dame "Station To Station" essay @ bowiesongs.wordpress.com/…/12...
The video footage used here, is from the final night of the 1978 tour, in Tokyo on the 12th of December. It is the only known complete footage of Station to Station from the ’78 tour. However, whilst the quality of the sound recording is quite good, the sound mix and moreover the performance is just not great. Bowie’s vocal is not one of his best, and Adrian Belew’s wild guitar explorations veer perhaps a bit too wildly off course. Whereas Station to Station from "Stage" has been one of my favourite Bowie moments since I first heard the album, when I was around 12 years old. I would sit in my bedroom, at my parents house, with the volume up as high as I was allowed, with my disco lights flashing away wildly to the crazy intro of synthesized train noises, and George Murray’s and Dennis Davies thrilling deep bass and drums buildup.
So anyway, a video was required I decided. And despite the fact that every video I make seems to take an eternity in maddening minuscule details, I imagined, “Ah! This will be a nice quickie”. After all, how difficult can it be to match two live versions of the same song, from the same tour? A huge problem was that the version of Station to Station on "Stage" has been heavily edited, shaving off several minutes from the original. Whole sections are gone, parts of verses, the guitar break much reduced, the intro heavily edited down etc. What’s more, the Tokyo version is very much longer - in excess of 13 minutes long. So that gave me a lot of continuity problems. And as always, Mr. David Bowie changes the vocal emphasis throughout, and even changes / omits / adds lyrics, all creating huge difficulties. And lastly, the other big hassle was matching the improvised guitar squealings by that other wild card in the '78 tour pack, Mr. Adrian Belew!
Anyway, it did eventually come together in a fairly satisfactory way, I think.
Thanks for watching, hope you dig it!

The Station to Station album was a masterpiece from beginning to end.
It's my absolute favorite album

Codella Guitars indeed!!

In my opinion the best Bowie song. It just is.

To all the young people discovering rock-'n'-roll for the first time, THIS is a vocalist; a true artist.
If only I had been born earlier. I'm 14 and it sucks knowing - and seeing - that there aren't as many good artists these days. They just don't use as much emotion. There are few genuine artists but no one can ever replace Bowie, or any old artist in my opinion.
He was one of the few that sounded better live than on the record. There will never be another one like him.
I've seen him live many times and every period was phenomenal to me. It was always an amazing experience. The last time I saw him live was The Reality Tour and I'll never forget that I had to cover my ears a few times when a song ended because the audience was so loud screaming & cheering. I'll never forget when he performed "The Loneliest Guy" it was as if the air was sucked out of the room but it was me losing my breath. His vocals were magical.
@@markm5193wow thank you so much for sharing this... I'll love and miss him forever. I am from Brazil, I saw him the only 2 times he came here, 90 and 97. It was also magical...
Bowie was and is my fav musician, but besides him I would also add Freddie Mercury as the benechmark of live perfomance. Just his live aid gig back then.. unbelievable (although not a fan of "Queen")
Another THEM. DB & MR x
I've been a fan for 50 years. Every album, every tour killed me when he died. One of the best song writers of all time.
40 yrs for me... and I couldn’t agree more!

Love You David…
This tour stopped in Chicago / Arie Crown Theater, for 2 nights in April of 1978. I went to both shows. Knowing that Bowie favors the right side of the stage, we made sure to get our seats there. Think I was in the 18th row. On the 2nd night, I was determined to get to the stage so I could give him a picture I drew of him in high school, w/ a letter I wrote on the back. During the encore, my sister and I ran up the isle and the usher didn't dare stop us. I was wearing a handmade halter, w/ Rebel Rebel in rhinestones on the front. David took notice, as I was smiling and waving and looking so fine ...and I gave him my gift. My sister snapped a pic just as he was reaching out to me, w/ the biggest smile. He then put the foil wrapped tube in his mic stand and finished the concert. I rec'd follow up phone calls at my job, on my birthday, from his asst., Corrine, thanking me, etc. on behalf of David Bowie. You can imagine how I felt when I rec'd those calls. I have to wonder where my artwork is now, somewhere in his archives I'd imagine.
Sorry for the long post, I had to share after I watched your video. Thanks Nacho.
I want to see that photo!
+Nacho Video hi Cathy, got your message. But on a cellphone I'm unbelievably to answer it. Please email me at nachomarcho@gmail.com
thats a great story once in a lifetime chance
Dear Cathy, this must have been a dream come true! I was in London a little bit after that and got to see him in Earls Court, but not so close! David Bowie was a gentleman! I can't imagine the wonderful birthday present was that for you! I am sure your gift is his archives! And he is smiling at you and all of us! Thank you for this beautiful story!
Way cool .Good on you for sharing that story. Maybe one day that piece of art will find it's way on the internet. I'll be watching for it.
Few people make life on Earth as pleasant as David Bowie did. Still does.
For my money, Station to Station was Bowie's greatest album , taken as a whole . it can and should be listened to from beginning to end. tells a continuous story and not a bad song on the disk. a true masterpiece.
I agree.
I agree, but then again every time I listen to a David Bowie album from beginning to end I say that's a favorite except for Black Tie white noise.
@@patriciahargraves4243 No, you have to listen to it again, I thought that too when it came out, then pulled it out years later and though, wow, this is like referencing back to his earlier work.
beacause ... as he has often said , it came from the confused soul instictive , much more than from rationality. STATION TO STATION IT IS his FREEST album FRESCH iRRATIONAL , SICK AND MAGIC WORK ! !. BOH ? MAYBE I 'VE A LITTLE CONFUSED... but it seems to me to be a true synthesis of man . (Excuse me, i Drunk ).
..
what story?
Carlos Alomar. Adrian Belew. That drummer! You can see the influence of the Japanese theater in Bowie's movements -total control. And the voice, so rich and resonant . Total performance. .
Best
Adrian was also in King Crimson, right?
Adrian Belew is such an underrated Axeman..Earl Slick was owning by serious Moonlight..but Belew doesnt need to prove shit to shitt...
@@BIGKEV57 yamoo varvoo
I'd still have Slick and Ronson over Belew though...
I love how David gives his audiences a proper bow at the end of a performance, always the gentleman. But then here after taking his bows he lightly skips away. It's almost child-like. Adorable!
I love that skip too :)
That little skip is adorable!
Fabulous trip fuck off, I love that song so much!
Reminds me of a live Bjork video I saw once, where she and her band mates had to run on tiptoe to get to their places on stage in time.
Of course, he's a gracious gentleman. He's a Duke!
There will never be another DAVID BOWIE
In 7.5 billion years when the sun expands and consumes this Earth, David Bowie will still be ahead of his time.
One of the greatest songs ever recorded.

I love how he uses the MIME at 4:58. It's like he doesn't JUST SING the song, but COMPLETELY INTERPETS it.
I went to the Philly show on this tour. The impact of those lights coming on when he says "it's not the side effects of the cocaine" in indescribable. Simple but extremely effective lighting on this tour.
The mighty Adrian Belew on guitar! He has played guitar on/with bands which featured Zappa, Bowie, R. Fripp in King Crimson, The Talking Heads, etc... What a musician!
There's no person in the world that makes me feel as much as David Bowie. It's insane what music can do, it's love, anger and depression and not watered down in any way.
He painted with music, oh that voice, a channel to heaven❤
Adrian Belew really unleashes this Song into the Stratosfear with his Stratocaster!!😎😎🎸🎸
Slick was no Slouch trust me...
Bowie + Belew + Station to Station = awesomeness!
The BEST song of David bowie
The drums and bass rock it so hard at the “it’s too late section”.
Man!!! He sure knew how to pick musicians!! These guys are on fire!!!
Yea, good point and he totally gives them the stage+spotlight. His bands were real bands with all members putting in 100%. The intros just his band, All his bands were A+
Denyn Davis was an INCREDIBLE drummer. He would 'beatbox' ' his drum pattern then play it exactly. perfectly. His drum kit was HUGE. Another great artist gone. Must be one awesome concert up there!❤️❤️❤️
Adrian Belew
Roger Powell was in this touring band too. He is/was and incredibly influential musician and programmer, who had some influence, on a technical level, over The Who's "Baba O'Riley".
Mitch Harrelson fuckin right
He looks like an angel here. Ethereal. Beautiful voice. Dark and mysterious.
The way he moved, WOW!!!
Drew the audience right in. ✌️😎
Well put
@@stephenhensley5631 He was always angelic and elegant in every motion. A pure joy to watch

Goddamn, what a voice! Otherworldly.
One of the greatest songs written by anyone ever
Man they're just ripping. I love how aggressive bowie's vocals are in this performance and I feel like we don't usually hear him using so much rasp and distortion in his singing. I also love how they ended with the "return of the thin white duke" refrain from the first part of the song.
Agree that this is one of Bowies best line-ups. Amazing album! Great musicians. wonderful rhythm changes. And still the rock and roll element
Do you know the full line up?
This man is actually on fire (not to mention his band)
I guess this is the best live performance of this song that I've ever seen
I agree! It is fantastic and what a bunch of musicians
I love how he uses the MIME at 4:58. It's like he doesn't JUST SING the song, but COMPLETELY INTERPETS it.
Yes, it is.
Nope not even close. Bad version by Belew.

PHILADELPHIA USA🇺🇲
Saw this in NYC 1978... amazing it was... this song is particularly a stage vehicle for the master showman... Young, gorgeous, coming out of a bad cocaine period, giving one of his best ever stage performances...
Having seen David over 30+ times, here it is 2024 and hearing his voice makes the hair on both arms stand straight up. I miss this guy.
Wonderful song, David you're ETERNAL
What a fucking hero... artist... performer... words can't say enough !!
He looks like an angel
Bowie's best line up. His best band ever.
ya know we have the Alomar Slick era ta deal with too..but Belew is a Beast...
Utterly unbelievable how this number apparently never gets old...
Still listening to it with the same excitement almost half a century on...
Truly magical...
cannot tell you how fantastically great i feel now, with tears for the loss of the main man. David Bowie
David was probably the single best songwriter who ever lived. He worked masterfully over decades in so many genres, often anticipating (or initiating?) coming trends in music, sound, and fashion. A great example is Low. What an alien sound at the time. Came out of nowhere. But it predated a processed, synthetic sound that became very popular in the 80’s.
Probably the best body of work for any pop artist. And arguably the best and greatest pop singer as well.
Well, the inspiration came from the album Discreet Music by Brian Eno, who also became his collaborator and producer. LOW it´s brilliant. One of his best albums if not THE best. But Heroes, Hunky Dory, Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps), Ziggy Stardust, and others, are all fantastic
kinda if Lennon McCartney maybe even George were 1 person
@@iponsoyenage He knew instinctively how to take any influence and break it for a wider audience
From Aladdin Sane and on.
Man, he was very handsome during this era.
He didn’t sang my favourite part the same way (“it’s not the side effects of the cOcAine”), but he and the band blew my mind with this version.
Cocaine may have something to do with it 😝
I know what you mean, but live versions tend to do that.
live versions aren’t the studio version, if you payed to see it you certainly know the song, adding a little twist makes the performance better imo
Pretty sure its "side effects of the cooking" :p
@@darreng6030 It's not.
im in tears, this is one of his greatest performances.
The time when Bowie ruled the world. An irreplacable force and certainly there'll never be another like him.
Bowie looks amazing
Super masterpiece!is a poem this,today not arrivable!Thanks Duke❤
Do you know what it means?
The way he skipped off the stage...
I LOVE THIS MAN!!!
♥♥♥
Killer band here - Adrian Belew and Utopia's Roger Powell on keyboards plus the Alomar/Davis/Murray piledriver of power plus Simon House on violin and Sean Mayes on 2nd keyboards? Crazy. I listened to that live record tons of times over the years.
The amazing guitarists Bowie used is phenomenal!
Holy Shit. My first time seeing Bowie in 78 in Los Angels. Thank You Brother. Brings Back Memories.
A masterpiece in its entirety.
1978. What a year.
Probably the best performance of one of Bowie's best songs. a treasure
IT JUST DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS
I absolutely love this era of Bowie... and this song is AMAZING. The return of the thin white duke throwing darts in lovers eyes... Miss you Bowie you were and are a constant fixture in my childhood growing up thanks to my parents.
My favorite Bowie song ever and one of my very favorite drummers of all time - the amazing Dennis Davis who died a few months after Bowie himself. What an era and what a great band on this tour. Adrain B on guitar as well, wow.
AND.....Roger Powell on synthesizer!!!!!
Few artists can claim to be one of the timelines of the annals of rock, Bowie is one of those. So many things, artists, sounds were derived from his various incarnations in the 70s. Of course having himself surrounded by so many talented players, producers and artistic visionaries didn't hurt. But in the end, it mostly began and ended with him, and what an amazing ride it was.
Great band, and David at the top of his form. Dennis Davis was a fantastic talent, and his work with George Murray was the best rhythm section Bowie ever had. Ever. Dennis Davis RIP
Real power, no other artist comes close to this in 2016.
A zillion of light years away......, Unreachable.
+elpoderdelasgalaxias Very true......
Or 2018, he’s irreplaceable
There are people who are good musically toady but no one can write a song like Bowie
Let the children boogie, Christian
This song is probably my favorite David Bowie song.
Pure genius ❤️
David Bowie has the most beautiful face that has ever been created in this world. And probably of the whole universe.
I never did any drugs in my life, but through this song i know exactly what it must feel like ...What a true musician David Bowie was able to shoot you in Orbit "only" through his songs 💕
It's not over yet
Adrian Belew. hat can one say. Brilliant guitarist !
Also Roger Wilcox on keyboards.Todd Rundgren's Utopia being his regular job.
Indeed - shame about the shirt though.
Yes I feel he doesnt get enough recognition for his playing.
Yes mindbending there's no guitarist I love more than him, only equal. His mastery with T Heads was white hot. When I saw him in 78 the locomotive was rushing through me and Adrian's guitar My God! Genius of David Bowie
I wonder have u heard Adrian's intro to Stay in Lisbon 1990. My gosh its devastating. I love how David just gave him the stage totally on that tour
What F***ing Talent this Guy Had.. Unbelievable..
Bowie...unique and brilliant
saw Bowie and the Band on this tour, Lang Park Brisbane Queensland November 1978. The old grandstands shook like they would collapse at any moment. It was the loudest thing I had ever heard (until Motorhead - Saturday, August 18, 1984 Bombay Rock - Surfers Paradise). Saw him again on One more Night at the same venue in 1983. Magic.
pure genius. what a track.
Irreplaceable! David Bowie...love his music love him...miss him.. Genius
Saw this tour live at Wembley. Magical.
When I was young I heard this song on the radio. It was interresting and also strange to hear but anyway I liked it. And now I am playing it again. Thank you David Bowie for this treasure
Merci beaucoup pour votre réponse monsieur 👍... Murielle 57 ans ❤️
I handed David a dozen of red roses at. The Boston show. Loved this tour. Miss you David. 💜
I was there too. My first intro to Le Chien Andalou too!
Gotta love the old gahden.
This is truly one of the greatest. Bowie wrote this at the peak of his coke and blackmagic craze; it's layered with so much wisdom, his getting back to Europe really is his redemption from his addiction. Credit also should go out to his primarily African American band such as Allomar whose guitar work makes this song what it is. Incredible, how close this version is to the studio recording depsite it being such a complex song.
one of Bowie's best songs...it is never to late to love : 0
The irreplaceable Dennis Davis. Maestro!
This tour was my first Bowie live experience, in Stockholm, Sweden. There's always only one first time and this was a experience of a lifetime. Bowie followed me through the years and now the empty space he left will follow me further on...
Same here, in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. The week of my 18th birthday, it changed my life. He seemed so fresh and real. I'd never been in a room where a gay man was welcome before. It's such a treasure to have this documented and shared!
Same here!
i got a bootleg, livein Stockholm 1979...is actually Goteborg 1978
Well said.
I live in fear of people like you no longer posting Bowie videos I can't get enough thanks so much love everything you do on bowie
ditto- You can't stop Nacho!
Totally agree.
I LOVE this intro on station to Station, heard in the Christiane F.movie, that we saw in 6'th grade in scool to scare us from doin drugs (did'nt work),but i have never felt so good!!,and i thakns for that!!! Because it got me into MUSIC and i thakns Bowie for the theme music in this exellent film (german), google it,watch it,and if it dont get to you, well i dont have a problem, you do! It's based on a true story and i have never forgotten ut,even if i went in the same trap as Christin,R.I.P. But,even if is a,"old" movie, the theme is still relevant today,sadly.... But maybe YOU learn from it and if so, thakns Bowie and i love to scare you straight!!! Like i've finally did😅!! I'm now,51, and i love to live every day!!!! Thakns for Reading a true story and i wish you well, stay strong,!!!!! ED.
Don't live in fear at all!
I'm thinking these videos will keep going up, because Bowie once said on a talk show in the 2000s that even he never bought CDs anymore. I think to keep his spirit alive, all this stuff needs to stay up as much as possible. Somehow, I think he would have wanted it that way, especially knowing that his family would be financially fine, regardless.
I miss the Thin White Duke.
The Thin White Duke, love it!
Just when I thought I'd found all the best bowie songs already, I stumble across this work of beauty. I am going to listen to the rest of this album immediately
In my opinion this is the best version of this song either studio or live, from 5:12 to 8:15 it is pure ecstasy !!! Put on good headphones and you'll know why, or better yet listen to that part from the original cd !
Completely agree.
A few Jethro tull like chords and then the thin white funkateer takes off, magic...
Alexander...ANOTHER unforgettable classic by Bowie. One moves from the strident purpose of 'Station to Station' to the totally engulfing romance of 'Wild is the Wind'. Choose? How can one?!? Both infiltrate, at some points, however far apart, aspects of our lives...And for that we sigh - or are grateful. Just about both, perchance...Perchance to dream?
This is the best version of this song....nearly wore the Double LP out...🤟
The mans greatest song in my humble opinion & this live take is just killer.....
How very lucky was I to have seen this show in 1978 when he came to Auckland, New Zealand. It will forever be the very best. 70,000 people bathing in the glory of Bowie at his best with a fabulous band. The minor disappointment that Eno didn't tag along was soon forgotten. This song live, swirling around the speakers placed around the stadium, was truly awesome even though it's not even in my top ten Bowie songs. Thankyou David and Thankyou Nacho!
A special show, great band.
Masterpiece!!! And Adrian Belew is the cherry on top
So beautiful I can't stand it.

Grew-up in the 70's with BOWIE. My best friends father bought tickets to the STATION TO STATION tour and we saw him live at the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield Mass. on March 21st, 1976 ( I was about to turn 15). Needless to say, this show changed my life (I was never the same afterward). We still, to this very day, talk about that concert in vivid detail ... it was a total and complete BRAIN-BENDER ! ! Love on ya, BOWIE
What an absolutely fabulous band that was
Bowie- perfect. Amazing & physically at his best, his voice 100%. Damn.
I was there !!!! I was 16. I always remember that this was one of the best concerts. I had such a good time! No drugs. High on music.
One of a kind unique talent and possibly the best male vocalist ever. My all time FAVE! 💞
pure expression and perfect performance.......this man was not able to do a single unappealing gesture.......as angie.b quoted once...and this is so right!!!!
Growing up in Germany, I'll always associate this album with "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" Amazing song!
Und als Idol habe ich ihn wie Christiane F. verehrt.
I remember seeing him in Glasgow in 1978 you knew you were in the presence of Greatness I was 18 years old now mid 60s…peace to the World from Scotland.
Utter class how the song moves around. The genius of David.
